Chris C  (10 August 2005)

And of course the staff at Mermaids have time to sit and monitor customer`s conversations? Give me strength.

David A  (10 August 2005)

What food, what prices.

Staff execellent

Jamie W  (10 August 2005)

I really don't understand why everytone raves about this restaurant.  I chose to eat at Mermaids on the second night of our holiday and once was definately enough.  The menu is certainly extensive but, on closer inspection, it seemed to me that there wasn't a great deal of variety between the hudreds of beef dishes.  The onr thing that really disappointed me was that we really were packed in like sardines.  When I'm dining, I really don't want to hear about the sexual exploits of a couple on my right and the bowel problems of a gentleman on my left.  I can understand why some people like this restautant but, for me, it was more pub grub than Greek cuisine.

Patricia S  (08 August 2005)

hi there con and adel and staff. i hace been fine since i got home. had a nasty enail from the parthanon they thought you had been feeding us bad comments on the place. thank you for the food in the hospital and the care i had when i got out.  love you all lots watch out for the albanian.??????? see you soon we hope. pat and dave xxxx

I cant wait to go back and have all those lovely meals they are the best in Kalamaki by miles!!
Missing you all and the meals lol
and sheryle, gary, shirley, colin and sam sed hello!!

Rosie B  (03 August 2005)

I visited Kalamaki for the 1st time 4 yeras ago, I ate at Mermaids then and was not impressed so have not eaten there any other year, until this year upon reccomendation from guests at hotel where we were staying. The food was excellent as was the service and price. I will definately not leave it 4 years to eat there again they have redeemed theirselves, however I think 'WORLD FAMOUS MERMAID RESTAURANT' may be a bit of an over statement. as there are other restaurants that serve better food in better surroundings.

Louisa C  (02 August 2005)

We ate at mermaids three times during our stay (twice evening meal, once for breakfast!), the rep even recommended it to us!
The food was lovely, with huge portions!
The only downside was the fact it was so busy! You feel quite rushed in there, but I can understand them wanting to get as many people through the doors as possible! They are definately the most popular restaurant in Kalamaki!

happy aniversary to luce mum and dad from mermaids.

J S  (29 July 2005)

I really enjoyed eating in that restaurant. But what I liked most were the desserts!! Gee! They were fantastic! I went there to eat every day so that I had a chance to be served by that cute guy who prepares and serves the desserts!!!!!! Well done Sotiris!!!

I'll be back soon for more!!!!

Lesley S  (28 July 2005)

Well where do i start? we found mermaids on our first night and were made to feel welcome straight away the food was very nice and reasonably priced the kids meals costs just 90cents(60p)my 10 year old  daughter was eating steak and chips everynight the steak was bigger than what you get over here for an adult.A meal for 2 adults and 2 kids with starters dinner dessert and drinks costs between 40-50 euros.

I cannot understand people saying that they felt rushed as we were never made to feel like that yes it does get very busy but we were always being asked if we needed anything and if everything was O.K.The waiters and waitresses were all very friendly especially with the kids my 2 loved the place that is why we went there every night for dinner and every morning for breakfast and mine are fussy eaters.

The menu is enormous they do everything from greek to italian to bangers and mash. One of my favourite was the fillet steak if was gorgeous as well as massive. The spag bols and chill con carne was very nice as well and all the dessert were delicious  i worked my way through them all!!!!

Ahother thing you must try is their greek night that they hold every  friday night thay do all the greek dancing  plate smashing and fire it is a really good night with a great atmosphere but get there early as it gets packed.

I really enjoyed my stay in kalamaki and mermaids contributed to this as we were always made to feel welcome and always recieved the best service we could have hoped we even had a table reserved for us for the greek night and when we left to come homeCry we were given mermaids t-shirts even the kids  i would like to say a big thank you to all the staff especially miri and adele and not forgetting the chef!

I cannot wait until we return to kalamaki and mermaids so keep up the good work!

Hello pete, Thanks for the comments mate,The mermaids team as always tries its best to satisfy every person that walks past those famous doors we do run around alot we do get tired but to be the number 1 restaurant in zante you have to be on the ball all the time we dont copy other restaurants as they have nothing that mermaids does not do alot better we havent made it on sky travel or no frontiers irish tv for just being a normal place but for being the best restaurant in zante and 9 years in kalamaki by far.alot of places have opened nearby and good luck to them all theydo is try what they can to get there customers in at the end of the day we are all here to give 100percent no one wants less.Ofcourse there are many restaurants that would love to know mermaids secret of success and i dont blame them alot try to copy but badly our proof is our customers and if you havent tried mermaids or are coming to kalamaki please remember when approaching mermaids and passing all nearby resturants have a look and see why mermaids is packed and the rest more than half empty that to me proves that when we say that we are the best by far we have a place packed that shows it.

so thankyou to all the british people for having such high praise for us and in this site in the top 5 and top 2 in the top 50 resturants thankyou and trust me we will get even better.

Pete G  (23 July 2005)

Hi folks, I have just returned from the best holiday of my life. My many thanks go to Con and Adele and the rest of the Mermaids team, for making our holiday the best ever.I have travelled to many greek islands in the past, but, this was the best for us, we walked down the main street in kalamaki on our first night and we noticed Mermaids was the fullest restaurant on the resort. We went in and recieved the warmest welcome we have ever had in any restaurant. the other places around Mermaids were empty, they were offering free drinks and special offers just to get you to eat in their place. For us, the only place to eat was Mermaids, we were not harrassed in any way, lovely welcome, excellent meals and the choice of fresh food was outstanding. We ate there everynight, different meals and starters, we were satisfied everynight. Wish we could have stayed for 2 weeks, we will definately book 2 weeks next year. Thanks once again Con for making our holiday the best ever, see you all soon, Yamass Malaka ( voythee)

Lisa M  (23 July 2005)

Bit late to add a comment really, we were there in June but never mind, we found mermaids great!

The service was really good, even although it was busy! The waiters and waitresses couldn't have been nicer, and the people inside in general were really friendly!

The food was great, big portions and a menu that has a lot of food on it!

All in all we loved mermaids and if we go back to zante we will certainly make an effort to go there!

Tony N  (23 July 2005)

Its a shame, this must have been the largest menu i have ever come across,so much variety and if only there was a restaurant like this in england

however service was bad, twenty minutes for a bottle of water "first drink"

to be honest the reason i think the service was poor for me was simply because there were so many people at the place, people were waiting for seats,so no doubt that proves they have a lot to offer.
maybe mermaids should look into more staff at peak hours ?
its a dam shame that i didnt enjoy my time there.

Nicola   (18 July 2005)

Patricia S  (18 July 2005)

thank you to cond adel and all the staff. thank you for the breakfast every morning while i was in the hospital. i had to spend 6 days in the hospital in zante and every day my husband brought me hot food from mermaids. thank you to all the staff for their support and best wishes and the food. hope to see you in september, if you will have us, lots of love to you all from pat and davexxxx

Leigh   (18 July 2005)

i luv mermaids, me and mi couzin wen there twice and both times the meal was gr8, the staff are sooo friendly and combined with our favourite club plus soda it made it even better. Am soooo gutted to be home tho, got back yesterday

Cm M  (15 July 2005)

Hello Nicola, sorry edward doesent work here anymore and we havent seen him for at least 2 months not sure where he is but will notify you when i do see him see you soon.

Nicola M  (15 July 2005)

Hello to any of the mermaid staff, i was wondering if any1 who works at mermaids still keeps in touch with edwardo who used to work there last year, do you know how i will be able to contact him, i know that he works at down under now Nicola

Fiona B  (12 July 2005)

We have tried every restaurant in Kalamaki over the last 7 years and there is only one that we have never failed to return to - The one and only MERMAIDS.  This year in particular it was good to see that the quality of the food and service were the only "gimmick" needed to bring in the crowds.  Unlike other establishment which had press gangs on th doors literally dragging you in and offering free drinks and desserts so you would sit at their tables.  I had 2 children under 10 with me who were traumatised by the lout who grabbed me by the arm and tried to drag me into Parthenon.  Needless to say all Mermaids had to do to get our custom was open the kitchen.

Superb food with a fantastic choice for ALL the family at reasonable prices, along with a superb compliment of staff who never failed to ensure that you had all you needed.

Definitely worth a visit - especially the Greek Night.

Try the Mixed grill if you dare - If you can eat it all , I may even foot the bill for You!!!!!!!!

Debbie W  (11 July 2005)

Hi we ate at mermaids again this year about 4 times. the food was lovely. The service is very good and the waiters and waitresses very friendly and will do anything to help you. I had chicken fillet twice and you gets load of it. but my best meal was the cod and chips and the lamb chops was georgeous. would definatley recommend mermaids.

See you next year
Debb and Chris

Cm M  (10 July 2005)

Hello Terri, Thankyou for the great comments yes we will be here next year and at least another eleven more so hope to see you and your family again. If you want to email me its mermaids@otenet.gr speak to you soon.

Terri-ann W (10 July 2005)

Hi Con, my name's Terri-ann Walsh. not sure if you remember me, but i have been to zante quiet alot, and even asked you for work there, two years ago. I'm just emailing to ask will Mermaids still be there next season. As i'm coming back over. Hope you and your family are all well. Terri-ann

Terri-ann W  (10 July 2005)

I ahve been to Zante 5 times, and always stayed in Kalamaki, Mermaids is the best restaurant i have been to there, to be honest. When i'm there, it's the only place i eat. The food is amazing, and the staff are really nice, i know Con and his wife very well. As me and my family have been going there for years, i was even planning on going out there to work last year, i even asked Con for work, either in mermaids or angels bar. But my plans were ruined. I'm coming back again Con next year. Hope Mermaids is still there, and all the staff.
See You Soon

Terri-ann Walsh.

Craig J  (08 July 2005)

What can i say, big thumbs up to all the mermaids staff. What a brill restaurant, food was fantastic getting better every time. Staff are all great, very helpful and even when they were extreamly busy always took a minute to ask how your day had been.

Would definately reccommend your place to anyone who is visiting zante and personally we would return to zante just for your food and excellent service.

The only bad thing we can say about your restaurant is that it made us put on a lot of weight because it was so tasty we couldn't keep away.

Do you deliver to the UK.

Bye for now!!!

Lisa M  (08 July 2005)

Mermaids was great! Went there a few times on our holz! The Food was really good, price was good too and the service was excellent considering how busy it was!

Floyds R  (03 July 2005)

All the staff are extremely friendly and helpful , nothing is too much trouble for them.
The service is second to none.
Food is excellent and so many dishes to choose from it's hard to decide what to eat.
Con told me to say that he is the best-looking restraunteur in Kalamaki.
Excellent value for money.

Nicola B  (28 June 2005)

We've just returned from 2 weeks in Kalamaki and I we ate in mermaids 5 nights out of the 14 and what can I say wow what a choice and whatever we chose we were never  Laugh disapointed and we were always pleasantly surprised when we got the bill.

The only slight downside was the service but I suppose when you are always so busy it must be difficult to concentrate on customer service,we just felt that we recieved a more personal touch  in other places.
But we still loved it anyway we did read this site before we travelled and we took into consideration all
the reviews of  where to go and where not to,and you were soooooooooooooo right, you guided us along
to one of the best hols weve ever had

Mermaids at 7.45 pm, best get a table quick!!! and just a small part of their extensive menus catering for everyone and with food from across the world!

Paul M  (24 June 2005)

After reading all the good reviews of this restaurant it was the first place we headed, what a let down!

The food in this place was at best average, all four of us sat at the end of our meal and where we normally tell each other how good this or that was, there were just 4 disappointed faces.  There were no fussy eaters in our party.

I can see why this place is popular, the range of dishes it does and the (British)style of food appeals to a lot of people.  I eat out a lot at home and when I go somewhere it is only about the food, cost, setting etc. do not matter, if you have a great meal you are more than happy.

Mermaids was not disgusting as some have said but was definatly in the Brewers Fayre bracket. All four of us had differant starters and main courses and noboby said that they would like to return and try anything else. We repeated some of the dishes at other restaurants and were much more impressed with them.  My mate made a great point while we were there, Mermaids would be better serving 20 really good choices than 400 average ones.

Chris C  (24 June 2005)

4 nights, 4 meals in Mermaids. Head Chef Dimitri`s award winning Moussaka is a must-try for anyone, never had one like it (mind you he caters for Greek MPs so it was bound to be good!)

The restaurant is packed every night, and you`ll soon see why, when others give away puddings and wine to get you in Mermaids has no need to, the food speaks for itself. Superb staff, fantastic food! See you all next month!

Con M  (23 June 2005)

Hello to all our great customers and new ones as well,Even though its been a hard year for zante in general mermaids has been getting better and more superior than any restaurant in kalamaki by a big margin.I would like to say thankyou to the irish tv programme no frontiers for voting mermaids as the best one of the best resturants in zante and to all the british people that have made us work harder for the best in service and food.Allot of resturants are suffering at the moment in kalamaki but we promise to give you as allways the best thankyou to you all.

pat cant wait to see you again.Chris you are a great dj.
hope to see you all soon.

Jen M  (21 June 2005)

Loved it! Went last year and can't wait to go back! The waiters were lovely specially some of them sadly i never caught their names they are always too busy! The food was lovely as was the whole atmosphere of the restaurant.

Patricia S  (21 June 2005)

bad news con, we are coming back. cannot say much about it at this time as it is a suprise for the albanian. anyway get the stiffardo ready we gave booked our flights. love to all pat and dave xx

Gary M  (18 June 2005)

Holiday in Kalamaki this year 15th May to 5th June had a great time stayed at Antonis Apts. Went to Mermaids night before champ league final – Liverpool – I'm not a fan I'm afraid. Anyway Mermaids, my wife and I thought why not we'd eaten there whilst on the island about 4 years prior and our perceptions of the place have not changed.

I had a chicken fillet dish which was all dressed up with frills and plenty veg / salad but the chicken was not great on taste or portion, although with all the other stuff on the plate it looked a hefty portion.  Focus on the chicken would have suited me better.

My wife's pasta dish was served luke warm and was cold within a couple of mins but we did have a

laugh when the waiter – who wished he had not asked if all was ok, suggested he could reheat the pasta.

The red wine we had was local and quite good and the lager I had was cold but hey all eateries in this area serve reasonable wine and cold beer. Price wise it is more expensive but if it had lived up to the blurb on the boards outside that would have been okay.

Would we recommend Mermaids - no. The infamous Mermaids did not live up to its claims for us.

There are many other fine restaurants in Kalamaki.

Roger T  (16 June 2005)

If you like a proper full English breakfast while on holiday rather than the continental style breakfast, then this is the place to go. Only went in once for an evening meal and that was very good, but went in every day for breakfast and it was really excellent. I think they called it an outbacker (or something like) on the menu and it costs around 5 euros, but it was better than the full english breakfast we get in England!! Well worth the visit.

Chris C  (16 June 2005)

Here I come, on my way Sunday night!!! See you on Monday folks, trying to decide what to have already!!

Patricia S  (14 June 2005)

well what can we say. had breakfast every day and some meals at night. the only reason we did not eat every night was my husband got sun sickness and we had friends we had to see. thanks con and addel. once again you made us feel at home. grub fantastic. service great. shame about the albanian. (con knows, in joke). back in september for 3 or 4 weeks. lots and lots of love to you all. hope luries dad is better, give him our love. pat and dave xxx

Ruth C  (14 June 2005)

have just come back the best meals we had by far, we had dinner twice + breakfast once.
first time i had the zakinthian lemon chicken is absolutely superb, my husband had the zakinthian  beef hot pot both excellent,  fast service friendly people and great value.
The second dinner we had there we both had daily specials both very good big meals and very tasty,it was a busy saturday night and still the service was very fast, people kept on coming in they didn't turn anyone away and still served everyone promptly.
THE PLACE TO GO FOR THE BEST MEAL IN KALAMAKI !!!!!!!!

R K  (12 June 2005)

Found this a very crowded restaurant, and one to avoid if you don't like sitting very close to tables full of smokers. We drew a short straw and were subjected to smoke constantly drifting across our table from heavy smokers at the next table and this ruined the meal. The food was average - not really authentic - just nothing special and there are much better places to get a real Greek meal in Kalamaki. We are regular visitors to Kalamaki and will certainly not be going back to Mermaids.

Ashleigh G  (09 June 2005)

and the winner of the best food award goes to...Mermaids!!!
Mermaids is a great place.when i visited zakynthosi went to mermaids for tea every night and i also loved the entertainment in plus soda thet was very cool too.all of the family enjoyed it and i hope to visit again soon.and i must say the food was gorgous and everyone who visits zante must try mermaids.

Ashleigh G  (09 June 2005)

your food was lovely can't wait to visit again whaen i do i will always come to mermaids i loved the chicken fillet and the lamb chops and i also loved the greek night but i didn't like the fire bit.hope to see you again soon luv ash

Lynne J  (09 June 2005)

Ok place to eat, service not up to much, waited to be served after several others had been served who arrived after us. Food was a bit on the greasy side, not traditional Greek food, depends what you prefer I suppose. Didn't go there again.

Jean T  (07 June 2005)

You may not remember us after all you have so many visitors each year, but Nick never forgets a bum so just to let you know that Holly & Lucy are leaving for Laganas this Sunday 12th & will no doubt call in to see you at some time during  their two week stay, just keep Lucy away from Yiannis.I have just booked a week commencing 10th July for Trevor & myself so Nick can get the TVR"S ready for Trevor, we promise to behave ourselves this year, getting too old for any debauchery, looking foreward to seeing all the old faces again. Much love Jean & Trevor X

Martin S  (06 June 2005)

over cooked and over priced

There are a lot better but just don't have the hype.

Perhaps we just got them on a bad night.

Con M  (04 June 2005)

Thanks again luce and you know we will always try our best too make everyones holidays a great one as that is the satisfaction we strive for.But you must admit yiannis has big ears.

