Marelen Hotel - (Accommodation in Kalamaki)

Jane E

We have just spent the last two weeks at this hotel and before we left we were really looking forward to it after seeing all the good things about it on this web site....I think all the staff must have changed when we arrived, they were rude and very unfriendly, Anastasia the receptionist needs to go and take a course on Customer Service. Everytime we went into the reception area, the staff (all related) were having slanging matches with each other (in greek of course) and bawling and shouting across the reception area where everyone was stood, very embarrasing. Also, if you are going thinking everything is paid for, you can forget it. We wanted to hire a fan (it was 40 degrees) Oh yes! a fan for two weeks, was an extra 32.50 euro, and the safety deposit box, that was another extra 25 euro, and if you wanted a fridge, well thats another 70 euro and on top of that, the air conditioning, well that was also extra. There were 60 safety deposit boxes and more than a hundred rooms!!!!. Breakfast was the same every day, bread, scrambled egg, cold beans, cereal etc, but be careful, if you get there around 9.15am, there is nothing left and the waitresses were very reluctant to refil anything. The dining room was full (and I mean full) of flies, there were insect lamp things but along with the airconditioning in the reception, they were never turned on. (got the impression they were penny pinching all the time) You could get a fantastic english breakfast if you were prepared to pay 4 euros for it. The snack bar food was exceptional but then again it's what you pay for. The pool is 3.3metres deep at the deep end and not much shallower at the shallow end, certainly not safe for children! The rooms were kept very clean and were probably the best thing about the hotel. Kalamaki was wonderful! The hotel Marelen - DREADFUL!!!!! Thought it was me but when I asked around, there were loads of people complaining about paying for all the extras (fridge, fan etc) Hope I havnt spoiled anyone's holiday but all the above is TRUE.

Beautiful location, pity about the food! Got up the stairs, and we were queueing to get a seat, good sign I thought. After waiting for around 5 mins, was seated in the centre of the roof, not good as the only lighting was a samll candle and you could not see what you were eating! I think that was the whole idea. I ordered the Logster tail saganaki, and guess what it was full of the preformed fish meat that you can buy in the supermarket shaped like lobster tails, it was ghastly! I thought I'd risk the rigatoni shipwreck,Described as rigatoni pasta in a rich tomato sauce with logster tails, shrimps, prawns mussels, yum it sounded lovely!! When it came, it was a tin of chopped tomato's with tinned, shrimps, mussels, the preformed lobster tails and tinned tuna, I left the lot! They need to get another chef for next year.

Aerides Restaurant - (Restaurants in Kalamaki)

I think this is the Aerides restraunt infront of the hotel Meandros directly across from the Cave Bar entrance? We ate here 4 times during out 2 week stay, and the food was exceptional. The Penne Arabiatta was sensational!!!! Service was a bit slow, but whose rushing when on holiday anyway! The staff were fantastic and very helpful. This is the best place to eat in Kalamaki

Mermaids - (Restaurants in Kalamaki)

After hearing such good comments, we went! Food was OK but very expensive and I think if i had gone to the toilet before I had eaten, I wouldnt have bothered. Very over rated!! If you do go, dont sit in the bottom corner on the right hand side when you walk in. There is a big white blanc sign just over your head that turns into a big screen and deafens you wether your eating or not!!!!! and the whole of the restaurant has their eyes on you!!!!!!

Well debsy, I did tell you about the flies!!!!! And as for your wallet, well we also lost some money in reception, there was only 3 of us there at the time myself, my husband and one of the hotel staff. From dropping it in reception walking down the steps and back up the money had gone and it was just after midnight so there was no one else around, and yes! the guy didnt give a damn. Sorry about your little ones tummy upset, maybe it was the flies all over the breakfast that caused it. Kalamaki lovely, hotel Marelen - definately not my cup of tea!!!!!
