Just returned from Kalamaki. If your idea of holiday is a British resort with sunshine - Kalamaki is for you. If you want a Greek holiday - forget Kalamaki.
The main (only) street is lined with restaurants all serving roughly the same menus, bars all with big screen TVs all playing as loudly as possible to outdo the next bar. The shops were all tourist-tat type shops and supermarkets serving the self-catering guests.
Having given the downside, we did actually enjoy our stay. Hired a car for 3 days (Merlis) and travelled all over the island. Very spectacular scenery. Favourite spot was Keri Beach - more Greek than other resorts - a couple of tavernas, nice harbour, small beach, good swimming.
Forget package transfers from airport to Kalamaki - it's only 5 minutes and 10 euros by taxi.
Re the airport - it's HORRENDOUS. At least using taxi for return you can set off an hour after the transfer buses and still be in plenty of time.
Just returned from Amaryllis Aparthotel. Couldn't fault it - apart from planes. But no night flights and we were out most of the day. The double-glazing and shutters cut out most of the noise early morning.
Closeness to airport meant we took taxi on arrival and departure - 5 minutes and 10 euros. Better than the transfer coaches especially when returning - can set off an hour after the buses and miss an hour's queueing outside the terminal.
The apartments were roomy and very clean. Ideal for families with swimming-pool and children's play area as well as pool and table-tennis.
Good mini-market and snack bar.
5 minutes stroll to beach.
Must say thanks to very helpful Lynda on reception - Manchester lass.
Fabulous view from "Best View of the Island" taverna - but drinks pricey
Can endorse all the positive comments about Mikaelos. We had three meals there last week and every one was spot on. The service was brilliant.
It was a bit of a walk from our apartment at the Amaryllis - took about 20 mins - but well worth it for the excellent service and food.