Luce   (04 June 2005)

To Con + All the Mermaids staff.. Great presentation of fod here on every occassion. 7 great meals from 7 great nights.. Breakfast good too. Service is excellent, and after al, you get what you pay for, and Mermaids is great.. Thanks guys

Siobhan P  (03 June 2005)

Such a large menu to choose from! Plenty of dishes to suit everyone. We had The Main One Platter which was excellent. The best ribs I have ever tasted. They were cooked to perfection and the meat just fell off the bone.

Jane H  (30 May 2005)

Well if you want good food, good service and at an excellent price, then a visit to Mermaids is without a doubt a must.   Adele and Con are the friendliest people I have met on the island.   I have never seen so much scrumcious food on one plate.  I also visited Plus Soda and was amazed by the entertainment provided by Ginge.... how extraordinary....! What a fabulous all round night out.  Well recomended to anyone.   ENJOY EVERYONE....!!     Bye the way i highly recomend the mushroom wrapper and the DELICIOUS COFFEES and breakfasts.

Brian M  (29 May 2005)

I'm sorry but I vsited Mermaid twice this year and was relatively disapointed on each occasion. On the first occasion the food was mediocre and on the second visit even worse. I ordered salmon fillets and got salmon steaks with bones. The service is excellent though and I cannot fault that. I definitely think that Mermaid is over priced, but despite my experiences would still recommend as I've had better meals here in previous visits. There's a lot more restaurants now though in Kalamaki so go here once and then try elsewhere is my advice.

Kathy H  (24 May 2005)

The food was very good and varied from trad Greek food to fast food.  The presentation was the best we had all week with large square plates with herbs and spices drizzled over the edges - very pretty.  However....we are 40 somethings and found it was really geared to wards the young people with loud music, TV screens, etc.  Also we like our bread on a plate not balanced on a serviette.  To be positive we did enjoy the food and the service was very efficient and very fast (a bit too fast to be relaxing).  If you have teenagers they will love it!

Bill A (11 May 2005)

My wife and I enjoy walking. Is there any good walking trails around the resort.

Peter G  (03 May 2005)

i cant really comment. The food is A1, the service is second to none, the boss is good looking, from nottingham, not that greek guy.he's australian.ok lades, hes nice looking too, if you like that thing.Anyway, the food is ou

Keith M  (22 February 2005)

Seem to be in a minority but thought food was ok but lacked Greek atmosphere! Very cosmopoloton staff very eager to get us out! Recommend Parthanon or Mikaelos for proper Greek night Superb! Mermaids do a great breakfast though!

Con M  (07 February 2005)

Hello Chris just want you to know mate that mermaids and plus soda are always behind you and alot of the places in kalamaki for giving good info of this resort and all that it has to offer.I would not worry about comments like amy williams or should i say the many different names she he comes under as these are people not wanting to help others ignore them and keep doing your great work thanks mate.

Pete A  (19 January 2005)

We were in Zante in Sept 2004 and we both loved Mermaids! The choice was amazing and the food itself was great, but as much as anything all the staff made us feel so welcome that we kept on going back and back. The night before we went home was great fun-with a massive storm doing the roof some damage-but the food was still great. One lady in particular (boss lady we think :-))made us feel so welcome, often giving me a good slap, much to the girlfriends amusement. Club soda was tops to (still got my tee shirt). Hope we'll see you all again some time!

Claire   (21 November 2004)

Oh my god!! I just read a bad comment about Mermaids, it's not possible, the place is amazing!!

The atmosphere in the evenings is great and they do a traditional Greek night - which me and my friends didn't stay for, not really our thing but for some it would be good fun - the food is out of this world, the menu is huge, and if you don't like something thats on it they'll change it cause it's all cooked freshly!

We thought the even more amazing thing was that when we didn't get up for the hotel breakfast in the mornings (quite often) Mermaids serves breakfast until 2.30pm (better than MacDonalds) and just the variety of breakfasts is something to boast about!!

I'd definitely recommend going there just to check it out and i can almost guarantee you'll be going there at least once more before you go home!!

Fiona   (30 October 2004)

We went to the Mermaids as a one off when we hired a car and was travelling around the islnad - we were actually staying in Alykanas. We found the restaurant to be superb - lovely food, great service. We got stranded in there on our second visit during a terrible storm, and we did not feel pressured to leave, just kept drinking coffee and keeping the kids entertained until it stopped. It must say something that we made 4 trips over to Kalamaki just to eat there! And their Greek Night was great fun - but do be careful with the fire!!

Sarah B  (22 October 2004)

We had our first meal of the holiday here, it was nice and as everyone has said very busy with excellent service, but i felt the huge tv's showing english programmes ruined the atmosphere for me. The waiters were great and the selection on the menu was huge, i would have thught it would be good for families.

M   (19 October 2004)

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but if you haven't actually been in the kitchen then how would you know that food could be cooked in the microwave? the waiters all rush around because they are trying to serve everybody as well as they can. i have been in mermaids for food for 7 years now and i have never had a complaint about. the chicken souvlaki is great, and they always have good specials. Its always busy which suggests something.
hope you all have a good winter, you all deserve a rest, look forward to seeing you all next year.

Ian R  (18 October 2004)

What's this all about. We went to Mermaids on our first night in Kalamaki and had the roast lamb. It was straight out of the micro wave and did not resemble anything like traditional greek food that it was supposed to be. The service was quick but that seemed to be so they could get us out and in to the cocktail bar next door. If you want good traditional food, friendly service and a relaxed meal then give mermaids a miss.

Patricia S  (17 October 2004)

hi there con adel and team. we are back home in the wet and the cold, what i would give for a beef stiffado and david says can he have a chicken hot pot. thanks again for a wonderfull 3 weeks. by the way good new guys i have put on a stone, my doctor will be thrilled. just been reading through the comments and had to chuckle, we have had 7 weeks over there this year, taught your chef how to make yorkshire puds, spent more time in the kitchen than i do in my own. anyone who knocks the place take con's advice and go and take a look. better still go for breakfast about 9.30 to 10.30 am and watch the fresh food being delivered. go in there about 1 am and watch the left overs getting slung. i am not going to get in to a row about mermaids. people grumble because it is busy and the staff are in a hurry, well does that not show how good it is. some of the knockers should read what they have wrote before they send them off. they do not make sense. anyway gang thanks for everything. love to you all, see you soon. pat and davexxxx

Lu C  (17 October 2004)

no way mate, all the workers there so friendly, best quality food, and excellent service in kalamaki. Dont know what tour missing if you havent tried here.

Anne P  (17 October 2004)

Not the best restaurant in Kalamaki. Quite expensive compared to others. Lots of flies around, and dirty tables.

Chris B  (16 October 2004)

also heard great reports about the mermaid.
more like eating in a BREWERS FARE,

John A  (15 October 2004)

chris is you find the mobile unlocked text me mate been looking all the same price.

Denise W  (10 October 2004)

Tried both breakfast and evening meal here and although it was nice i would say we had just as good food in other places...maybe we hit a bad day but we waited nearly an hour for breakfast and had to ask for our table to be cleared.this was one of the most expensive places for evening meal but still cheap in comparison to the uk so cant complain.

Brian O  (08 October 2004)

Tried it once and that was enough. The meals were disgusting.

Jadey B  (07 October 2004)

Jean T  (30 September 2004)

SORRY MISSED THE RATINGS ON PREVIOUS E-MAIL, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE OFFENCE AS I HAVE NOW RECTIFIED THIS. JEAN

Jean T  (30 September 2004)

Hello Nick, Con & yiannis, so you have had to put up with Holly & Lucy for a 2nd time this year, I trust they have behaved themselves. Trevor & I were really envious when they telephoned to say they were having a great time & had met up with some familiar faces, not to mention having their bottoms pinched by Nick at the airport (I will speak with him when we return next year). I hope to bring our sons & their other halves next time if I can persuade them to come, that will be an eye-opener. We holidayed in Lanzarote & Turkey as well as Zante this year but neither compared to Kalamaki & the great hospitality you provided. See you next year, maybe June, hope you have had a fantastic year, Jean & Trev ESSEX XXX

P J  (24 September 2004)

Seriously do you have to comment on everyones posting?

People are allowed to post their opinions of the place, I'm sure you will disagree with some but as an adult you should respect other people tastes and opinions without getting all juvinele.

We all by now know you love it at Mermaids - let others have their say (as unjust as you feel some may be) it is their right, it is called democracy. This isn't a debate page but a review page so just leave it at that.

Regards,

Svanhild K  (22 September 2004)

Maybe the food was OK, but we were drowned in incredibly noisy music from the restaurant's own loudspeakers as well from the bar next door. We went elsewhere to have coffee and sweets, as we were totally exhausted by the noise when we had finished the main meal. We will not come back here.

Chris C  (18 September 2004)

forgot to put the ratings in below!!! should be excellent sorry!
It`s always crowded due to quality by the way (re:post below!)

Chris C  (17 September 2004)

14 nights, 14 meals again. Tried some more items off the 400-dish menu, chicken risotto, szechuan steak wrapper, Chinese stirfry, Greek chicken amongst others!
Superb meal every night, thanks to everyone and all the great staff!

Andy & Hayley  (17 September 2004)

Waited ages to get served only seemed interested in serving larger groups. Cant fault food when it did eventually arrive.

Becca & Peter  (14 September 2004)

Just returned from Kalamaki and visited this restaurant twice! Absolutely lovely food and the service was excellent! We had our starters and then our main courses both within 30 minutes! Very good value for money and would definately recommend visiting Mermaids!

Emma C  (07 September 2004)

im only 13 but i loved mermaids and miri is da best!!!!! luv u lads c u soon!!!

Paul S  (02 September 2004)

Not quite as good as we'd hoped, having read some of the other reviews. Everything was OK, but nothing exceptional, so overall we felt it was slightly over-hyped. Also, the corner we were sitting in (near the road) smelt of drains.

Lucy M  (31 August 2004)

The meaning of the restaurant being full.. doesnt that suggest something to you?

I had several lovely meals here.. thanks con, see you next year :) luce..aka greek_princess

Tom T  (31 August 2004)

not the best place to eat a bit slow service(took 50mins forthe meals) but it was busy ,if you didnt get there by 8:30pm you couldnt get a table also a bit pricey but food was good

Patricia S  (27 August 2004)

hi there con, glad to see people still love mermaids. bad news, good news. good news we are not over there yet, bad news is 4 weeks and will be with you. i need the beef stiffardo, david is missing grandma's chicken hot pot. only 3 weeks this time. cannot wait to see the new club, we saw it being built and now i can do. 1 mataxa, 2 mataxa, 3 mataxa, floor. how are you fixed for the hospital? lots of love. pat and dave.xxxxx

Debbie W  (19 August 2004)

Hi we went to the mermaids twice on holiday and we had a lovely meal both times you get loads to eat. i had chicken fillet dippers for starters and then followed by steak and i couldnt eat it all. my husband had potatoe wedges for starters and again he had fillet steak and couldnt eat all his main course. they staff was very friendly i would recommend mermaids to anyone

Nick D  (19 August 2004)

Fantastic food!!!!!, however service was little slow because they are always busy. V.V.V Good though

Lu C  (18 August 2004)

mmm the best chicken tikka, and jacket potato's in Kalamaki! shall deffo be eating here again! and having my "yanki doooo" brekki lol :P

Jemma P  (17 August 2004)

We ate here on our first night and we were pretty tired after a long day so we were starving,I had a lasagne and my boyfriend had a pizza although the pizza was quite tasty the lasagne lacked any taste at all it was just a bowl of slop with a whole block of cheese melted on top. Nether the less we ate there again and I had a chicken sunday roast and my partner had bangers and mash which we both enjoyed. The restaurant also claims to do the best breakfasts though we didn't think they were that big, but other than that it was quite nice. I would recommend it if your a veggie cause there is quite a larger range of meals, but the food isn't fantastice but what do you expect from a restaurant that sells practicly anything, its not all going to be that fresh.

Frank D  (16 August 2004)

AFTER READING SO MUCH ABOUT IT BEFORE WE WENT WE HAD TO GO AND TRY FOR OURSELVES.AFRAID TO SAY IT DID NOT MATCH UP TO WHAT WAS WRITTEN.A LOT OF CHOICE WITH A LONG WAITING PERIOD AND THE FOOD WAS STILL COLD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STUFFED TOMS.....

Leanne C  (15 August 2004)

Went here about 7 nights out of 14, massive menu with everything on. Great service and friendly staff.Always packed due to its popularity but never had to wait long for food. 10/10

Lu C  (15 August 2004)

Hey guys! its me Luce (jennys friend) Yianis you will understand.. thanks for a good time, I wont forget you.. Yiannis I promised I would oput something on here for you.. your a little cutie, and ill never forget you!! :) Maybe see you next year.. love you lots byee xxx luce xxx
PS: the chicken tikka is the BEST here!! :)

Helena W  (13 August 2004)

Hi all, i have been reading all your debates on the meals in mermaids. To be honest, i have never ate there, basically because i have only ever been to Tsilivi, although i did take a day trip to Kalamaki last October. I have just been looking at the photo's on the data base, and must be honest in saying that, that mixed grill looks absolutely scrummy. The restaurant itself looks clean and the staff look very friendly on the photo's. I wouldn't hesitate in dropping in for a bit to eat myself when i am on the island in 4 weeks time. Lastly i would say that Zakynthos is a very beautiful island, and in terms of food, so far i have been fortunate enough to enjoy everything i have eaten, and take it from me, i am very fussy when it comes to food. I would also like to add a little to the comment which was made about waiting ages for food in the restaurant. Before making negative comments about the standard of food and having to wait a long time, doesn't that tell you something? You would have something to complain about if your chicken or steak was served to you within 10 minutes of ordering it, accusing the chef of not cooking your meal properly. Maybe waiting a little longer for food shows just how thoughtful and precise the Greeks are in making sure that the presentation of your food is of a high standard. Like i've always said, they bend over backwards to please us. No wonder some of us Brits are seen as having a bad reputation!! Sadly this spoils it for the decent ones. I have one last thing to say, and that is, if you don't like the Greeks, their culture, and spend all your time moaning and groaning about their food and their beaches, then save the rest of your holiday money for a flight and jump on the next available plane home. There is a huge difference between making a fair comment, and being damned rude and obnoxious about everything.

Rachel   (10 August 2004)

ello . well firstly id like to say the best part of mermaids was meeting miri.i had a really nice meal everytime i ate here which was 8/14 nights so for me to return that many times proves the place is worth a visit.wasnt impressed with the manager making me dance on greek night or throwing me into foam or making me dance alone with the man on a table.but still i enjoyed myself despite that haha cya all real soon and be good xmiss u.

Louisa   (06 August 2004)

Yannis, the bar guy... what gorgeous eyes.
He came across as a bit of a big head, but nevertheless he was lovely.
By the way, do you fling ice cubes at everyone ?!?

Lucy P  (06 August 2004)

Just got back from Kalamaki 2days ago and it was the best holiday ever.
We had breakfast there a couple of times and it was great ... evenings were better in my opinion though. Staff worked terribly hard... nothing is too much trouble for them.
Had a mushroom wrap one night... I'd say that was my best meal there. It was lovely.
I'll raise my hat to Con ... he does an excellent job as do all his staff.
Keep up the good work and hope to see you all again next year.
Lucy xx

S M  (06 August 2004)

Thanks Chris :-)

Chris C  (06 August 2004)

Ste, I`ve texted Con and he wil try and find out for you!

S M  (05 August 2004)

Hello all - For any of you going or have been to the Greek night at Mermaids - i need a realy speacial favour. When the greek dancers get everyone up and going onto the street n' stuff they place a really cool record. Its not the Zorba - its got abloke and kids singing in it. HAve tried searching the internet for it - but not found anything. If your going would you ask for me? Or if you have been - do you know what it is? Bit of a sad request - but it would be really good to find out what it was called a listen to it again!!!

If you find out - either leave a message on here or email me at steleeds@aol.com THANKS!!!!!!!

John T  (03 August 2004)

Sorry mate, humble pie is not on the menu!!!!!!!!!!!!
A hundred more items are though. Fresh and good value for money

Chris C  (03 August 2004)

As a closing note I have received an email from Trevor and I think he feels the same as most of us that it got a bit personal and messy so I reckon that draws a line under the debate, and I appreciate the email!

Trevor H  (02 August 2004)

Hello Guys

Think this whole thing has spiralled out of control!!!

Here is my initial posting about the restaurnat:

Bit cramped.....good atmosphere and wide menu at pretty cheap prices.
Bit dissapointed with the food. Wife had a pizza---came from a packet like Goodfellas...not that they are bad but you would expect a proper one.

I had one of the chicken wraps...was made from preformed chicken escalopes chopped up and not even chicken breast---pretty poor.

Suppose they have about 400 items on the menu so you could not expect made food....it is all a bit premade in the factory and then reheated at Mermaids. Depends what you are used to I suppose but you could pay more and get less like some of the other restaruants!!!The reason I have kept putting comments on was that noone it seemed was allowed to post their opinion without being slagged off. I just connot believe the comments that have been posted on the 'Resorts' page. I have tried to lift myself out of it all by reposting what I originally posted. This does state that you could pay more and get less for your money than in Mermaids.

I have to say that I do raise my hat to Con has he has always replied to my posts with decency and courtesy. No matter what has been stated he has always remained the gentleman.

As mentioned above, I has initially stated my own opinions. Maybe there are people on this site that should learn that by ridiculing everyone else comments it therefore defeats the whole purpose of the site......and this site is without doubt the best laid out on of a lot.

Anyway...as I have said, I hav simply put down my own opinions to start off with. Maybe I shoudl keep them to myself in the future

Cheers

Con M  (02 August 2004)

HI CHRIS HE SAID HE DOESENT KEEP RECORDS BUT STILL LOOKING FOR THAT SONG.

