Mark B  (19 June 2007)        10/10

On our holiday in june 07 we had been told how good sugar reef was so we decided to go along and see for ourselves what the restaurant / bar was like.

its a family run business with denis who fronts the bar and restaurant and his mother angela who prepares and cooks the food, the food is superb everything is freshly prepared and freshly cooked and you can taste the freshness when you take your first bite, again denis does what he does best makes absolutely fantastic cocktails but there again he is ranked 8th in the world so he knows what he is doing, the cocktails are works of art.

we had a fantastic time at sugar reef we will be back again next year so denis and angela take care

see you soon

What can i say????? well, this is one of if not THE best restaurant in Kalamaki. Dennis the owner was very friendly and always made us feel very welcome! when we go back in september we will definately be going there again!!!! note to everyone - try the cokctails and definately the nachos!!!!!!!!!

Adam H  (01 July 2006)

This is easily the best restaurant / bar in Kalamaki, we visited most of them in our 2 weeks there and came back again and again. Why? Because everything was home cooked for us there and then, Angela`s cooking is as good as my Ma`s and the menu changed daily, so refreshing compaired with the microwave readymeal culture of the other restaurants, it was really good to be able to enjoy traditional Greek dishes if we fancied them listening to greek music or to resort to the traditional English dishes which were just as well prepared.
As if that was not good enough the bar was great , Dennis the bar man  has a number of World Cocktail Championships under his belt and though we were a bit dubious at first he came up trumps time and time again with amazing cocktails as good as I have tried anywhere on my travels before .
We did try a number of other places just for a bit of variety but they were all more pricey for bland or overcooked food and rubbish drinks [one place did not put any tequila in a Margarita as they thought it was non-alcoholic!].
The service was friendly and efficient , the staff helped us with any info we needed about how to get about or where to go and see things "off the map" on the island and it really made our stay easy and comfortable, we could not recommend it enough.

Vicqui T  (01 June 2006)

Just come back from Kalamaki Sun 28th May 2006, We have spent most days at some point in Sugar reef, Breakfast fabulous,( especially Angelas eggs). Lunches just as good and the evening meals are the best around. All freshly cooked, have been to most of the other restaurants over the last 8 years we have been to Kalamaki and we have yet to find one that beats Sugar reef. Definately worth a visit for food and atmosphere. Dennis!s cocktails are a must as he uses proper spirits not cheap alternatives as most of the other bars do!!! and ars the best i have tasted.

Katerina   (03 May 2006)

I lived on Zakynthos for three years and ate at Sugar Reef every day! Myself and Nikki and all of the reps over the years spent some great times with Dennis and Angela, Yannis and Lilly. We won't be back this year to work but it will be our first port of call when we come over on holiday. I miss my chicken and avocado pasta, the scampi and the reef burger! But most of all both Nikki and I will miss you all and can't wait to see you. Have a great season. This is the best restaurant in Kalamaki.

Lots of Love Katerina xxx

5th visit to Kalamaki, what can I say, had a fantastic time yet again, great to see old friends at the Sugar Reef,  Food is great, surroundings are calm and peaceful (just what you need after an earthquake!!!), staff are brilliant.  Love to Dennis, Angela, Jimmy, Yannis & Lily who looked after us superbly again!.  Can't wait to come out next year.Smile

Large V  (28 October 2005)

We went back to Zakynthos again this year, the last week in August and first in September. This time we stayed in Argassi, where there is plenty to do, but we had to go back and visit Kalamaki, which I think is the best place in Zakynthos - it's like a magnet, but the I think that the biggest attraction has to be the Sugar Reef restaurant, with Dennis and his very friendly family and staff. We actually went there most of the time we were out whether it was after the beach or for our night out. I think that it serves the best food and service on the island at very reasonable prices and the cocktails - they are just to die for!!! You have the usual cocktails that you can get everywhere you go - but also, cocktails you have never heard of before, which they have made up themselves and are of course a trade secret - including an "Easy J". Dennis told me that he called it after one of his customers who asked him to make up something to his taste - and boy that guy (the one it's named after) must have some taste!!! When we arrived Dennis and co. made us feel so welcome again (like we were old friends), and this applies to everyone who enters the Sugar Reef whether you have been there before or not.

If you are thinking of going to Kalamaki in the future, I would highly recommend this place to go to, whether it's for food, drinks or just a bit of craic.

Anyway Dennis, thanks for all the hospitality and fun we had while we were there and hope to see you early next year. Have a great Christmas and new year.