Trevor H  (30 July 2004)

Leon

I meant to say----dont think Mermaids pretends to be a traditional greek restaurant so cant really knock them on that. They only pretend to be world famous and in the top 100 in Europe.

I wonder how they must rate in the world anyhow.....must go and look in my Michelin guide

Trevor H  (30 July 2004)

Hi Leon

Glad someone else has the sense to post sensible comments about Mermaids. Next they will be saying it is an alias for me.

Did not know the info about top 100 restaruants in Europe--this gave me a real laugh.

Con...did you make this bit up about top 100 restaruants......this is an absolute joke.....Mermaids would never even come a million miles of some of the good restarants I have been in.....and there are loads of better ones than them.

As Leon says and I agree...the food is average...nothing special but this hype about world famous etc.

All I can say is go and catch a grip of yourselves...world famous --still laughing!!!

Leon T  (30 July 2004)

First of all Mermaids could not really be described as a Greek restaurant! It
has a (albeit massive) menu of mainly international dishes that could be
eaten at any Brewers Wharf, Harvester, Wacky Warehouse type pub here in
the UK! If you don't go on holiday to experience the local cusine and
atmosphere and like to 'play it safe' food wise, then Mermaids maybe the one
for you! Personally we found it to be very average and a little on the pricey
side! Not bad by any means but not for us! Claims that it's 'One of the Top 100
Restaurants in Europe' and 'Best Restaurant in Zante' are a little silly realy!!!

Chris C  (29 July 2004)

evening Trevor, it`s delivered daily by water tanker. Also delievered daily are all the meats (imported specially), the fish is bought from Zante town daily, etc etc, email me Trevor if you would, cheers!

Trevor H  (29 July 2004)

Good evening Chris

Personally I think this forum is for discussions like this. I was just wondering what you sold to restaurants???

REgarding the chicken wraps that I supposedly decry---is this site not for posting opinions on food and restaurants. I had simply stated my opinions.

I liked your other post regarding the mountain spring water stored under the restarant......amazing at sea level---how does that work then.....as in --how does it get there.

Its amazing that they can organize mountain spring water at sea level but cant sort out toilets that work!!{S>Hi Con.....my brother owns two pizza places and my aunt is Italian.....if that was a freshly made base it was pretty badly done...sorry!! I do know what an excellent pizza is like. As said below I have had worse but personally I think if you set your restaurant up with this 'World-famous' gimmick then you will probably come in for a bit of critism sometimes.

Chris C  (29 July 2004)

My email Trevor, ultrasound@supanet.com

I`ve eaten in 85% of Kalamaki restaurants, that`s what I compare Mermaids to.
Amongst my customers back home to whom I sell are 5 star hotels, AA double rosette award winners. The comment about micro meals was tongue in cheek, humour not being one of your strong points. I tried to debate in a friendly fashion with you on the Resorts guide but you obviously hated your holiday in Kalamaki, not a problem if it`s not for you, but why pick on this restaurant.

As for the wraps you decry, there are about 9 sorts on the menu, not all are breaded.
And the seafood platter you slate, one item is fried, the calamari.
email me trevor if you want to continue this,I`m not doing it on here.

Holly T  (29 July 2004)

hi everybody at mermaids don't no if u rember us. yannis was obsessed wiv lucy who only ate chicken nuggets. we were there in may and the may before aswell. nick dundee will remember lucy as the chief. we r c*mmin back in september for 2 weeks. is the new club open yet next door/????

Con M  (29 July 2004)

sorry trevor i now see that you do not know my restaurant at all since you say that my pizza bases are premaid and not fresh well it goes to show that you are the one that has compleatly gotten us mixed up with some fast food place near by my pizzas are made fresh each day and like i told you before i invite you in my kitchen to see just how we prepare from our pizzas to everything else and to prove to you that you are wrong i invite the webmaster as well to come and inspect my kitchen as this is a site so people can add comments on not argue so no dont pick on people like chris that have eaten in all of kalamaki and that has enjoyed mermaids lets cut the argueing here next time you come i will get my chef to show you how he prepares each day his pizza bases chicken and much more im sorry trevor you have really got mermaids wrong and to close i challenge all restaurants to do this then you can come back and comment.

Trevor H  (29 July 2004)

Mr Chadwick

No wonder it was on Greek TV---its world famous isnt it.
and
No wonder that mermaids has a ten out of ten rating with the amount of irrelevant posts that you put on it. Have you never heard of email to communicate with other people.

Regarding you knocking my comments about the food. Please find copied comments from one of your earlier posts below:

21 meals and up to 12 of us going each night, no-one ever had the slightest problem with the meals, back now to microwave meals and Chinese till next year Sorry mate, but if all you eat all year is microwave meals and Chinese takeaways, who are you to comment on any restaurant or food. If you eat frozen c**p all year then you are going to be impressed with anything served to you.

Thanks Con for your messages....I had stated your restaurant served good value food for somewhere with such a wide selection on the menu.
I did state that the pizza my wife got was a premade base....please dont try and say it was freshly made because it most certainly was not. As for the chicken....why do you bread the chicken fillets....no one else does when they make wraps....why not just slice, spice and then cook as everyone else does. The only reason i can think that you do this is to allow you to deepfry them and then slice them to save on time....could not blame you Con with the amount of covers you are doing!!! But sorry,...still dont think they are fresh chicken fillets..sorry{S>

John T  (28 July 2004)

What a fantastic restaurant. Cant wait to go back. The meals were fantastic. Thanks a lot for good food, good service and really nice people. The TIMOTEI FAMILY

Chris C  (27 July 2004)

and was featured on national Greek TV as the best restaurant in Kalamaki while I was there if I remember correctly?
Coming out again end Aug/start Sep, boss has said yes to some advance hol so see you all soon!!

Con M  (27 July 2004)

And as for the seafood platter im sure you have seen kalamari before it does need to be breaded also there is crab, swordfish, prawns, salmon and seafood rissoto and seafood kebab as well not to mention mussels i could go on.But like i say you cant please everyone its impossible but i garantee we give 100 percent. Thanks for your comments.

Con M  (27 July 2004)

Hello Trevor i can only say that you have got us wrong completly,The chicken strips we do for all our chicken strip dishes is fresh and sliced at 4pm 2 hours before we open we then spice and bread them up mate i would never by frozen rubbish for this restaurant like many of my fellow restaurant owners do.you are more than welcome to come and see whenever you like the preperation my team put into the food and how fresh it is.I would never deal with packet stuff im sorry you have got us wrong.mermaids is also used by very respected english tour companies and would never settle for 2nd best for the staff they have.Im sorry you didnt enjoy your night but the staff and i would be very pleased to offer you a free nights meal to try us again on your next visit.Being a very busy restaurant means we seel out of everything and re order fresh everyday i can say that a handfull of restaurants do this.

John S  (26 July 2004)

Hi Chris, the guy you refer too as Miri, I was always led to believe his name was PEDROS. Thats what I call him. My daughter calls him OY, he answers to that too. He's coming over to see me in Nov/Dec, will let you know when he arrives, could get together buddy. Hi, my little Albanian friend, if you get chance to read this.........PETE

Chris C  (26 July 2004)

Hi Lee!
Unless you`re going for more than 2 weeks mate you`re best shopping around for a package holiday, you`ll pay less than flight and accomodation separate.
The guy you`re thinking of I think is Miri who is the lad who shows people to their tables, and his wife Emma is the tall blonde girl, Con is the owner, and you can post any message for him on here as he does read this regularly, if you want to email him it`s piggwix@otenet.gr

Hope that helps!

Lee S  (26 July 2004)

hey chris i suspect i was there in plus soda when you were working there...great spot ..have you any good contacts for appartments to rent? may be cheaper than going via a tour operator, just get my own flight..have you done this?? what was the name of the manager at murmaids? is he the guy who is there from 9.30am until the end? short guy? speaks good english? have you an e-mail address for him? id like to just thanks him for making us so welcome there.cheers

Chris C  (24 July 2004)

superb post Patricia! In the days of the internet people and as most people have eyesight they can see for themselves before they go in if they think it`s too busy!

Patricia S  (23 July 2004)

The debate about mermaids goes on. I will just say this, we have gone to Zante for 9 years, we have gone to Mermaids for that long. We are now friends, I will admit that but I will say this you either like the food or you don't.That is fair enough, but don't doubt how fresh the food is. Go in for breakfast and you will see all the food being deliverd. Ask Con last thing at night if you can go into the kitchen and you will find all the food (not a lot) that is left over being dumped (or Emma and Miri takeing it to feed all the dogs on the way home) The only frozen stuff I have ever seen in 9 years is McCann Chips. I know the Yorkshire puddings are for real as I had to go over and show the Chef how to make them. Love it or hate it but don't knok it. If you want good food at value for money got to Mermaids. If you want a Greek taverna with all that goes with it, well go somewhere else. If you are not happy with the food, the service talk to Con, Miri or Emma. If you want your kids to be catered for go to Mermaids. Don't come home and complain if you have not complained over there. See you in September Con. Pat and Dave

John S  (23 July 2004)

Trevor, please go to Britanny in future. Leave the beautiful Greek islands to those people who enjoy them.

Trevor H  (23 July 2004)

Just looked at the pictures of the seafood platter....if the bulk of food and not taste is your thing --fair enough. Personally I have never seen so much battered and fried food.....go to Brittany and see how a sea food platter is done...personally the picture you uploaded would make me sick to eat.

Trevor H  (23 July 2004)

Hi Con

I was not talking about the fish and chips. I was referring to the pre bread crumbed chicken escalopes that you cut up and put in your wraps. I think they may have come from a factory in Athens. Why do you not use fresh whole sliced chicken breast like the way its meant to be???

Jenna M  (23 July 2004)

THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE BEST IN GREECE!! THE FIRST TIME WE WENT TO

HAD PIZZA (OH MY GOD) THERES NO WAY I COULD OF FINISHED THAT

IT WAS SO VALUE FOR MONEY BUT I ENDED UP TAKING IT BACK TO THE

APPARTMENT FOR LATER BUT THE ONLY THING THAT RUINED IT WAS THAT THEY

DROPPED THE TRAY WHEN CARRING OUR MEALS AND HAD TO RE-COOK EVERYTHING

BUT WE GOT DISCOUNT!! WE WENT BACK FOR A SECOND TIME AS WE DIDNT WANT

THEM THINKING WE WOULDNT GO BACK CAUSE THE FOOD WAS FANTASIC. THE

SECOND TIME I HAD CHICKEN KORMA IT WAS PERFECT JUST LIKE A TRUE

INDIAN!!!!!!!

WELL DONE FOR ALL THE EFFORTS GONE IT OUR MEALS THEY WERE THE BEST

ANYONE GOING TO KALAMAKI U NEED TO TRY THIS PLACE !!

CON UR A VERY LUCKLY MAN TO HAVE THIS PLACE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!

Carl C  (22 July 2004)

Just returned from two weeks at Dionysis and Tonia Studio's. Went to Mermaids twice, Breakfast was nuttin special, the evening meal was partly ruinbed by the Mozzies. Dont sit near the lights! Great Tan!!

Phil A  (22 July 2004)

We ate twice at Mermaids during our one week stay and thought it was fantastic. Not sure whether I was wise to sample the 21 euro Mixed Grill - I was 3 stone lighter before I went to Kalamaki!!!! It was great though, with loads of selection and really tasty meats.

I got a free lolly for finishing it too - bonus.

Chris C  (22 July 2004)

Agree with Con, all I can say though is this, as a customer of Mermaids for several years (and I eat there every night of my holiday), and having seen the kitchens, the fresh produce and the steaks and fish (the steaks being imported daily), and if you look at the picture of the Seafood Platter I uploaded, I`m amazed that people could seriously fault this restaurant. If they do have a grievance with their meal, and as Con said it`s impossible to get things perfect every time, if you have a problem see Con or one of the staff, it will be more than rectified.
If there was more space between tables there would be a lot of disappointed customers, and in terms of the service offered by a superb team and the consistency and quality compared to other places it is second to none (and over the years I`ve tried nearly all the restaurants in Kalamaki except the very newest).

In England I work as a Sales Exec for a food company, and wouldn`t touch a Brewers Fayre if you paid me!

This year I had amongst others

Blackened Swordfish Steak
Chicken Chardonnay
New York Wrapper
Steak
Mexicana Burgers
Jambalaya pasta

As I was working at night I couldn`t eat anything too heavy, believe me the portions of the above more than did me for a night`s work!

In the past I`ve had the Mixed Grills, Pizza, Sole, Vine leaves, Greek Salads, Steaks (T-Bone to Rump), you name it.
Seriously if anyone has any problems speak to Con or the staff, but the queues of repeat custom and the fact that it`s packed every night says it all really!

Con M  (22 July 2004)

EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO A OPINION LIKE TREVOR AND PETE LETS NOT RUI THIS WEBSITE BY ATTACKING EACH OTHER I KNOW MERMAIDS BETTER THAN ANYONE AND ALL I CAN SAY IS THE PEOPLE IN THERE WORK VERY HARD TO KEEP EVERYONE HAPPY THEY GIVE 100 PERCENT WE CANT ALL PLEASE EVERYONE ITS IMPOSSIBLE BUT THE SUCCESS OF MERMAIDS IS NOT OVER NIGHT ITS WORKING ALL THESE YEARS DAM HARD TO GET IT JUST RIGHT AS POSSIBLE FOR MOST PEOPLE WE CANT PLEASE EVERYONE AND IF WE SAID WE DID OR IN FACT ANY RESTAURANT SAID THEY DO THEY ARE LYEING.BUT I CAN PROMISE EVERYONE THAT ONCE YOU DO COME TO MERMAIDS YU WILL SEE WHY ITS IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN.THANKYOU TO ALL THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE TRIED MERMAIDS AND FOR COMING TO ZANTE IN WHOLE AND VISITING THIS GREAT ISLAND ALL WE CAN SAY WE TRY OUR BEST.PS THE FISH AND CHIPS ARE FROM THE UK NOT ATHENS.

Trevor H  (21 July 2004)

Thanks Eddie...We can see why people like this place----there are loads of Breweres Fayres busy on a Saturday nite---even more premade food. No accounting for taste!!!!

As for Mr Gladwin....I made valid comments about the food and backed it up with reasons for thinking it was not great. Much better than all the people who pass comments on how bloody fantastic it is but do not state one culinary reason why it was ie fresh mushrooms, freshly spun pizza, fresh fish etc etc

Mr Gladwin..I think you have just shown your lack of culinary knowledge...as for eating fish and chips at Skegness...never been to the place but at least most fish and chips are cooked from fresh ingredients and not out of some packet from a factory in Athens!!!!!

Chris C  (21 July 2004)

just for those who are going, have a look on the pictures!

Chris C  (21 July 2004)

ehup mate, been working DJ ing in town tonight, what a comedown,I`ll give you a bell Wednesday!

Jean & George  (20 July 2004)

We've just got back from Kalamaki and thought Mermaids was brilliant. I had the stuffed mushrooms was full for the rest of holiday. TOP! We eat here three times and can't recommend the place enough. The food was excellent! The service was also very good and Emma was very friendly as were all the staff. The head waiter worked his socks off. TOP

Erin G  (19 July 2004)

We had to wait to get a seat n when we got 1 it was rushed.
the food wasnt that nice eather.

Chris C  (19 July 2004)

Another 14 nights and 14 meals in Mermaids, tried a few of the new dishes (only 320-odd to try lol), fabulous food, brilliant staff and to all at Mermaids thanks for everything, I`m back in the land of reality (for a month or so till I get back), the best restaurant bar none in Zante!(and it`s busy because of the quality, to take tables out to make more room would disappoint a lot of customers who go back again and again!) Packed all night every night, and that speaks for itself, what other restaurant can boast that level of trade!

Matthew B  (14 July 2004)

Visited Mermaids last year and we weren't overly impressed. Returned to Kalamaki this year and tried it one more time. It was full and very busy and if you like a noisy, busy, bustling atmosphere, then great. Myself and my girlfriend prefer a more relaxed and quaint atmosphere. One waiter was literally running from the kitchen, to the tables, from the bar, to the tables! The food was good however. I ordered chicken which was beautifully cooked and very tasty. If you only want good food, come to Mermaids. If you want good food, relaxed atmosphere and that personal touch from your waiter/waitress, do not.

Eddie O  (12 July 2004)

OVER RATED or at best average.... and where do they get the world famous bit from?
i never heard of it before or since. and before mr pete (you are not allowed to have an oppinion ) gladwin posts some thing about my post let me say i dont eat fish n chips and i am not from skeggy. this sight is just for the kind of posts and oppinions that mr trevor hamilton posted so mr adolf gladwin if you can't face an honest oppinion don't read sights like this.

Richard A  (12 July 2004)

We went in on Greek night on Friday, pity we go home on Wednesday as we would have come again, our kids joined in with the Greek dancers right round the restaurant and into the club next door!
Excellent meals!

Pete G  (11 July 2004)

Sorry you and your family did'nt enjoy Mermaids. Your kind are never satisfied,go back to your fish and chips in Skegness. The meals are A1
at Mermaids folks and the staff are very friendly. This is the most popular restaurant in Kalamaki. My family has been going to Kalamaki since 1995 and have ate at Mermaids since the day it opened. Keep up the good work CON.

Trevor H  (06 July 2004)

Bit cramped.....good atmosphere and wide menu at pretty cheap prices.
Bit dissapointed with the food. Wife had a pizza---came from a packet like Goodfellas...not that they are bad but you would expect a proper one.

I had one of the chicken wraps...was made from preformed chicken escalopes chopped up and not even chicken breast---pretty poor.

Suppose they have about 400 items on the menu so you could not expect made food....it is all a bit premade in the factory and then reheated at Mermaids. Depends what you are used to I suppose but you could pay more and get less like some of the other restaruants!!!

Susan M  (04 July 2004)

my husband and i have just come back with our 2 year old from kalamaki, and we cannot stop raving about mermaids. Best place to eat around, huge portions, staff really friendly and very attentive with kids. Huge choice and really cheap for what you get. We went back several times, well worth a visit !!

Amanda R  (03 July 2004)

My daughter and I had a wonderful holiday in Kalamaki in May of this year and thoroughly recommend the place. We ate in Mermaids most evenings and were never disappointed. The service is the best we have experienced, never having to wait long for our meal. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. We will be going back for definate.

Kate   (30 June 2004)

We had breakfast here, there was a good choice on the menu and the prices were very good, unfortunately the food was luke warm and so was the cup of tea. The waiters were not very helpful and they did not seem very friendly, I don't think I would be in a hurry to go back to Mermaids.

Chris C  (29 June 2004)

well it`s nearly here again, I`ll see you all Monday night guys and gals, hmm, steak or chicken chardonnay?
Mind you it might be swordfish......

14 nights eating the best food on the island here I come!

Stephen V  (27 June 2004)

Definitely the best restaurant in Kalamaki, if not Zante. Prices are good, service is excellent, and the menu is, well, vast. Never had any problems with the food, and can't wait till I visit them again.

Sinead N  (22 June 2004)

We've just returned from our week in Kalamaki and every night we walked past Mermaids it was packed with customers. So we gave it a try and we found ourselves being ushered to a table that was practically on top of our neighbours tables. The tables were far to small for the dishes, glasses and condiments etc, and we were that close to other people's tables we could overhear their conversations. I thought that the food was average and reminded me of being back home in England. The plus side was that the price was reasonable, but I wasn't totally impressed by it. Before going to Kalamaki I read all the comments for the restaurants and was really disappointed in what we got in Mermaids. Don't get me wrong the service was excellent but the food was bland. There are better restaurants in Kalamaki.

Patricia S  (21 June 2004)

Well just come back from a month in Kalamaki. that's it untill September. Mermaids well as ever the best place to eat and drink and well what ever. Greek night stops the traffic. The new menu (Con stop it I cannot cope with anymore choices). I did learn a new trick this year, do as the Greeks do, instead of a main meal order 3 or 4 starters or as my husband and I did 6 or 7 and share. It is great fun and you get to try more diffrent things. The new bar was not ready but should be any time (PLUS SODA) plasma screens the job lot, well con does not do anything by halves. Oh and by the way Christine Eduart works in Mermaids but he is very much married, she is a doll, sorry girl but Yanni and Lully are single. See you all soonn Pat and Davexx

Chris H  (20 June 2004)

Amendment to last comment: Food =Excellent!!
Service=Excellent!!
Price=Excellent!!

Chris H  (20 June 2004)

Mermaids is one of the best,if not the best place to eat on the "strip"!! My brother-in-law's Bob and Anthony went for "The Monster Challenge" Steak with chips and mushrooms, I have NEVER seen such a big ones, I would love to see the cow it came from!!!! We ate there often, Pancakes for breakfast etc ab fab!!! We are coming back to Kalamaki again next May (05), there will be 11 of us this time!!!!

Ali B  (09 June 2004)

Just got back from 2 weeks in fabulous Zante and i can honestly say that no restaurant we ate in can touch Mermaids for its service, food and price. The entertainment on greek night was excellent(you must go early) and we will always remember how friendly all the staff were with the kids.Thank you,and hopefully see you again one day.

Sarah H  (01 June 2004)

Only had lunch here, but nonetheless it was of excellent quality and value. If you want to try the Greek night on Weds, make sure you go early. It gets extremley busy. We wanted to eat here but couldn't get in. The entertainment looked brill.

Tim R  (29 May 2004)

This place was packed out the first two weeks we where there when everyone else was empty amazing food and service a must too see.try the greek dishes kleftico was too die for.We tried other places god what a mistake we made and breakfast first class.

Daniel W  (28 May 2004)

everything about mermaids is great you will not find a better restaurant in kalamaki than here

Cardiacstar   (27 May 2004)

two weeks in Kalamaki, 7 dinners in Mermaids - you do the maths! Fab food, fab service, fab people. Just wish we'd discovered it on our previous holidays to Zante! And, but of useless trivia for you all: Graham Norton ate there in a few years ago! Famous!

Nicola   (26 May 2004)

Just come back from a week in Kalamaki,we tried a couple of restraunts on the first two nights then finally found Mermaids. It was definately the best!,the food was beautiful and the prices v.good open for breakfast too. The staff were brilliant and really cater well for children. I'd definately recommend it!

Chris C  (23 May 2004)

Got your message Pete and have texted Con to ask him, I know the new club next door Con has built is having plasma screens too!

Pete G  (23 May 2004)

ME AND MY FAMILY THINK MERMAIDS IS THE BEST PLACE TO EAT IN GREECE THE FOOD IS REALLY NICE, WE GOT TO KNOW THEM AND WE ARE NOW REALLY GOOD FRIENDS, AND ME AND MY FAMILY ARE GOING AWAY ON THE 17TH OF JUNE AND WE WILL PROBABLY GO TO THE MERMAIDS EVERY DAY FOR SOMETHING TO EAT. I WOULD RECOMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE

Christine M  (22 May 2004)

I just want to say, fab food and fab waiters!!!

If anyone can help me I'm looking for one waiter in particular. He goes by the name of Eduart and lives in Kalamaki.

Olda V  (11 May 2004)

Definitely one of the best restaurants in Kalamaki. We were very satisfied with food & service, good value for money.

Angie   (04 May 2004)

We ate here at least 10 evenings of the 14 we were in Zante, brilliant food, brilliant price, brilliant staff, brilliant wine

Breakfast was also fantastic although we only had it here once (the last day :-( unfortunately), had we discovered the brekkie before then we would have definately visited for breakfast more often.

Chris C  (20 April 2004)

11 weeks to go, get the chicken chardonnay on!! Hello again to all the great staff, Con, Adele and Yiannis and co! See you on the 5th July, coming on my own this year as the others are going to Spain (rather them than me lol)!

Grant K  (29 February 2004)

great meals always cant wait till july see you all at mermaids.

Gary S  (22 February 2004)

We have been to Kalamaki 4 times and eat regularly at Mermaids. Its a good, reliable place to eat. We found it a good place to go for breakfast. We are back in May, so no doubt a visit or two will happen

Lynne S  (14 February 2004)

We really enjoyed every meal we had at Mermaids, the food & service were the best so we ate there nearly ever night. The staff are very friendly and helpful and I'd recommend anyone visiting Kalamki to eat at Mermaids - will be going back this summer!

Sam G  (13 February 2004)

Don't know why so may people think Mermaids was great. We had a meal there when we were on holiday in October and sorry but we weren't impressed, it is very average and nothing special. The service wasn't great either and there was 1 waitress who wanted to rush you. Maybe it was a bad nite when we visited!

Chris C  (04 February 2004)

Happy New Year to all at Mermaids and Angels, just booked for my hol in July, coming alone this time.
Looking forward to great food as always, will be in Mermaids every night!
See you there!

Andy H  (02 February 2004)

good luck with your new bar,im sure it will be just as good.
cant wait to see u all in the summer, and get my hands on your menu again....so many tasty dishes to try.

Jon D  (21 January 2004)

Mermaids in my opinion wasn't all it cracked up to be. It was very average and it definately doesn't deserve the 10/10 scoring

Doreen H  (04 January 2004)

My husband and i just want to wish a very special and great year for all the staff at mermaids for making our holiday fantastic with your great smiles and great food.We are looking forward to seeing you all in 2004 please put a stuffed steak on the side for george.

Mandy P  (26 October 2003)

MERMAIDS EVEN ........... BRILL PLACE!!! LOVELY FOOD AND GREAT SERVICE...... YOU MUST GO THERE !!!!

Pat G  (23 October 2003)

The finest restaurant in Kalamaki, Con and the staff are very efficient, the location and atmosphere are second to none and the food is out of this world, I defy anybody to clear thier plate.
Well done you deserve all the praises that are heaped upon you

Barry P  (21 October 2003)

THANKYOU (CON ) SPEDDY AND LOVLEY WIFE, CON THANKYOU FOR HELPING ME WITH THE CRAZY MAN THAT KNOCKED ME OFF THE BIKE THE FOOD WAS FANTASTIC JUST LIKE LAST YEAR AND EVERYBODY THAT WE SENT TO MERMAIDS FROM OUR HOTEL OR JUST IN TALKING HAVE ALL SAID THE SAME AS US

Anja M  (20 October 2003)

Great food Great atmosphere They even had entertainment for you as well the kids played on the x.box,We played in the quiz overall this place wants all us brits to relax dine and have fun.We tried the traditional taverns plain bland they try to drag you in by the hair and mermaids was packed always like the moto is its simply the best and you will notice that.A tip try somewhere else nearby then try mermaids you will see why its packed.
Thanks for a great time to mermaids keep it up.

T +  (18 October 2003)

this is the finest diner on zakynthos. we have been enjoying the excellent service and quality food there over seven visits in five years. any adverse comments seen on this page arise from a minute minority of peeps who should not have been allowed to travel in the first place.

this is a big food and fun place to gox

Sarah H  (18 October 2003)

After being told that this was probably one of the best places on the island to eat we decided to try it out, what a disappointment, the food was bland, the waiters were not very nice and overall was very expensive. Would not go there again

Chris C  (17 October 2003)

As the season gets to a close can I thank one last time Con, Adele, Yiannis and all the staff for the great meals we had here this year, 21 nights, 21 meals and up to 12 of us going each night, no-one ever had the slightest problem with the meals, back now to microwave meals and Chinese till next year (I really SHOULD find a decent girl lol), there were too many great dishes we had to name them all but thanks to everyone, excellent food, quick and friendly service, PLEASE open a Mermaids here!!!!!!

Tracey P  (15 October 2003)

I ate here several times with my mum and daughter. The food was always wonderful. I can highly recomend the cooked breakfasts and the Prawn Sganaki is absolutly delicious. As for the staff they are all very friendly and always very welcoming and helpful, especially Miri otherwise known as "speedy". He always made us feel welcome and at home. I cant praise the Mermaid highly enough. We had great fun here. I can safely say that eating at the Mermaid was the absolute highlight of my holiday. Not only do they do great food at reasonable prices but they also have late night films and quize nights. In fact my thirteen year old daughter was thrilled to be the winner of the first prize.

Andrew S  (15 October 2003)

We ate here a number of times during our stay, there were 4 in our party and we had an asortment of meals from Garlic Bread to T Bone steaks, the platters are excelent value, believe me you won't need a starter. try the Monster Challenge stake if you dare. Great food, great price, great atmosphere, large portions, cheaper childrens menu and helpful friendly staff.

David N  (13 October 2003)

We ate at mermaides for 2 nights of the 7 we were on the island and found the food excellent. For the first night i had a sirloin steak which was cooked to perfection and the second i had ribs with the bbq sauce (yummie). Service was good with a smile and all waiters were very helpfull. Recomended to everyone *****

Phil C  (11 October 2003)

This place was fantastic. We when on friday night(Greek Night)it was packed. great food, great service, great show. A must for all who visit...

Catriona H  (10 October 2003)

My fiance and i ate here on three occations during our stay. They have the best vegetarian menu on the resort and i would recommend the vegetable tikka masala, huge and delicious. The breakfasts were also great and kept the hunger pains away to tea time. Dont forget to try the strawberries and ice gream, yummy.

Buellman   (01 October 2003)

We went there on our first night in Kalamaki, mostly due to the positive comments on here. I decided to put them to the the test, and ordered the T-Bone with peperred sauce. It turned up EXACTLY as I had ordered, (very well done), and the peppered sauce was blindin'.
It was that good, I had another on our last night!!

Only gripe was the waitresses could be a tad over-eager at times, asking if we were ready to order, after the menu's had only been opened around 10 seconds!

Lee B  (01 October 2003)

It was the first time i had been to Zante and went to mermaids every night for a meal, i had no complains what so ever about the meals i had while i was there nice and friendly staff, quick service and decent prices all around. no doubt i will be there again next year for a holiday so in the mean time keep up the good work. thanks!!

Shazza   (01 October 2003)

Very overrated. Yes they have a great choice of food in there, but it was nowhere near as nice as everyone said it would be. Don't appreciate being watched eating by one of the waiters either who then decided to have a laugh about it with one of his mates (sorry - is there something abnormal about eating with my mouth closed and not stuffing food in then!). Waiter service in general was ok but don't think they are particulary friendly in there. Think this place is run by the same person who runs Angels - what more can I say!! He was the one who recommended this place to us.

Chris C  (29 September 2003)

7 more nights and 7 meals in the best restuarant on the island, the busiest in Kalamaki as always, superb staff and plenty of new menu ideas too. T-Bone steak was massive, specially imported like all the steaks. Chicken chardonnay was fantastic (had that twice), just try it and see for yourselves. A massive thanks once again to Con,Adele, Yiannis and all the staff who do a fantastic job, roll on next year!

Linda J  (25 September 2003)

compliments to the chef, staff and mermaids management great place incredible food takes a miracle too beat you.

Tony T  (25 September 2003)

We stayed in Kalamaki from August 3rd to August 17th and ate at Mermaids on one occasion. Yes the restaurant was busy but does that make the place good?. The menu is extensive but takes forever to read. We waited for 20 mins for our drinks to arrive and a further 45 mins for our meal to arrive. When the meal eventually arrived, they brought our main course first!. We then waited a further 20 mins for our starter. Credit where it's due, the starter was quite nice. When our main course arrived for the second time, we noticed that it was the original main course they had taken away which they had kept warm.! We complained to a waiter (no apology) and waited another 25 mins for a replacement meal. Whilst we were waiting for our meal to arrive, two huge cinema screens came on with a film which had foul language despite families and kids present!
We would certainly not recommend this resaurant as the whole experience was a let down. If you prefer a nice resaurant with nice food and atmosphere, don't go to Mermaids as there are plenty of others in the resort. If however you prefer waiting a long time for overpriced food "a la McDonalds" then this is the place for you! Bon Appetite.....NOT!!

Sam B  (24 September 2003)

best in kalamaki by far the place is packed everynight, too bad there wasent another mermaids further down as the rest of the resturants would really be in bigger trouble we where 6 in the group and found the food and presentation too be fantasic.well done.

Joanne E  (23 September 2003)

WE ATE HERE ONCE, THAT WAS ENOUGH, THE PLATES WERE DIRTY, THE FOOD POORLY PRESENTED ON A BIG PLATE TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU GOT A LOT, AND ONE CHILD THREW  UP ALL NIGHT, THE OTHER HAD THE RUNS FOR THE REST OF OUR HOLIDAY.

Brod J  (23 September 2003)

The best place we ate good food good service prices a little more than others but worth it. good with kids recomend it

Liz J  (19 September 2003)

Well this place all depends on what you expect from a dining experience. It's certainly not a place to go for a quiet meal with friends or a partner, it's more of a large party of people where your noise won't be disturbing to other diners. The menu is big, the TV is big, the service is er 'patchy' to say the least, maybe they need to sort out the bar staff as drinks seem to be the main problem according to this page, we had to ask 3 times for our drink order, by which time we were half way through our main course. Food was OK, served on big plates, nothing stood out as "WOW love this dish" and we all had something different, the there is a large selection but maybe too large to retain high standards of all meals. I'm not one for skimping on money for food, we have eaten in some of the 'best restaurants' but for the quality of the food, service and place it was over priced. Took forever to get our bill, overall I wasn't impressed, sorry.

Kev H  (15 September 2003)

They have the biggest menu. It is all good. It is always packed. It is more expensive than other nearby restaurants. Because it is so busy the service is a little slow, I ordered a drink to have with my main course and got it with my dessert! Evening was marred when the heavens opened and customers from outside had to move inside which made it a bit of a squeeze. Recommend trying food off the "specials" board. Generally a bit different and reasonably priced compared with the standard menu. The "Loaded Chicken" was a bit gorgeous!

Lisa J  (14 September 2003)

Judging from the queues outside every time we walked past Mermaids, it is the most popular places to eat in Kalamaki. This is a shame because it is one of the most commercial and non-typical Greek restaurants in the resort. We decided to give it a go and ate there on one night. I have to admit that the atmosphere was good and the waiters were friendly but extremely busy. The menu choice is enormous, if you prefer to eat English food whilst you are away, then this is the place for you, but they did also do Greek dishes as well. This is also a good choice for families with small children, their children's menu was good. Overall, I would say that Mermaid's does the job if you want to feel like you are still at home in England but ith a slightly Greek twist.

Sue A  (12 September 2003)

Wicked chocolate fudge cake..

Gail H  (08 September 2003)

You can find every kind of restaurant. We spend most of our holiday evenings in restaurants rather than bars and have a meal with drinks so we liked the traditional taverna type restaurants and we have spent from €6 - €12 each for a meal again it depends on where you eat and what type of food you like. My problem is I like it all so had to try them all.

One of the ones that everyone knows about, had a three evening meals here. First meal brilliant, second meal we had to a wait a few minutes for a table because they were busy but well worth it third meal had same as second visit because I enjoyed it that much, but it was also the night of the England match and they have had it showing on their big screens. I think they were over run with customers and although we had gone after the match had finished, the meal wasn’t a patch on what it should have been and I didn’t really enjoy it. I think if they are busy they rush things and don’t pay attention to what they are doing so much.

Becky A  (01 September 2003)

The souvlaki Platter Rocks - need I say any more!!!!]

Charo D  (01 September 2003)

Mermaids is an excellent place to eat in Kalamaki. It does get busy, but that's because it's so popular. You need to get there about 7pm. My boyfriend and I ate here more than once. It has a lot of different dishes to choose from. The portions aren't massive, but this means you can have three courses and you don't waste any. I highly reccommend this restaurant to everyone who goes to Kalamaki.

Brian W  (27 August 2003)

Tried it once. That was enough. Food was very average, and the service very poor, even though we ate early to avoid the "rush".