Large V  (27 October 2005)

Steven L  (05 September 2005)

We have just returned from our 14th visit to the Island and as usual spent every night at Sugar Reef. The restaurant just keeps getting better every year. Dennis, Angela, Jimmy, John and Lilly make you feel welcome from the moment you step in the door. Angela and her team are amazing cooks who will cater for everyone's needs and Dennis is fantastic at cocktail making. Met a few really nice families here. Would reccomend the place to everyone - definately scores 10/10... but remember to watch out for the pumpkins (all 13 of them!).

Anne S  (18 August 2005)

Had a great time back in Zante yet again. Spent alot of time at the Sugar Reef and of course the food was as usual excellent. Sampled several of the cocktails and all were brill. Just tell Dennis what you like and he will make it for you, you dont even have to look at the menu, how easy is that. Great to see you all guys. Will be back next year for another fantastic holiday or 2!

Chris C  (03 August 2005)

bet a lot of you didn`t know but Dennis is one of the top cocktail artists in the WORLD competitions, why waste time and money going to Laganas when you have a far better time here with the real McCoy!

SUGAR REEF - Try it you will not be disappointed - either for a meal or just for drinks this place is superb. We dined here most nights, a varied menu from local dishes to pasta/pizza and the daily specials board - bascially anything you like and fresh. Angela is a great cook. Denis the owner and his staff are just great and so helpful.  Denis, Angela, Jimmy & Janis we miss you all and you can be sure we'll be back next season .....3 weeks of your fine hospitality was not enough.

Anne S  (10 June 2005)

Just had a fantastic week in Zante and spent every evening at the Reef. Everything about the place is brilliant. The rating on this place should be 20/10. Even the fussy eater in my party was very happy with the food, and that in itself takes some beating. The homemade pizzas are the best, forget Dominos and Pizza Hut. Dennis and his team always go out of their way to make your stay the most enjoyable. Keep up the good work guys and may see you all later in the year. Will let you know though as you may need to order more cocktail ingredients and more wine!!

Eddie O  (09 June 2005)

This actually is my favourite bar in the whole world and ive been to a lot of bars trust me :)

This is the third year in a row ive been back here (it almost feels like my local now). A trip to Zante is not complete without a meal at the reef and one of Dennis' magic cocktails. I know every one goes on about the food and the cocktails but they definitly have to be tried. Of all the meals and cocktails ive had I have loved everyone of them. Dennis and his family (including Yanni) are fantastic company and give the place a very friendly feel.

Thanks for the good times as usual Dennis

Cant wait till I go back

Alex C  (31 May 2005)

What can I say....  This is the second year I've been here, and it never ceases to amaze me...I won't go on about the cocktails, as I'm sure by everyone else's reviews I don't need to say how nice they are, but this time, we had the pleasure of eating here!  Quality food guys especially the Sunday Roast! (By the way, you won't have a nicer pint of Fosters anywhere in the world, and I don't say that lightly).

Dennis, you're a top bloke, and there's no doubt we'll be back, if not by the end of the season, then by next summer!

Take it easy!

Large V  (09 May 2005)

Hi Andrew, Dennis's email address.......... sugarreefshakers@yahoo.co.uk

Andrew B  (30 April 2005)

looking to get in touch with Dennis. We had a great time eating and drinking with Dennis Last year 2004.  The food and Coctails were the best.  Looking to go back this year, we had Dennis's E mail to arange our return trip this year, but have lost it, can anybody help.

Mary M  (03 February 2005)

Steven L  (02 February 2005)

Eaten here for the last 11 years, never had a bad meal yet! Everything here is fantastic, including the service. John, Jimmy & Dennis are really friendly and Angela's meals are out of this world! Hope everyone is well, and can't wait to see you all in May/ June

Gary & Elspeth  (21 November 2004)

Going to Kalamaki?, you must try Sugar Reef. We were there last week in Sept/first 2 weeks Oct this year. Sugar reef quickly became our favourite eaterie; "Angela, your pasta's were top notch, we loved your reef chicken and badly miss your pesto bread".
We had a superb time on the evening's we went to Sugar Reef a real friendly place with great food and quality drinks.
"Denis, your skill behind the bar is second to none mate, the honesty and quality of your work allows you to stand out from the rest".
This place ticked all our boxes and is what holidaying in Kalimaki
is all about, we'll be back soon.