Emma J  (25 August 2003)

Fantastic night. Brilliant food and more friendly waiters. 1 of our best meals. Quiz night is a laugh. Gorgeous meal and lovely place but 1 warning the souvlaki is salty!!

John   (24 August 2003)

After 2 weeks and trying many places to eat this place had a varied menu and reasonable prices.Nice one!

Louisa M  (22 August 2003)

The plates even amazed my husband and i gorgeous food and great presentation more mermaids resturants would be my only complaint open one in the uk.Great internet service as well.

Margaret B  (19 August 2003)

I had a meal here in 2001 and that was fabulous because it was my very first time in Kalamaki, on Zante island. This meal was followed by a very terrific display of Traditional Greek Dancing which I really enjoyed getting up and joining in the fun! Last year, no Greek dancing - just a huge T.V. and the food not as good. This year in June the food was terrible I order a veg stir fry and it came to me in the Pan!! My sweet and special coffee never arrived and on the huge t.v. screen was the bloody English News!! How much more downhill can Mermaids go? However both my daughter seem to think the food is good and other people must like it because it is always busy. I won't be going there again.

Gill   (17 August 2003)

We ate here nearly every night great food, great prices and what a choice.
The portion sizes were huge we never made it to dessert as we were so full up.
Excellent

Joe C  (12 August 2003)

Just used mermaids internet services fast and cheap. Now that i have just had a meal which was lamb hot pot greek style im relaxing emailing my friends the weather is ace.I just like too say if mc donalds was this tasty there would be no more resturants left they would go out of business and this is from a person who knows how too eat.Bottom line this place is always packed superb food with a menu that has nothing too do with the boring resturants close by.

Paul D  (12 August 2003)

We only ever tried Mermaids for breakfast, but I must say the food was always well cooked and the variety for breakfast was excellent. There was only one reason we never tried Mermaids in the evenings and that was because they was always too busy. We also tried a few other places for breakfast but they couldn't match the variety and prices of Mermaids.

Sophie L  (11 August 2003)

We thought Mermaids was really nice. The service was great and the food was delicious.
The plates would be overflowing with food and they were big plates. The chicken there is lovely, and my brothers and sister loved it.Great value for money and we got a discount at Angels. The service was quick and the menu was vast.

Tracy B  (10 August 2003)

We have been to zante four times and all I will say is MERMAIDS IS MACDONALDS. If I had wanted this kind of food I would have gone to a cafe in Blackpool. I have just read some of the previous comments, and the people who get very defensive of Mermaids sound like they are well suited to eat there every night. It's obvious that they will not like the greek tavernas.
Prehaps tourists like these are partly responsible for why Zante is becoming sadly so commercialised now.

Vicky P  (06 August 2003)

the food was amazing, everyone should definetly go, its not to be missed

Linden J  (04 August 2003)

I think a little overrated but nice nonetheless. Was very busy, although the waiters managed to pull together an extra table for our party of 5. Extensive menu so it took ages for us to decide and I have to say the desserts are yummy yum! People were queuing outside so we felt a little rushed, although good, I wouldnt queue as there are nicer restaurants on the island such as Escapes and Mikaelos. Worth a try oh and they do nice breakfasts too!

Lucy C  (04 August 2003)

simply excellent.

Lee R  (02 August 2003)

Went to Mermaids on first night of Holiday, and that will be the last time! long wait, food overcooked, no room to move and was full of screaming kids, if you are a couple and want a quiet meal, AVOID!
Tesoro,Stanis or Parthenon were excellent :)

Phil S  (30 July 2003)

If you have kids then Mermaids is the best place to go.
Good staff, good menu, good food.

Chris C  (29 July 2003)

Hi to the Guildford girls, you were a good laugh despite our noisy antics, bet you had a chuckle when you saw our plane still on the runway when you took off!!! We were delayed 24 hours due to computer failure lol!!! Hope you got back OK, shame we didn`t actually meet up properly till the penultimate night!

Meg G  (29 July 2003)

The Mermaid was excellant, the staff were friendly, the food was wonderfull and it is definatly worth a small wait. Had a great 2 weeks in Zante apart from our noisey neighbours! only joking chesterfield boys!

Sandra P  (28 July 2003)

Great food and service. Well worth a visit

Stevie F  (28 July 2003)

Went to Mermaids EVERY night of the holiday (9th July - 23rd) and the food was excellent as always.

Chicken Chardonnay, Chicken Orleans being superb dishes. You can't really go wrong though, great service and superb value for the portions.

DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE!

Brian T  (26 July 2003)

We visited Mermaids on a Friday night - 'Greek night' and just managed to get a table before the rush.
We were a party of 6, but the staff soon gave us a table in the position we preferred, a nice touch!
Most of tried the food on the special menu, and have to say it was delicious. We ate and drank and enjoyed the greek dancers, plate smashing etc., then somehow got caught up in the 'conga' as it wound around the tables, into the street etc., and ended up doing the fire dance!
An enjoyable evening, but when we tried to return another evening there were queues, so no further experiences on a 'quiet' night.

Karen P  (25 July 2003)

Five years ago when we went, I would agree that Mermaids was the best in Kalamaki. However, having just returned (24/07/03) things have definitely changed. The food is okay and the staff are okay. The place is far too commercialised. Get there after 9.00 pm and you have to wait for a table. To be honest it is really over-rated. There are much nicer tavernas/restaurants in Kalamaki such as Escape and Taverna Merlis.

Chris C  (24 July 2003)

I`ll try again as my last post `vanished`. Just returned into the English rain after a great 14 days in kalamaki, ate every night in Mermaids and took loads of others up there too who went back again and again. Not one person had any complaint, every meal was superb. I dread to think what I weigh now!!!!
Seriously, the best place on the island by far, great staff, and a big thanks to Con, Adele, Yiannis and all the staff for making it a great holiday for us all!

See you in September!

Chris C  (24 July 2003)

Just got back (and very depressed about that) after 14 days yet again, and once again 14 meals in Mermaids. Fantastic food, great staff, never one bad meal. We took between 3 and 9 people there on different nights and not one problem, everyone liked it. Can`t say any more than that!!!

Hi to Con,Adele,Yiannis and all the staff, see you all in September!

Ciara D  (19 July 2003)

Mermaids has to be one of the best restaurants I've ever eaten in on holiday. By far the best in definitely Kalamaki, probably Zakynthos and possibly the best out of all European 'holiday resorts'. Thanks Mermaids for making a fantastic holiday even better.

Nicola L  (18 July 2003)

Me, my sister and a friend have just come back from Kalamaki (for the 5th time), and had never been to Mermaids before this holiday. We found the food absolutely gorgeous and decided to save it until our last night and again the food was up to scratch- top notch!

Kate R  (18 July 2003)

Mermaids was by far the best place to eat in Kalamaki. During my week long holiday (got back last night) my friend and I ate there 4 times. Mermaids is very impressive, great food, great atmosphere and even better staff. The food was amazing (I would highly recommend the Chicken Chardonay - mmm, mmm, mmm! And if your well hard and I mean well hard you should try the mixed grill - so big it isn't for the faint-hearted! Thank you to all the Mermaids staff for making our holiday a memorable one.

Marc S  (15 July 2003)

Brilliant Fish and Chips, eh con. Remember. Alan & Janet. Still waiting for t-shirt and cup

Barry H  (14 July 2003)

We kept the "famous mermaids" for our last night in a two week break, and possibly caught the place on a bad night. One of the waiters who came to take our order looked a mess, he then went on to say he hadnt slept for 48 hrs because he had been partying.
He took an order for 2 starters and 2 kids meals to be served together and then for mine and my partners main course for after so the kids were not waiting. He also took a drinks order as we were not offered drinks by him as we were viewing the menu. The starters and the kids meals came but no drinks which we had to remind him of.
Then unbelievably we waited an hour from our starters and still there was no main course by which time the kids were obviously becoming restless, i had asked "manuel" the waiter another twice for drinks which never came at all and i had to ask another waiter which resulted in us finally getting our drinks. My patience had gone by the time the hour was up and i asked for my bill and to cancel my main course order. All of a sudden we were then fussed over, the head waiter came over and i said i understanded they were busy but that it was not on and to his credit he was very apologetic and explained some of the grills had broken down and they were behind, he offered me if i stayed all my drinks for free and a bottle of the finest white on the menu which i accepted and within 5 mins our food was there.I found my steak to be very tasty and the sauce was superb, however my partner thought her chicken was only average but in the circumstances i think most people would have been a bit disappointed. If the head waiter didnt do what he did i think the whole of my mermaids experience would of been a disaster.

Skater B  (13 July 2003)

amazing food staff price. i had the outback brekkie 6 days on the trot, good for the big men like me. loving the bacon and fried bread there! brekfast staff are the best. evening meals the meat lovers pizza is a must have! cya next year guys. (they get some real fine ladies in there too thanks to miri haulin them in!)

The S  (11 July 2003)

I have just arrived back from Kalamaki and one of the highlights of the holiday was not only skateboarding but having meals at Mermaids because the food is excellent and the price is excellent and most of all the staff are great. We will hopefully see you again next year.

John B  (08 July 2003)

just too note mermaids has its own internet cafe now and im the first too use it.
Putting silly comments on i will not all i can say the place is the bullocks try elsewhere no comparison.
Great internet as well and cheap.

Matthew B  (06 July 2003)

Recently returned from Kalamaki after spending a week with my girlfriend. Got to say that we were disappointed with Mermaids, having read all the positive comments on this site. I'm not saying the place was bad, just not as good as expected. Food was average and it certainly isn't the place to go to enjoy a quiet, relaxing meal, as they did quizzes and showed movies whilst dining. Also there is one particular waiter (looks like an extra from The Addams Family) who is particularly unhelpful.

Lucy C  (29 June 2003)

I will see you in july chris for a great time in mermaids and angels.

J H  (27 June 2003)

Visited mermaids on our first holiday to Kalamaki. It was OK. Nothing particularly wrong with the food or service, more the atmosphere, very busy and loud, sort of, whats the word...commercial(?) I wouldn't say don't go there, but I wouldn't put it in my top 5. We ate a variety of meals between us which ranged between ok and good, and were served relatively quickly (holiday pace I call it! Which I was permanently on!!). Prices aren't the best on the island for what you get. Overall, average.

Patricia S  (23 June 2003)

Well here I am again, just go back from a week in Zakynthos. Right before we go any further my email address is patriciasenior@al.com. yes I admit to being friends with the owners Con and Adele and most of the staff. The reason is we have been going so long and that is the type of people they are. I agree with all of you who say you are entitled to your opinion, and your right to state it. I agree that this site is getting out of hand with it's NAAA NAAA NA NA NAAAA NA comments. So I will just say this. We have just spent a week out there. We came back from Corfu and as I have been off work very ill an will be going back to the job soo, my husband tret me to a week with our friends. Yes we did eat in the Mermaids every night but one, but in the past 5 years we have eaten in many other restraunts in Kalamaki and other resorts. We had good service, and as we had seen so many bad reports about bad service we kept or eyes open to see what the problem was. I tnink one thing might be, the staff in there all have diffrent job. The waiting staff with very good English, (or are English) take the food orders, the least experience staff take orders for the drinks, the ones with very little English clear and set up tables. So some people think they are being ignored when the thing is the waiter cannot help them, due to lack of Enlish, Swedish, German etc. We did hear customers asking for things not on the menu (and the knockers will admit at least it is a big menu)We only order Greek dishes, the cook this year is Demitri, I am sure he does adapt the reciepies to the English taste. But having said that, we do visit other Greek islands (not just Corfu either) and we do drive out to little tavernes, and we do not find that much difference. On the Friday. which is the Greek Night, and is very good fun. When it was over we had a drink with the group who we found were all teachers, they are trying to keep the traditions alive but don't mind entertaining the touists. The dances are traditional but then they entertain as well. If you go there and have a bad meal, service or any other bad experience and complain (at the time) and get no redress yes post your views. I do not say the Mermaids is for everyone. But The staff love children, will try to make you welcome, will do there best to give you a good night. Give them a chance, unless you are like the couple who sat next to us one night looked at the menu for 20 mins then asked for 2 items not on the menu, then asked if the swordfish was the whole fish, it was not just me and my hubby who were laughing at that. So in short if you do not like Mermaids for what ever reason and you have told them at the time what your problem is tell everyone. If like us you like Memaids tell us on this site, but let us all grow up and be honest, I do not think anyone should be afaid to go there, all the Greek Islands are down on visitor this year and MERMAIDS was the only place full every night, and mostlby people going back from the years before or even the night before. rest my case. Oh and by the way we are going back to Zakynthos and the Mermaids for 2 weeks in September. So Con be warned get the UKE ready for the washing machine and the the TV and Elliot get the beef stifardo on now. Pat and Dave

Sue M  (23 June 2003)

Its just that The webmaster should have a system where you are allowed one entry per restaurant etc.

Bob W  (23 June 2003)

After reading all the rave reviews we were looking forward to trying Mermaids. We went on the night when we didn't have the kids (thanks to grandparents) but were very disappointed. Food OK - nothing special, but the service was awful.

Kathryn W  (23 June 2003)

Mermaids was recommended to us as THE place to eat so we tried it out. It was fine, good meals (slightly small portions0, busy and noisy with the large screen TV blaring football in the background. It was a decent price for a good hot meal, but we soon returned to Tesoros.

Jim D  (22 June 2003)

If some of these comments were worthy of a reply at all then i`d bother...!!!! But it`s a sad state of affairs when people start gettin slated for their use of the English language. What`s the problem with people when they can`t accept a bad review of somewhere they like...???? And as for People havin nothing better to do than comment on these sites...!!!! Well lets all start looking a little closer to home first......!!!! I do agree about the webmaster gettin a grip with these problems but then again we should all be grown up enough to not get drawn into these arguments in the first place...!!! (Sorry about any spelling/grammer mistakes)

Sarah B  (22 June 2003)

Good service, staff friendly and willing to help. Food good, always busy - says it all!!

C C  (20 June 2003)

Sue Masterman aka Terry Smith, Tony Parsons, Simon Arkanou, Hannah Pinks, Denise Webber, Sally Arkanou, interesting!

Even more interesting - the appalling level of the written English language????

Jim D  (20 June 2003)

Hi all, Just got back from Zante this week. After seeing all the rave reviews (well they were before we went) we decided to go to the world famous Mermaids. And to be quite honest i`ve had to come back on to this site to re-read them because i can`t believe how anyone can say this place is the ducks nuts....!!!!
The food was terrible, the service shocking (that`s being polite, cos i can`t put down what i really think)and the less said about the staff the better....!!
While we were there we had a great holiday and will be going back just as soon as we can get time off from work (that`s Zante not Mermaids). I think it`s just a shame that people can`t come onto these sites to leave their own honest opions without having to suffer abuse aimed at themselves or their "dog women". (you know who you are..!!!). If you disagree with someone else`s reviews then fine but is there really any need for the name calling because i for one left that kind of behaviour behind at nursery school.

Chris C  (18 June 2003)

Steve Winterton, aka Tony Barker and Karen Winterton, interesting.

Trish W  (18 June 2003)

God when will this load of crap stop you are all making this site pathetic grow up children.

Lesley B  (18 June 2003)

ate here a few times, mostly breakfast which is very good, evening meals are huge and value for money. why are people slagging people off on here?, surely its all about personal opinions and experiences?.we like mermaids, not for the authentic taverna experience, but we do like it, the quiz is good, we won again, will see you later in the year,

Sue M  (18 June 2003)

Dont worry fg i have been coming too greece for many years and regonise good food and how much it has changed over the years but dont just take my word for it.It seems all the great chefs of the world have come on here so strange they have nothing else too do strange.

F G  (18 June 2003)

Now Sue, we know you like Mermaids but you don't have to make things up. You clearly haven't tried all of the resturant/tavernas in Zante, you spend the majority of your time in Mermaids!! I find it hard to believe that someone who throws insults around like a five year old when she doesn't like what she hears is suddenly the knowledge of all things Cultural and Greek - can you? Many of us look past the aesthetic features of these resturants. Authentism, I found, was in the style of cooking, the ingrediants, food and the atmosphere. I really don't need lessons is authentism from someone who knows nothing about what we have seen and done, or whose world knowledge is showing little more than Zante and Mermaids, I'm sure Josh Taylor doesn't either, like he said it's a big world out there you guys should try it sometime!!!!!

Tony B  (17 June 2003)

HAVING JUST RETURNED FROM KALAMAKI I CANNOT COMPREHEND THE POSITIVE COMMENTS POSTED ON THIS SITE!WE WENT 2 MERMAIDS TWICE DURING OUR STAY ,THE FIRST TIME ALL WAS GOING WELL UNTIL EVERYONE IN OUR PARTY RECEIVED THEIR MEALS AT DIFFERENT TIMES,2MEALS HAD 2 BE SENT BACK ONE FRAZZLED,THE OTHER STILL CLUCKING ALMOST.SECOND VISIT WE GAVE THEM A SECOND CHANCE BUT THIS FAIRED NO BETTER THE STAFF WERE RUDE HAVING RECOGNISED US FROM OUR FIRST VISIT.SOME OF THE COMMENTEERS NARROW MINDEDNESS IS PATHETIC WHO'S BOTHERED WHERE ANY ONE COME'S FROM,LET PEOPLE HAVE THEIR COMMENT AS THIS IS WHAT THIS OPINION PAGE IS FOR.STOP ACTING LIKE SCHOOL BULLIES AND SIT ON YOUR FINGERS WHEN READING THIS PAGE AND GIVE SOMEONE ELSE A CHANCE!