Aubrey S  (01 November 2004)

JUST GOT BACK FROM ANOTHER GREAT HOLIDAY IN KALAMAKI AND AS USUAL WE ATE EVERY NIGHT IN SUGAR REEF BECAUSE WE KNOW THE FOOD,DRINK AND SERVICE ARE ALWAYS OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY AND ITS ONE OF THE FEW PLACES LEFT WHERE YOU DON`T GET HARASSED TO GO IN AS YOU WALK BY! THE BAR IS A GREAT PLACE TO CHILL OUT OR WATCH SPORTS AND IT DOESN`T ATTRACT THE NOISY LAGER LOUTS.TOP TIP-IF YOU ORDER THE PENNE ATLANTICO DONT GET A STARTER COS YOU GET LOADS AND IT IS TREMENDOUS!

Phil W  (11 October 2004)

This is the place to go! Try the trout and cocktails. Dennis and the team made us feel so welcome. Many a long night was spent at the bar trying as many cocktails as we could fit in. We had several meals here and each one was a winner. Very rarely do we return to a country 2 times in a row but we will be checking for the flight back asap.
Phil & Heather - Surrey

Anne S  (11 October 2004)

Just got back yet again from Zante and of course spent every night th the brilliant Sugar Reef. I have been here many times and have tried almost all of the dishes on the menu. Cant decide on a favourite as they are all fanastic. Much effort goes into the high quality of the food here and Angela is a fantastic cook. The cocktails too are amazing and still find the strawberry one my particular favourite. This is such a friendly place and nothing is too much trouble. Carry on with the excellent work Dennis and team, and will definately see you all in May and already looking forward to it. See you then Guys

Large V  (09 October 2004)

Came back to Kalamaki again last week for the 2nd time this year and of course we could'nt wait to go to the Sugar Reef again. Well what more can I add to this top class comfortable establishment???? I dont know how they do it Dennis Angela Yianni and jimmy they work very hard and and still are dishing out the most beautiful delecious meals cooked to perfection.Dennis we thank you again and boy what cocktails keep up the good work Dennis will be back again some time next year, you enjoy your rest until then

Brian O  (08 October 2004)

I cannot praise the place enough. By far the best meals in Kalamaki for quality, quantity and price. Very friendly service, relaxed atmosphere, spotlessly clean, good TV / music and conversation, and two great settees to relax on! Once we found the place (after 3 days of rain!) we were there every day for food and drinks and all the meals were excellent. The place certainly made our holiday and very best regards to all there from Brian and Carol (23 Sep - 7 Oct 2004).

Ben P  (07 October 2004)

This place is FANTASTIC!!!
The service is second to NONE.. and i mean europe wide!!! Pay close attention to the bar as you'll see all of Dennis' awards for his cocktails... and they are the BEST!!! My girlfriend even said that his cocktails are so beautifull, she didn't want to spoil them by drinking them!!!
Top place... Top Staff!!!!!!

Berni T  (05 October 2004)

As always 1st class service, 1st class food, and great cocktails, Plus Denis, Philosopher and Cocktail King, plays the most fantastic musical selction from Marc Almond to Crowded House. We are missing you all so much. See you next year. Thanks for always making our holidays unforgettable.

If you want a place you know you can go back to every year then this is it. Thanks dennis for a great evening. It was good to see you all again. What better way to spend my birthday than sat in the Sugar Reef drinking local rose wine and watching rugby league on TV. See you next year.

Mad   (29 September 2004)

Don’t go to Kalamaki without going to Sugar Reef - by far the friendliest bar/restaurant in the town, with a well-varied and value-for-money menu. Ate there ( & drank & drank…) numerous times – they must be given credit for consistently good food and great service. Great place for early morning coffee, relaxed afternoon drinks or an excellent evening meal (I’d kill to taste lamb cooked that well again). Inside/outside design all good - tables and comfy settees inside, nice outside area with laid-back and relaxed atmosphere. Just name your drink and you’ll be catered for. Clearly a place where people return year after year – many thanks to Dennis and his family/ staff for such brilliant welcome and service Madeleine

Stella P  (18 September 2004)

The service was good but the food was not so good. We came in the day when it wasn't busy, but our aubergines were overcooked and very dry. We also had garlic mushrooms which were cheap tinned mushrroms with minute specks of garlic.

Anne S  (16 September 2004)

Once again spent allmost every at the Sugar Reef. Had various meals all excellent-Thanks Angela. Every one at The Sugar Reef always so friendly and helpful. John Smiths still the best and the strawberry cocktails are wicked. Well done Dennis. See you all in May for a fortnight.

Eddie O  (09 September 2004)

went back again what more can i add ?
the place is just so great to hang out
enjoy a beautiful meal have a beer and
all in the company of the nicest people
you could ever hope to meet. If you want a
meal made with love eat here

Lee F  (11 August 2004)

Ive just come back from holiday in Kalamaki and spent almost every nite in sugar reef, thats how highly i rate it. The food is excellent, every meal i had i loved. Aside from the food this restaurant has something else none of the others can offer, Dennis' cocktails. You cannot go to kalamaki without trying these. In the past 2 years ive been going in there ive had hundreds. Dont worry if a cocktail you want isnt on the list, as he can just invent one for you on the spot. Ill definatly be back to this place again!

Thanks for all the great times Dennis

Best wishes

Lee & Hannah

Mike P  (10 August 2004)

Although we didn't have the pleasure of eating in this place, everyone we spoke to, spoke very highly of the food and a friend of ours (Lee Finnegan aka Gandalf) had previously made this haunt his regular.

Great service and Dennis is a great laugh. If you're gona drink any cocktails. Go base, you'll know what we mean when you go there.

Cheers for a good one Dennis. Alex, Alan, Neil and Paul.

Out of all the restaurants in Kalamaki, Sugar Reef has got to be one of the best. I think I have tried just about everyone, and I keep on returning to Sugar Reef. The food is excellent and the service is very friendly and efficient. My family and myself have been going out to Kalamaki for five years and we love Sugar Reef - I can most definitely recommend the lamb chops (with mint sauce) and the pork chop served with a huge jacket potato. Thanks Angela. I will see you all again September, and I am bringing the whole family out next year (Dennis, you might need more Mythos for Nicola and Darryl!)

Went to Kalamaki the start of June this year, just arrived at the apartments myself and girlfriend decided to go out for some thing to eat as we strolled out of the apartments we took a left and headed up towards the taxi rank only to be greeted by a guy touting for buisness outside a restaurant on the left hand side which looked new and immediatly said to my girlfriend, "our first night thats all we need now, people trying to shove us into some place and we are only 2hrs on the island,we thought we got this only in tacky resorts" but thankfully my partner noticed another restaurant directly across the road, we went over to have a look at the menu before the tout could come and start hassling us.To cut a long story short while my partner was looking at the extensive menu out side I was looking into the entrance between the lovely trees and flora it looked like the most peaceful and easy going place,it reminded me of other up market restaurants We have been in other Greek Islands, we decided to go in and were greeted by two very pleasent staff members we found out one of them was the owner, Dennis .We ordered our meals and God were they good, Dennis explained to me that his Mam Angela did all the cooking it was heavenly.(they do the most wonderful greek cuisine and also have an extensive international menu and are opened for breakfeasts also.)We then started to look at the cocktail list, I never saw the names of the cocktails on his list before, it wasn't your usual rubbish you get any where like Harvey wall bangers, etc. etc. they were ones he actually invented himself and won competitions with,if you don't believe me take a look at his trophies and photos behind the bar !! and if there is one you want made with your favourite tipple then nothing is impossible to this genius, we went to two other restaurants after that night which was reccommended to us by other people, but what a mistake. In the Sugar Reef, the service, the relaxing athmosphere the kindness of the entire staff which made us so comfortable, special was second to none, the food is out of this world, andat a very reasonable price, but its not the price even though inexpensive, its the quality and the the whole Greek thing that makes this fine restaurant worth visiting. We would reccomend this restuarant to anyone who might read this comment and we hope to make it back to Kalamaki next year, again Dennis Angela,Jimmy and John, thank you again for the most enjoyable two weeks it was a pleasure.

I am no culture buff i go away for sun,sea and the sand. I am really fussy about what I eat and where I eat it. I stopped into the sugar reef with 10 days of my 14 left to go and I didn't eat anywhere else after that. Dennis and the whole of his family/staff made us feel at home the food was exceptional the atmosphere was cozy friendly and laid back. The first thing you notice is that there is nobody outside pestering to get you to come in. Nothing was too much trouble for Dennis or his staff and believe me i could write a book about how i like this and that cooked and none of this and some of that(a bridlington landlady once threatend to beat me over the head with her frying pan cause i was that fussy with my food) The one fault i found with the Sugar Reef is simply it's in Zante and not here in Leeds so now i will have to wait till next year to enjoy the place and staff again. never mind 10/10 i give this place 11/10