Sue M  (17 June 2003)

Zakinthos and greece itself has started too change allot you wont find authentic greek cooking from any tavern in kalamaki, speaking too allot of locals they told me people have changed there style of cooking just too please the english so if you josh thinks that wherever you went too had authentic cooking you are very wrong.
go too the mountains in volimes and see the old taverns there now that is authentic now if you think by planting a couple of olive trees a colum from the acropolis and greek waiters sorry albanian waiters with bow ties is greece you are a bigger idiot than i thought.
Greece as we knew it a long time ago is not and as for greek food mermaids has 100s of dishes too try as well sorry not the olive tree or bow tie.

Josh T  (17 June 2003)

Childish - pot - calling - kettle???? I think we exceeded childish a VERY long time ago when WE weren't allowed to leave our opinions in peace, Sue, Chris, Patricia and Stevie F!! It's a BIG old world out there matey, with many different people, tastes and opinions. I have no jealousness towards Mermaids - far from it I couldn't give a t*ss. When I found this website I was pleased as I could look at Kalamaki and do a little research before I went, I was grateful that there was a site that INDEPENDENT people could visit and give reviews, after they have been. Yes I think Mermaids nothing more than a chain, over loaded, over priced and quite frankly as far from as authentic Greece as the Rose and Crown over the road. It is ashame that people need to come on here to be rude and make judgements on people whom they have never meet, just because they don't like Mermaids!!!! Or judge them on where they are from, I think that demonstrates the mentality here, if I am from London, New York, Manchester or Scotland does that mean I am not free to have an opinion?? The beauty of a website designed for tourists/travellers is to give advice etc so what if you don't agree with someone, that is their right - or maybe you haven't quite grabbed that concept yet?

This isn't a Mermaids chat forum on the fan club site it is a REVIEW page and I cannot understand why you lot seem to take a bad review or Mermaids personally? I don't actually care either as my review is there in black and white along with many others who agree with it. I think its all down to what you want from a holiday if a restaurant with a menu with 300 choices, Large TV, quiz night, films, LARGE plates/portions (u decide), English teenagers playing waiters, bright neon signs then Mermaids IS the place for you. If, like us, you wanted something a little more laid back, authentic Greece, quieter, a bit more 'rural' than a big city smoke restaurant then go for one of the many tavernas the Greeks are so proud of, it really is as simple as that!!

So I will go now, as I really don't have the time, or the inclination to continue this idiotic behaviour (wait for childish comments from above mentioned people, saying I work somewhere else, good riddance and all the other things they will type). Hope those of you visiting mermaids had a better experience than we did, and those of you who didn't - be prepared for the juvenile onslaught that will follow from the mermaids share holders!!!!

Stevie F  (16 June 2003)

So now its becoming childish. In my opinion (and in the opinion of everyone i have spoken to who has ever visted this place) it is superb.

Seems there are some jealous folks on here who can't handle it being the superior restuarant! And whats worse...everyone recognises it as this even if you want to think different in your fantasy worlds!

To compare it with MaHubbards is just being childish. Isn't MaHubbards only 'local' around Mansfield way? that might explain the 'sad Spireites' comment...for those who don't know MaHubbards is 'reet posh' for the locals and they wine and dine their local dog-wimin for £6 for 2 on a regular basis. No one from town bothers unless they are skint / bored or have never been before.

Mermaids isn't in a decaying suburb in North Nottinghamshire either!
So see you all in July, we'll will be frequenting Mermaids...as we recognise quality when we see it...this will be my 3rd visit in the last 9 months to zante so i know what i'm on about too!

Terry F  (14 June 2003)

Just had a great meal at mermaids massive portions had the lamb kleftico and wife had the greek style lemon chicken with garlic roasts,I give them 10 out of 10 very good service great atmosphere even though i lost at quiz get them next time.

Laura H  (13 June 2003)

for gods sake give it a rest from all im sure the webmaster has seen this and better do something about it this is got stupid and it ruins the site wake up webmaster.

Steve W  (13 June 2003)

I CAN ONLY AGREE WITH EMMA AND JOSH AND NOT FORGETING MR FARMER! THE UNBIASED OPINION FROM THE SAD SPIRETES AND STROPPY SUE (ONLY JOKIN) IS NOTHING SHORT OF GREAT ENTERTAINMENT,MY FAMILY AND I HAD A GREAT HOLIDAY BUT WAS TARNISHED, BY A VISIT TO THE WORLD FAMOUS MERMAIDS (NOT) U CANT KEEP ATTACKIN EVERY TOM,DICK AND HARRY 4 LEAVIN A BAD REVIEW , LEARN 2 EXCEPT PEOPLE'S DIFFERENT OPINION'S. AND GET ON WITH YOUR MERMAID LOVIN LIVES,U ALL NEED A GOOD HOLIDAY TO CHILL OUT !! THANK U ALL FOR KEEPIN ME ENTERTAINED! BON VOYAGE

Emma M  (13 June 2003)

Oh for god sakes.... how come if you want to give your less than GREAT review of Mermaids then you work at another resturant in Kalamaki but if you are shouting from the roof tops about it's OK...hypocrites!! I do not work for another resturant as I am sure the others do not either, nor do we post multiple entries under different names (see comments made by link on some!!)The Chesterfield Lads, Sue, etc Learn to give your review and leave it instead on inciting debates to which you abuse and insult those that don't agree with you. I will not comment further on Mermaids I have given my review but the postings on here from certain people are too many i.e. Chris and Sue, why argue, people just didn't enjoy it and are allowed to say so, its not your job to change their minds, if anyones acting like they work for a certain outlet in Kalamaki it's you two.
Over and out!!!!!!

Stevie F  (12 June 2003)

Hmm, having visted Zante (sept last year, May this year) and i am going again in July, I'll say that i'll eat EVERY meal of my holiday in Mermaids.

Its by far the best place for value and quality on the entire island. Don't get me wrong, there are other good eateries but the staff were excellent and the food was never a let down.

Take that as you will, but i agree 110% with Chris C. Seems the other lad probably works for the local restaurant or just pure enjoys arguements for the sake of it.

The best thing to do is to try the place...if you don't like it, then eat elsewhere...but i don't think the restuarant always has custom for no reason!

food for thought?

See you in July.

I CANNOT BELEIVE SOME OF THE COMMENTS COMING FROM CERTAIN PEOPLE IN FAVOUR OF MERMAIDS, THIS PAGE IS DESIGNED FOR EVERYONE TO LEAVE AN OPINION ON,,,WHETHER IT BE GOOD OR BAD ,MY EXPERIENCE OF MERMAIDS WAS A DREADFUL MEAL,BAD SERVICE AND A FEELING OF BEING RUSHED!!OBVIOUSLEY MY COMMENTS WILL OFFEND CHRIS AND SUE(MAJOR SHARE HOLDERS) BUT I AM ENTITLED TO MY OWN OPINION AS EVERYONE ELSE IS.I CHOSE TO GO TO KALAMAKI BECAUSE I LOVE GREECE AND LOVE NOTHING MORE THAN TO TRY DIFFERENT GREEK DISHES IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT GREEK RESTAURANTS!!I WILL BE RETURNING VERY SOON TO KALAMAKI BUT WONT BE GOING BACK TO MERMAIDS/MA HUBBARDS AS I PREFER NOT TO EAT IN A FAST FOOD OUTLET EVERY NIGHT.FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD!!!!!SO NER NER NER NER NER NER CHRIS AND SUE KEEP YOUR DUMMIES IN

Emma M  (12 June 2003)

After all the rave reviews we ate here.... We found it distinctly average. It has a large selection, maybe too large (if you know what I mean) Our meals were ok but nothing spectacular, tried traditional greek dishes, afraid not as authentic or tasty as we had at some of the tavernas in Kalamaki and Zante Town. Large Selection, Large (noisy)crowd, Large TV, average food, average value for money and average to poor service. I think maybe the euro signs are blinding Mermaids as it seems to me that quality and service is on the decline for a pack in and stack em high attitude! Sorry :-)

Richard F  (12 June 2003)

Well I'm glad we've all ended up as friends.

Steve C  (11 June 2003)

we arrived back at gatwick on tuesday 10th june & the only thing that i can say about mermaids is i wish i had tried it before the food was great the staff were very good at their jobs & as for the the choice it takes you longer to decide what to have then it doe's to eat it thanks to con & the gang cheers d.j steve & wendy

Chris C  (11 June 2003)

I`ll leave this with one comment. I`ve been going to Kalamaki for 5 years, this will be my 6th holiday there. To eat in the same place every night in my last 2 holidays, which a lot of other people do also, says something about that particular place. Never eaten burger or English food there either, so get your facts right matey. I`m friends with quite a few people in greece but I don`t drink in their bars every night, to me quality and service is all important.
I`ll close things at that, anyone got a problem about it my email is printed above!

John B  (11 June 2003)

Everyone on here has gone too war over mermaids everyone is entitled there opinion offcourse, but i can honestly say i have tried allot of the places here and i tell you what since i live here now and have opened a bar in laganas i used too use mermaids lots,We came again and go very often We know for a fact on the island this place has the best name im very fussy about my food the people in this place not other places once they see something wrong they quickly make up for it and apologise talking too kostas the owner the average ammount of meals he serves per night is over 350 more than double of his nearest rivals which i found where serving cheap and nasty food.
Yes you all have a opinion and i respect that but this place is head and shoulders abve the rest.
Well i wish all you people a great time here and just enjoy.

Josh T  (11 June 2003)

Sorry, Chris Chadwick, not Chris Craig!!

I certainly am from nowhere near Blackpool Mr!! People who have reviewed Mermaids badly on this page obviously did not have a good experience duh!! Issues were raised at the time and not dealt with in a satifactory way. As I said previously, I would like to eat with people who appreciate other peoples tastes and freedom of choice, and with those who do not form opinions on people because they didn't like their friends place!!. Mermaids is not a traditional GREEK taverna, for those of you who have may not notice it is a CHAIN and for those less adventureous and boring brits yeah it would be a great resturant but for those us who prefer to eat in the smaller, traditional and quite frankly, better resturants in Kalamaki we luckly have the freedom to choose, and not live under the little hitlers that seem to patrol this page as they have nothing better to, oh except for the few weeks when they go to the smae holiday destination everytime!! Chris, Patricia, Sue - stick to your harvester/hungry horse or your as you say 'your great freinds resturant Mermaids. The rest of us who actually enjoy trying new things and experiencing Greece for Greece will be slightly more adventureous. As for you comments on here about staying at home, I think you'll find the majority of people who didn't like Mermaids, was exactly for the reason that is was SO ENGLISH!!

Josh T  (10 June 2003)

Was about to place a review for Mermaids here, wasn’t going to be a good’un either but have started to see a real split in the calibre of people who love mermaids and those that don’t. What do you people want - a free meal from Mermaid staff or something? All of these personally abusive and rude comments appear to come from people who consider themselves friends with the owner or people at Mermaids, maybe this explains why you have such an amazing time? Those who have visited independently seem to have a rather different opinion. Secondly have you tried any of the other restaurants on the islands at all? I gave Mermaids 3 attempts in my 2 week stay and all times they failed. Point Break and Mustang Saloon did the best selection on fresh breakfast’s going, not just a fry up. Paris Taverna, Mikelos, and Lambros are all stunning places for an evening meal.

Quite frankly I would gladly chose not to eat with the people who have attacked those who reviewed Mermaids less favourable anyway. You stick to your part and the rest of us will visit Greece. You’d think once you lot had torn yourselves away from you deep fat fryers for 2 weeks, you’d drop your union jack towel off at the hotel and try something new. The only Brits on here causing themselves a bad name are Sue Masterson, Chris Craig and all those others who don’t seem to think people are allowed their opinions. This is a review page, for a post analysis (post meaning after the event – for those that don’t know) thus meaning people express opinions on their return, more than likely complaints were addressed at the relevant people and clearly not addressed properly or people wouldn’t have issues.

Briefly, sat at tiny table, starters were good, came quickly. Main courses all arrived at different times, party was only of 5. Mixed up side orders and found it hard to get service for drinks. Had to go to the bar myself twice!!! TV was on loudly our dining conversation was somewhat difficult. Wouldn't go again, end of story.

Chris C  (10 June 2003)

Well said Patricia, totally agree. Half of those posting abuse should stay in Blackpool! The other half should try and improve their own restaurants instead of pretending to be disgruntled tourists ;-)

F G  (10 June 2003)

Now now children…..... I am entitled to my opinion and expectations when I dine out, I am not making this up it is what I felt when I ate there. I’m not saying don’t go there if you read what I said, I’m just saying I wouldn’t go there again, and certainly not every night. This entire website is the purpose of relaying your experiences back to other people, this isn't the Mermaids fan club.com!!!!!!!!!!! Firstly my waiter was English, and the gentlemen owner was the person who I spoke to about my meal when I had to return it actually. I chose not to eat in Mermaids again for the EXACT reason that I wanted Greek food, cooked the Greek way, which is why I never returned to Mermaids. I don’t go all the way to another country to eat the English way, which is exactly MY point about mermaids. I didn't have any other problems in the other Greek restaurants (which had a smaller selection, but a fresher and better meal in my experience) my food was always near damn perfect, and I had no translation difficulties there. I stand by MY opinion that I am entitled to, and allowed to voice. So for those of you who cannot beeeeelieeeevve it – get over it, some of us don’t like Mermaids as we feel that it is, as mentioned in other comments, nothing more than a Brits Abroad restaurant for people who go to the same place every night, in the same country every year. Most people will go anyway to try it, some will love it, some will hate it – that’s just the way it is.

Patricia S  (10 June 2003)

i just cannot belive the comments i have just read. we have been going to zante for the past 5 years. in fact we are going out there next sunday, to stay with people we met in the mermaid. yes sure in the best of places you get an off meal, we have never had one in 5 years, but so what. remember in greece unless you speak greek your instructons might not be the same as in england. so learn to speak greek or do the other thing. if you send 1 meal back (out of 2) you will eat on your own, or send both meals back!!!!!!! the only problem we have with the mermaid is there is too much of it. we go to greece 3 times a year, the only down side of greece is the english. the mermaid is clean (ask to look round the place) the food is good (too much of it) the staff are great. the owners (take a bow) con and adel. if you have a complaint ask to speak to con, adele, emme or miri. they will sort it out then and there. don't put up with it and then come home and slag the place off. take our word, we have just come back from corfu (great place) and are now going to zante for a meal at the mermaid. i am the worst person in the world for eating out, do not like any one else cooking a meal for me, my husband is worse than me, i i have not cooked it he will not eat it. looking at 7 days eating out in the mermaid. see you next week, con, adele, emma, miri etcxxxxx

Patricia S  (10 June 2003)

Oh well if you want to be picky, any where in Greece can be good or bad. We have being going to Zante for te last 5 years. The food in the Mermaid is, well trust me, you will never get a meal like that at home. I do have one complaint, there is too much of it. Breafast, well what can I say about that. My husband likes a full English, me a like a bit of something. So at Mermaids I order fruit juice, coffe, and poached eggs on toast, (you will not get poached eggs anywhere in Greece, believe me, we have tried). The staff, well, we made friend with a couple of the staff and they stay with us and we stay with them, infact we are going ovr next Sunday to stay with them for a week. Con and Adelie they own Mermaids) can not do enough for you. If the complainers had made their complains known at the time it would have been sorted. But no the BIG BRITISH WINGERS, (you all know them folks) they come home and slag the place down. Don't listen to me go there and try the place. Look at the other coments and go and see for yourself. If you are not happy, don't wait to come home, ask for Con, Adele, Emma, Miri or anyone else in there. They will make it right for you. The most important thing to remember is you are in a diffrent country. If you want English food, served up English style.STAY IN ENGLAND.From Pat and David, who cannot wait to have beef stiffardo in the Mermaids next Sundy night

Trish W  (09 June 2003)

F G  (09 June 2003)

OK, here goes, hope I don't get shot down by all of you out there!! I ate at Mermaids one night in Kalamaki and to be honest I thought it was extremely over rated. If you want to go all the way to Greece to eat in what I consider the equivalent to a Harvester or Hungry Horse than that is your choice however I am here to give my opinion on this restaurant. I know sometimes kids can be fussy but there were so many beautiful and traditional, clean places to eat in Kalamaki that will be more than happy to adapt greek dishes to cater for kiddies more basic tastes I would say that by eating here every night you are missing out dreadfully!! Now the food, I ordered the fillet steak, and asked for it to be cooked medium, it came out well done, so I sent it back, they cooked me a fresh one, but my boyfriend had to sit and eat his food while I waited for mine. The steak came out again, and it was slightly less well done but still overcooked, by this time I didn’t fancy finishing my meal one my own so I just ate it. It came with one small-undercooked jacket potato and a small salad!! The service was awful, the waiters and waitresses seemed more interested in clearing up getting rid of people than to get us another drink to accompany a dry, late meal!! We also tried here for breakfast, that was lukewarm and greasy, again a disappointment; we found a far better breakfast venue somewhere else! To sum up, a very British, expensive (in comparison to the rest of our meals), and nothing special!! For those of you who want to taste a bit of the place you have CHOSEN to visit the I suggest giving this place a miss and trying the vast choice of other restaurants on this resort!!

Emma C  (08 June 2003)

To all that reads this, I would like to take this chance to put my opinions foreward. I have worked in the holiday industry for a long period of time for a company which i can not name. I would like to say thank you to the Mermaids owner and staff. Not only do they provide us with excellent food and excellent service but also a fantastic friendly atmosphere in the restaurant. The owners and staff work hard to maintain this standard of excellence and the main objective is for 100% customer satisfaction. Don't just take my word for it, you give the chance and you go for the Mermaids experiance. I can not fault it.

Andrew F  (08 June 2003)

I agree - everyone is entitled to an opinion. I am going to Zante in July and I will be going to Mermaids, so I will give you my unbiased opinion :-)

Jamie   (07 June 2003)

Good food, good service and very reasonably priced, would definately come back here although more of a place to go for lunch rather than an evening meal.

Sue M  (07 June 2003)

About time web master but please know this you should give a check on all emails and ips cause there are allot of faulse ones there.
And also have noticed comments being taken off too those u favour?
You know my email please write.
Thankyou webmaster.

Tommy S  (07 June 2003)

We thank everyone at Mermaids for making our stay in Kalamaki superb!!! The food was excellent, and we couldn't believe how quickly we were served! The menu was more like a bible and we only wish we were here longer to try more of the dishes!! it wasn't just the food that made this restaurant stand out from the rest though, the atmosphere was brilliant, the staff were friendly, and we finished up with the most terrific Greek night!!! Cheers and all the best!!! See you again soon!

Eric T  (07 June 2003)

chris and sue u are very sad 2 keep singing mermaids praises ,like mr farmer writes everyone can have their say, but u pair are so far up your own a**es, mermaids this mermaids that. u must have no tastebuds or any senses at all.give somewhere else a try maybe harry ramsdens in grimsby. merry xmas!

Ohdear M  (06 June 2003)

CHILDREN!
Time to stop your squabling, everyone is entitled to an opinion. Obviously this is why the comment page has been designed.
Wherever we go, and whatever we do in life somewhere somehow someone will voice their opinions. Kalamaki is a growing town, with many different restaurants to choose from. Naturally they will not be able to cater to everyones needs every now and then, hence the vast choice of restaurants. Common sense tells us when suggestions are made on this site, the managers should take all the comments seriously and into consideration. This is for the owner/managers own good which is why we the customers should not obligate other customers opinions to change. Their opinions are all valid hence the success of many restaurants in kalamaki through people voicing their opinions.

Victoria S  (06 June 2003)

brilliant food wicked staff will come and come again!!!

Chris C  (06 June 2003)

well it was more accurate than your last description matey!

Sue M  (06 June 2003)

WE love you too richard can we suggest a day at the farm ooops sorry.

Richard F  (06 June 2003)

The food was brilliant, the tables and indeed the tabecloths were brilliant, the floor looked wonderful, the cutlery was shiny, the TV was really big and lovely, the bottles on the bar glinted in the moonlight, Elton John was the entertainment, Madonna tucked into the best ribs in the universe, what more can I say it was a truly life changing experience. Chris and sue, can I suggest anger management.

Sue M  (06 June 2003)

Everyone is allowed a opinion farmer but what next the website pictures in mermaids maybe the forks where a bit bent no i think you are the bent one see a doctor you are as i say a sad man and the webmaster should sort this war with farmer out as he clearly is a very twisted little man if he is that?.
Chris you and thousands love the place but the world needs little turds like farmer too make the brits a complainig nation send the the man too a doctor quick.

Chris C  (05 June 2003)

Where would YOU recommend Mr Farmer? Agree with Sue. look at how attitudes have changed to the English in Laganas, and who can blame people? Brawling, vomiting, do we go on? There are SOME Brits abroad who do want to experience Greece for Greece itself!

Richard F  (05 June 2003)

Any person(s) giving an opinion which in the opinion of the illiterate contributor is deemed to be of a nature that is over-opinionated or in any way intelligent literate or punctuated shall be subject to an extreme opinion containing opinionated opinions. The opionee shall at times express an opinion to the opionor unless in the opinion of the opionor the opinionees opinion was pointless.

Richard F  (05 June 2003)

And what's more, I have just visited the Mermaids website; they must be really busy as they have not bothered to update the site since 2000. No NEW guests and NEW shots of uproarious laughter from the millions of satisfied NEW customers. Hope bringing this to your attention doesn't result in the bloody Thought Police kicking my door down. Still, I am only a no-life who gives 'us Brits' a bad name. Although in my defence I believe the trend of bad name giving started long before this particular 'prat' got to the island.

Richard F  (05 June 2003)

So sorry, i thought the idea of this site was to give an opinion based upon my own experience. I wont be abusive to you Sue as I prefer to meet people before forming an opinion. As for being a 'Webmaster', you are welcome to see my entry in the Garden Village guest book, as this is where i stayed with my wife and children. If you talk to the owners i am sure they will confirm that i am just an average holiday maker who looks to get value for my hard earned money. My comments regarding Zepos were very fair - indeed I describe the service and location as wonderful and the onion soup as the best in the world , I just happen to think that they burn the mixed grill and the lamb chops. As far as I know, having an opinion is not yet an arrestable offence. For the record i should say that the Mermaids breakfast is very nice, but that does not change the fact that in my opinion the quality of the BBQ platter is nothing short of appauling when compared to the very high standards that my family and I enjoyed two years ago. I am very pleased that the owner of Mermaids is very busy and making alot of money, although unlike yourself i do not celebrate the misfortune of the less busy restaurants, as I am sure that all restrauters work very hard and are looking to make an honest living. I would have thought that giving honest opinions such as mine, which are not based on friendship or other emotional ties, would be welcomed by those looking to offer high standards. Another point patiently made and no doubt another point expertly missed by your goodself.

Sue M  (04 June 2003)

Its people like farmer that give brits a bad name just look at the comments for zepos as well from him the man is a prat webmaster you have too start sorting out your site too many idiots like him on here.
And the owner im sure wouldent give a stuff about your comment the place is packed and the food is wonderfull.
Farmer get a life sad man.

Richard F  (04 June 2003)

Firstly, for the record, I do not work for another restaurant nor do I know anybody that does. I visited Mermaids twice with my wife and two children and was amazed that a restaurant can have deteriorated so much since our last visit in 2001. Their claim to be the best was true then, but simply isn't now. Example: BBQ platter was fantastic in 2001 and lived up to the promise on their menu. The 'rack of baby ribs' is now a splat of over cooked cheap ribs that are simply horrible. The coleslaw was unrecognisable as such - it appeared as a pink pasty substance in a white pot. This was not a one-off as we visited twice just in case the chef had been hungover first time round. The staff still smile, or perhaps it's a smirk. But who can blame the owners of many of the restaurants in Kalamaki for providing crap food - judging from the other recent comments (if they are true)most Brits will not only eat dog turds if served on a pretty plate with HP sauce, but will smile and leave a tip into the bargain. If the owner of Mermaids wishes to sue me, he will have to demonstrate that I am wrong. Now theres a challenge. ADVICE - until Mermaids sharpens up it's act, keep your Euros in your pocket. Just out of interest, if you do visit take a look at the 'photo wall' full of happy smiling faces and praise from years gone by. Rather faded now, as is the food.

Jezebel G  (02 June 2003)

This definitely has the biggest and most varied menu on the island. Vegetarians have about thirty starter choices and twentyfive main course choices - how an omnivore ever makes up his mind I've no idea! The portions are enormous and the food is good. the only downside is that the restaurant is somethat a victim of it;s own success - it's always crowded, the staff always seem harrassed (they clearly do work very hard but are all polite and efficient) and the meals do have a mass-market quaility abiut them - everything arrives with the same side dish of salad, each table gets one round roll and one long one. it's good food though, and a fun night. Varied entertainment and fantastic deserts.

Trish W  (31 May 2003)

we have just visited Mermaids for the first time. A fantastic menu on offer the best we have ever seen. food excellent, service fantastic a great welcome by all the staff. 100% at all times excellent.

Chris C  (29 May 2003)

You find that people who post abuse on here either are other restaurant owners or liars. The reason Mermaids is twice as busy as anywhere else is because it`s the only place where all the food is fresh, the steaks are imported high quality and not the rammell served up elsewhere and the portions are massive, not to mention the excellent service. we eat here every night, I go to Zante twice a year.

Dale C  (29 May 2003)

Great food, Great Service,There must be two Mermaids then, never had problems like some of the below comments

Sue M  (29 May 2003)

Its so strange that you get the odd people like karen and steve that comment about fast food places? yes mermaids does get extremely busy i would say twice more than any restaurant, but the staff and ownners make sure that everyone has a great meal and service and a fact i know that you ask around and evryone is raving about this place once you have been you will see why.

Steve W  (28 May 2003)

IS THERE 2 MERMAIDS IN KALAMAKI? BECAUSE THE 1 WE WENT IN WAS WORSE THAN WIMPEYS!, I FELT THAT RUSHED I THOUGHT THEY WERE GOING 2 EAT IT 4 ME THE FOOD WAS FOUL,TABLE WAS SO SMALL I THOUGHT IT WAS A BEER MAT, WONT BE VISITING AGAIN! SOONER HAVE A CRISP SARNIE!

Robert T  (27 May 2003)

Always very busy - when you go there you'll understand why!

Steve M  (27 May 2003)

Came here with the family, excellent service catered for the children, lovely food, with a huge selection, ended up there everynight, Highly recomended !!!

Karen C  (26 May 2003)

sorry but I cant see how anyone can say this place is excellent ,it has fast food which is cold the portions are average ,just served on a large plate, an over rated macdonalds

Julia B  (24 May 2003)

tried mermaids because of the recommendations on this site, found however that it was dissapointing, service was excellent, starters also excellent, main course was average very tough chicken in the pot, tried again for a second time for lunch, which was the hardest jacket potato i have ever had, tried for second evening again excellent service, starters, and dissapointing main courses. still worth going,

Sue M  (22 May 2003)

Great food great people and very good friends of ours allways happy too see you. yet again the best place around nothing comes close imagination presentation excellent staff and food.
Con and Adele are ace.

Amanda P  (21 May 2003)

Visited Mermaids twice, the first time was excellent I had the Beef Sizzler which was yummy.. the second time however not so good, with Kalamki Surf and Turf. Steak was dry and tough and the scampi was a bit omnious!! Staff great, very efficient, maybe a bit too for my liking. They tried to swipe my husbands dinner before he'd finished on a number of occasions.
Got very busy after about 8pm, so if you want a table, get there a bit earlier.

Joe R  (20 May 2003)

Must have been a one off for me judging by the rest of the comments - the food was very poor as if it was simply microwaved - the problem could well be that the menu is too extensive for them to provide quality - the staff tho' are excellent and the atmosphere is good - breakfasts are great

Charlene B  (17 May 2003)

speedy we all miss you lodes and eny one that wants to go there they are really frendly

Ian M  (16 May 2003)

The recommendations here are justified (unlike Buon Amici which was similarly recommended but did not live up to expectation). The service is really good, both accomodating and friendly, and there always seemed to be someone on hand to serve you.
The food was good too and the range fantastic. You must visit this place.

Chris C  (15 May 2003)

Here we come again, the Chesterfield boys back on 9 July for 2 weeks, see you all in the best restaurant in Zante (every night as usual!!!!!) and in Angels, I`ll bring the CDs!!!!!

Louisa P  (10 March 2003)

We came on holidays from athens in august, and mermaids was so busy we decided too see what the fuss was about? Trust me the food service and atmosphere was second too none.I had the steak sizzler my husband the kleftico and my son a wrapper and it could not have been better thumbs up for making kalamaki famous for your food.

Sue P  (08 February 2003)

We have been visting Zante since 1998 and have tried many different resturants. We always return to Mermaids.Yes they get busy, but the reasons easy to see.food has always been good, mostly excellent. The staff are always pleased to see you and can cope with a party of 21 turning up AT 9pm without pre booking. Not many resturants could or would do that!!
The price is good value for the size of the portions.Only tried breakfast twice as normally still a bed (as hung over from visting Angels Bar the night before)but both times excellent.
So thaks CON and all your staff. See you this year
Sue and family

Ian C  (20 January 2003)

EXCELLENT PLACE, LOVELY PEOPLE ALLWAYS HAD A SMILE FOR YOU, WE ATE THERE EVERY MORNING AND PROBABLY EVERY OTHER NIGHT, WE NEVER HAD A BAD MEAL THERE.

Tony K  (19 December 2002)

Paul S  (28 October 2002)

Service and price were o.k. Try the Jack Daniels salmon and see if you can guess what it really is, coz it ain`t Salmon! Even though the surly waiter tried to tell my missus otherwise. Would never enter again.

Neil S  (22 October 2002)

Ate there every night it was that good. Staff are all superb and always friendly. You get a discount card for Angels bar with your bill too...bargain. Well worth a visit and definately the best on the Island.

Claire K  (03 October 2002)

I have been to zante every year for the last 6 years and didn't discover this place till this year but I went for two weeks in july and ate here every night and I also went for a week in sept and again ate here every night. The food is excellent (my top choices, savoury chicken crepe, spicy chicken wrapper or tuna pasta bake) but truely anything on the menu is gorgeous and plenty of it and very cheap.. The service is excellent and the staff are so friendly especially yiannis and pedros ( Hi Guys ) p.s Yiannis you'd better keep in touch. Tried nearly every restaurant in Kalamaki and in Laganas over the years but I have to say this is the best by far.

Michael B  (27 September 2002)

Further to my previous comment, Mermaids is the best for vegetarians and has the most choice of food in Kalamaki.

Michael B  (27 September 2002)

The best meals and V.F.M. we had during our stay. Gets very busy and noisy however.

Nick D  (26 September 2002)

If you want a great meal come and give mermaids a visit . The steaks are tops and there are specials for the day to add to an already huge menu.Does get busy around 8.30 onwards but success has its price.Good service and value for money as well.We were at mermaids 10 nights out of 14 because there was always something else we wanted to try.

Dawn M  (20 September 2002)

JUST GOT BACK FROM 1ST TIME IN ZANTE. IF YOU GO TO A RESORT NEAR MERMAIDS YOU MUST VISIT!!! GREAT FOOD! REALLY NICE STAFF AND GREAT PRICES. AN ABSOLUTE MUST!

Steve&ann S  (16 September 2002)

We went to Mermaids a couple of times. The food is very good but they seem to rush people a lot. its a case of pack them in as much as possible. I did not think it was the best resturant in Kalamaki. If you want the best go to Mikalos

Kathryn S  (09 September 2002)

Very, very busy restaurant, excellent quick service but was disappointed with my main course -just average, starters and wine fine!!

Bryn W  (07 September 2002)

The fact that we went twice for breakfast should be testament enough, considering the other excellent options available in Kalamaki.

Craige C  (26 August 2002)

We have just returned and visited Mermaids based upon the entries to this site. We tried Mermaids 3 times...the first time both the food and service was excellent as we arrived before 8pm; the second time was very poor - there weren't any set tables available and so a table was dragged from the storeroom and we were crammed into the main access route to the kitchen...they don't turn business away! And after the second request for us to move in order to allow staff access to serve the additional tables, we asked to be moved or to be left alone, which to give them credit they left us alone to have our meal in "relative" comfort. Thinking this was just a "glitch" due to them being so busy, we decided to give a third and final chance, during which the service was slow due to it being so busy again. I also came down with something not very pleasant! the next morning which may also be a coincidence. If you are going to go - get there before 7:45pm or be prepared to wait for your food, which by the way is a mighty large portion!

Troy R  (18 August 2002)

Went twice during our stay there. The food portions are HUGE !!!. However I did cop for something dodgy i think the second time we went, because the following morning I was really ill (and it wasn't the drink either as I hadn't had too many !) Would definitely go back.

Sue M  (17 August 2002)

Again another fantastic holiday fantastic service and food at mermaids need i say more than you have to try the best on the island.

Phil, C  (16 August 2002)

Excellent choice of menu, from Greek to burgers. No complaint about the quality of food or the size of the portions. The service on the night we went was only average but to be fair it was chucking it down and they had to move all the tables in from the edges and the waiters were having problems getting between them. We were'nt impressed by the earthquake either (5.2 on the Richter Scale) but I don't suppose you can blame Mermaids for that!

Peter M  (15 August 2002)

We visited Mermaids once whilst in Kalamaki and the food was good and the service also good.Yes it was very busy as you would expect for a restaurant with so many good reviews on this site, but you must remember that the Greek people do not rush anything and your on holiday, so sit back and relax and enjoy the night.

Judith E  (13 August 2002)

We came here as it was highly recommended. The food was good, lots to choose from but it was just too busy. we had to wait for a table, wait for service and wait for food.it has become a victim of it's own success.

Gillian Y  (09 August 2002)

I have to say Mermaids was a real treat, the food was fantastic, the service was second to none, and the value for money was amazing. We were there in May 2002 and went to Mermaids more times than any other restaurant. If we go back to Zante, we will definitely return to Mermaids. Would recommend it to anyone.

Charlotte D  (08 August 2002)

we went here on our third night, after excellent reccomendations from this site. it was the only restaurant we had in mind that we MUST visit. Well, thanks a lot everyone ! my stuffed cheeseburgers weren't actually stuffed with anything and were cold in the middle. The seafood platter my boyfriend had was tasteless. the staff were very friendly. however, we asked 4 different people for our bill at the end (god, you'd think we WANTED to pay for the crap we ate) and still had to wait half an hour before they got round to sorting it out. and no, we didnt go at a busy time (it was half empty). Oh, and the milkshake i ordered halfway through my meal took so long to arrive, we were picking up our stuff to leave by the time they got round to bringing it to our table !!! i think people confuse EXCELLENT food with an EXCELLENT CHOICE of food and EXCELLENT service with FRIENDLY service.

Rachel & Lee  (08 August 2002)

We ate at mermaids and found the food and service to be really good, it was a reasonably priced as well. At the mermaids they also a big screen where they have different films on every night starting at ten.

Christine W  (02 August 2002)

Well it wasn't what I expected. The service was really poor and its was the worst meal of the whole holiday. Wouldn't go back there.

Jennie A  (01 August 2002)

The food ere was alwayz gud went bak nite afta nite, one of the reasons mite of been the fit waiter (can ya balme uz?) we alwayz seemed 2 av luk ther usualy involvin stacey bein drunk..nvr forget gav turnin up in his Mr Muscle shirt (arrr) n e wayz, without a doubt the best 4 food!!

Chris C  (31 July 2002)

Our group ate there 13 out of 14 nights - huge menu choices, the only PROPER steak in Kalamaki, good staff and superb prices. Look for yourselves - I`ve seen people waiting to go in Mermaids with the other restaurants nearly empty. Try it for yourselves - Con the owner is always on hand if you need to sort any menu requirements and you will NOT be disappointed. the mixed grills and steaks are specialities, but the fish is also superb. If you fancy something spicy, try the Jambalaya pasta too.....I could go on..... you see the same people back night after night - it is without doubt the best on the island.

Jane E  (30 July 2002)

After hearing such good comments, we went! Food was OK but very expensive and I think if i had gone to the toilet before I had eaten, I wouldnt have bothered. Very over rated!! If you do go, dont sit in the bottom corner on the right hand side when you walk in. There is a big white blanc sign just over your head that turns into a big screen and deafens you wether your eating or not!!!!! and the whole of the restaurant has their eyes on you!!!!!!

Stacey G  (27 July 2002)

gtreat food cheap prices and you get a card fot cheap drinks at angels!! great service too love stacey xx

Tony J  (26 July 2002)

After arriving 4 our 5th year,1st port of call being mermaids.our clan of 14 found everything just as normal,EXCELLENT.....CHEERS CON,see u in september.Sue Tony & the clan.......

Lee M  (24 July 2002)

Have to say, after what i'd heard i was expecting great things, but i can honestly say this place was pretty dire. Food was crap, serive was even worse. go there at your peril.

Sarah T  (22 July 2002)

First ate at Mermaids in 2000, food was really good everything about the restuarant was great. Went back in 2002, food was dire!!!service was poor, the greek night was something you definitely needed ear plugs for, far too loud, and not at all authentic. It seems as if they have forgone good food and service for brashness and loudness. Food was very unsubstantial, looked like they were offering huge portions, but the plate was mostly filled with rice & salad.... There are much nicer places to eat.

Laura H  (21 July 2002)

I have eaten at Mermaids throughout my hols in Greece, the food, service and price were all excellent, I will definatetly be revisiting Mermaids next summer in greece with all my friends!!!!

Steve G  (18 July 2002)

THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THIS GOLD MINE ALSO OWN ANGELS (BAR AROUND THE CORNER - NOT AS GOOD!). ALL SERIOUSNESS THE BEST FOOD ON THE ISLAND. PORTIONS WERE HUGE AND TASTY!! :) ONLY DOWN-SIDE IS THEY ARE EXTREMLY BUSY AROUND 7-8ish' AND THEY JUST WANT U TO EAT AND GO!! - GREAT PLACE THOUGH - GO THERE!!

Sue M  (16 July 2002)

food, service and price were excellent never tasted food like it before nerver had a bad meal and we dined there 10 nights out of the 14 we where there. tried other restaurants but non compared to mermaids. will definately be recommending to anyone who is going to zante for thier hols.

Hannah P  (16 July 2002)

You would be a fool too compare this place with other restaurants,The garnishes The quality of the meats you just cant start to compare ,we went to 4 restaurants because from the first night we got to kalamki we were told to try mermaids we could not get in too busy so we tried across the road dire and further on zakino and padesia and then when we did get in too mermaids you could see what all the fuss was about. Well done too mermaids they have it sussed.

Shelley-marie T  (16 July 2002)

It has to be said that Mermaids food was gorgeous, the portion was huge and the price is so cheap. However its downfall is the service that we got. We were the only people in the restuarant and the staff were all sitting around on a table, waited nearly half an hour for our bill as the staff kept looking over and ignoring us. We only got it because we had to go up to the table ourselves and ask. They got no tips from us.

Maxine W  (11 July 2002)

you may well find that the quantity here is better than the quality (depending on what you order) if you want to eat lamb kleftiko then try somewhere else the one i had here was awful

Sue M  (10 July 2002)

Would just like to say what an excellant restaurant this is. The food and service were top class. We tried a few different restaurants but they didn't come close to the quality at Mermaids. There's plenty of different meat dishes to try as well as plenty of vegetarian meals and you get loads on your plate. We got jacket potatoes with our meals and they were done to perfection. This is a must to dine at.

Claire L  (08 July 2002)

well what can i say, it was fantasic the best resturant on the island!the mermaids puts us british to shame, it has a huge english menu with anything you could imagin on it!the service is always with a smile and the food is a total 10/10 yum yum!!!!!

Denise W  (08 July 2002)

Arrived At zante from uk with my boyfriend in june and found kalamaki a excellent resort compared to laganas,We also tried many restaurants but nothing compared to the mermaid price service food, yes it was very busy but hey is that not a good sign it is where i come from,i know one thing for sure you will always come back to this place as no other really seems to match it.

Sarah C  (07 July 2002)

Very busy restaurant; good selection of food and plenty of it. It felt like we couldn't really relax and 'savour the atmosphere!' as the waiters were rushing about and some of the waitresses seemed close to tears.

Julie P  (07 July 2002)

Visited Mermaids after perusing this site with all its good reviews..found it was hardly worth what it is cracked up to be, you get the illusion you are receiving great service, as you are attended by several different waiters; one to show you the menu, one to take your order, another to bring your starter, yet another to ask if everythings Okay.. then the main meal arrives and yes, there's plenty of it, but unless you starve yourself for 24hrs prior..you'll not finish it! Had Lamb Kleftiko which was pretty mediocre. Perhaps I should have tried an "English" option food-wise, but then, I go on holidays to live as the locals do..thats half the fun of it...if you want MacDonald's go to Blackpool!

Leon D  (04 July 2002)

Mermaids is great we ate there every night. They have a good choice of english and greek food and is very reasonable. If you go to kalamaki you must visit and you wouldn't look back. You know who this is from because we had mousaka every night. we were here from 20/06/2002 until 04/07/2002

Alison S  (02 July 2002)

The best! After trying other restaurants and being disappointed with the quality, service & price, Mermaids was recommended to us. Over our 14 day stay we tried a wide range from the vast menu and thoroughly enjoyed every meal. The service was excellent, staff very friendly & customer focused. What more can we say?

Tim L  (30 June 2002)

We loved this place 12 out of the 14 nights we ate at mermaids, some people must definately be paid to say stupid things, get real this place has over 300 choices from greek too whatever you fancy they even had a young girl making ballons for kiddies ,and the staff run around to make sure you have service god some restaurants over the road have less than half the work mermaids had and the food and service was bad there. take it from me i own stevensons restaurant in leeds and this place has got to be the best i have eaten in and i know about food and seervice. well done to mermaids...

Sharon H  (29 June 2002)

To say that this restaurant rates 10 out of 10 is rubbish. We had to wait for our table with several other people and you felt that you were in the way. The waiters were rushing around like headless chickens and they didn't have time to talk to you, it was like being on a conveyer belt, order, eat, out. Small portions wasn't nice, even the kids didn't eat there meals.

Sally A  (29 June 2002)

excellent choice of food, the seats where very comfortable and they have entertainment every night with great prices on drinks. We tried a few places around and found this one to be not only the best but compleatly differnt to them all.Should not even be in this list its really by far no 1.

Louise G  (29 June 2002)

WE TRIED MERMAIDS ON OUR FIRST DAY OF HOLIDAY,JUNE 02.THE PIZZA WAS GREASY AND MY PARTNER HAD CAJUN LAMB CHOPS WITH GREEK STYLE ROAST POTATOES, STAY AWAY FROM BOTH OF THESE.WE DID TRY IT AGAIN ON THE LAST NIGHT OF OUR HOLIDAY AND ENJOYED IT , SO WE PUT THE FIRST TRYS DISAPPOINTMENT DOWN TO POOR SELECTIONS ON OUR PART.

Kat   (29 June 2002)

So what's the fuss over Mermaids? We went there to have a meal and it was absolutely packed (which is usually a good sign), but it was very, very hot and had no air-con (yes, I know it's mostly al-fresco, but other places had cold air blowing!!). Compared to most other restauraunts in Kalamaki and Limnos the prices were twice as much. Because there were people waiting for tables, the waiters were rushing other customers. That put us off big time, so we went elsewhere

Glynne W  (28 June 2002)

the service and food was very good and the largest portions in Kalamaki is was the 2nd best we visited

Chris C  (28 June 2002)

Jackie - is that Jackie and Chris from Angels? Hello if so - from Chris (Chesterfield)

Sally R  (26 June 2002)

ate here a couple of times during our holiday both times were good. the 2nd time we went our meal was delayed but they gave us a free ltr of wine! anyone visiting kalamaki must try it especially on greek night, the entertainment fantastic.

Jackie T  (26 June 2002)

I CAN NOT BELIEVE THERE ARE EVEN BAD COMMENTS ON THIS PAGE. MERMAIDS MAY NOT BE EVERYONES CUP OF TEA, BUT I CAN NOT POSSIBLY SEE WHY! THE MENU IS HUGE WITH FOOD TO SUIT ALL, THE SERVICE IS FAST, THE STAFF ARE FRIENDLY AND WITH FILMS, THEMED NIGHTS AND QUIZ'S GREAT FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT IS AVALIABLE TOO. I DO NOT THINK YOU WILL BE DISSAPOINTED AND YOU WILL CERTAINLY NOT FIND A BETTER RESTAURANT IN KALAMAKI, I WAS THERE FOR FOUR MONTHS LAST SEASON AND DIDN'T FIND ONE, ATE AT MERMAIDS ALL THE TIME. BIG HELLO TO EVERYONE LOVE JACKIE X

Barry G  (21 June 2002)

We had a fab time in Mermaids, the food was great and plenty of it,the service was good.We were recommending it to every one we met in Zante. From Barry Green of London

Chris C  (16 June 2002)

4 and a half weeks till we go.....and this is the place to eat.. I certainly agree that people should try different to burger and chips, but I don`t know how anyone can criticise that the food isn`t traditional - the only thing which makes Mermaids so different is cos it`s so popular you might wait a while and it`s a lot bigger than most restaurants. If you want palm trees and singers great - and that`s why I also like Paris - but for sheer value and high standards it`s got to be Mermaids. Try finding the massive peppered steak I had last year somewhere else for the price (about £4.80). Anyhow - 17 July - watch out for us scoffing the mixed grills. I`m the guy in the Chesterfield shirt (probably slouched in a corner in Angels lol)!

Yvonne S  (15 June 2002)

Yet again Mermaids came out tops - seven people in our group including a vegetarian - we dined there about 8 times in our two week stay and none of us were ever diappointed. Sometimes the wait was a bit lengthy - but what's the rush?

Paul D  (09 June 2002)

The service was fairly slow and the staff didn't seem to know what they were doing. If you want something traditional this is not the place to go.The food was ok and the portions huge. The steak was dry and chewy and the bbq sauce very peppery. However they were quick to realise something was wrong with it and didn't charge us.Good if you have young children.

Simon A  (08 June 2002)

We have been visiting mermaids for years and i know for a fact that this place tops all others by miles,The owners Con and Adele tell us they have a turn over of 400 people a night and other restaurants dont do anything like them and people keep queing while other restaurants beg for custom and since the owners are greek english and australian you have the most wonderfull mixture of food that just beats all hands down. Freindly people fast service great entertainment thats why its the best in zante.

Sian R  (08 June 2002)

This was one of the best, the kids loved it and if it had been up to them we would have gone there every night. All staff were very frendly and the food was fab and plenty of it.

Tricia E  (07 June 2002)

Sorry , we gave it 2 goes, but without any joy. Waited 45 minutes for main course the 1st night ( with 4 children, that was a disaster!)Decided on a 2nd go, 25 mins for 1st course and another 25 mins for mains, my pork chop would have made grest shoe leather ! The place has just got too big and cannot cope with it. No atmosphere at all.

Tommy G  (04 June 2002)

again we went there and they where not very friendly as staed by some one else all they want is you in and out as fast as poss--there are a lot of better places in Kalamaki--sorry to say this did not meet up to what we expected

Dionne   (03 June 2002)

This was the best restaurant that we ate at all week...we had several dinners and won a couple of breakfasts at one of their quiz nights. they do the best spare ribs i have tasted in my life...they could have been dog but i really don't care..they were lush!!!! they even have a x box for the kids to play on while you wait for your order....very very busy in the evening, but the service was excellent, really friendly and helpful...the only problem was the steak could be a bit hit and miss..."rare" and "well done" were occasionally confused...but still excellent quality all the same!

Lindsey R  (03 June 2002)

Massive menu with something for everyone - almost 10 sides of choice! Always packed so quick turn round. Good service and food good - could have been hotter! Veggies tasted like out of a bag though!

Howard T  (02 June 2002)

In the last 4 years we have tried all the restaurants in Kalamaki and it is still the best. This years Greek night was a street stopped until some spoil sport phoned the cops.Still when you are the best there always someone to knock you.keep up the good work Con and Odel we will see you in September.

Declan G  (28 May 2002)

Myself and my Wife ate here every night we were in Kalamaki (last week). Excellent menu, excellent service, excellent food and excellent prices. All the staff here work very hard and you do not need to ask for anything. A must for anyone visiting Kalamaki.

Geoff P  (26 May 2002)

we thought this was the best restuarant in kalamaki service was brilliant as was the food. staff were very friendly and very good with the children as was the owners nothing seemed to be to much trouble for them. will be recommending mermaids to all my friends who are going out this year.many thanks mermaids

Linda H  (21 May 2002)

SIMPLY SHOULD BE VOTED AS NO1 IN EUROPE GREAT FOOD SERVICE AND SMILES THANKYOU AGAIN..........

Tina B  (20 May 2002)

IN ALL THE 5YRS WE HAVE BEEN TO KALAMAKI WE HAVE ONLY HAD BREAKFAST HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME LAST YEAR WE GO AGAIN JUNE 13TH AND ARE SET FOR A NICE EVENING MEAL IF THE BREAKFAST WAS ANYTHING TO GO BY. WELL WORTH A TRY ANYWAY

Simon A  (18 May 2002)

thankyou again to the wonderfull staff ande food at mermaids see you all soon again xxxx

Simon A  (22 April 2002)

Not long now till we go to the best resort, best restaurant and great island. See you all soon.

Dave&julie J  (21 April 2002)

hi gang we going back there 1st may this year b ready for some fun and serious drinking

Yvonne S  (30 March 2002)

Mega portions, fantastic choice, excellent service - need I say more?

Lynn F  (24 March 2002)

See you soon guys fantastic....

Sally P  (05 March 2002)

Brilliant first class restaurant with family facilities, great food and fantastic staff. Not to be missed. Thanks again for a brilliant 2 weeks Adele and Con and all Mermaids staff.

Simon P  (26 February 2002)

This place is really the best on the island,I should know i own antibo in derby and i would not want too compete with mermaids ,thumbs up.

Terry S  (25 October 2001)

we ate at mermaids 10 out of fifteen nights every night we tried something differnt the portions we big and really well presented,as for taste it was wonderfull to be able too enjoy your meals and entertainment all under one roof this is by far the best in zante and all the rest just seem too wait till mermaids fill so they can get the tail ends.

Mary Y  (12 October 2001)

This restaurant is not up to the standard it tries to depict. The service is not very good and on the two occasions we ate there the food was cold. It seems like they want to get you in and out - so they can attain a high turnover.

Chris C  (30 September 2001)

This was my third time in Kalamaki and the first I`d been to Mermaids. There`s not many now I`ve not tried and this is WITHOUT DOUBT by far the best restaurant on the resort. One of our group tried the mixed grill - you will not see anything like that anywhere else - it was absolutely huge. My peppered sirloin steak (for £5) was enormous and piled high with all the trimmings. For price, quality of food and service Mermaids is a must. You can judge for yourself - in the last week of September when other restaurants are practically empty, there was hardly a table free here. Ignore the inane comments below about McDonalds etc. Once you`ve been here you WON`T go anywhere else!

Terry S  (30 September 2001)

More than just your normal mousaka joint excellent service and food a mile above the rest.

Dean M  (18 September 2001)

Well there are two of us that loved Mermaids. One English and one Dutch and it was an excellent place to watch the England v Germany match and the servers were ace especially tha young Albanian lad who cheered on the English and every time he came to our table England added another goal [5 goals]. So proof positive that the service is excellent.Good quality food massive portions[donot eat for at least five hours b4 visiting] and a general sense of the customer comes FIRST.

John T  (14 September 2001)

Food was fine, but it was more like a dressed up fast food joint - what happened to relaxing over a meal. Why go all the way to Greece when there is a TGI Friday down the road!

Cheryl   (07 September 2001)

One of the best places. We went on the night England played Germany and the atmosphere was great, they even managed to find us a table so we could see the TV! Food was plentiful, only problem was some of the stuff mentioned on the board outside for kids wasn't available at night, only for breakfast!

Rich   (06 September 2001)

If you want filling to bursting point then this is the place, only don,t try to move after as you will find you had more room to eat on the flight in, Verdict - too cramped/too rushed/too much food for one person but good food.

Andy   (31 August 2001)

Excellent restaraunts!!! Ignore all the comments comparing it to Macdonalds!! this restaraunt has the biggest menu on the island!!! loads of dishes to choose from, from various parts of the world!! The meals are served, filling a huge plate, the biggest meals in Kalamaki for the same price too!!!! service is brilliant, and the owner is sound!!!

Martin O  (22 August 2001)

I can't understand the culture snobs who slag off everyone who doesn't eat Greek food for their entire holiday!? I didn't choose a holiday in Greece because of the food, and if I did I would have been disappointed as all the restaurants in Kalamaki, Mikaelos included, cater for tourists not Greeks. Most people like to try different restaurants and food on holidays, but places like Mermaids will always be popular because they give you the kind of food and service that many people want.

Joanne   (22 August 2001)

I thought Mermaids was excellent. Perhaps not the most authentic restaurant in the resort but the food was fantastic! If you are vegetarian and want a good choice of meals got to Mermaids. I have never eaten as well abroad in all my life. I can't believe people compare it to McDonalds, it is nothing like.

Natalie W  (21 August 2001)

The steak was a bit fatty, the mushroom cream sauce tasted too much of flour (white sauce rather than cream) And is certainly not a place to go to when theres a football match on!!!!

Stephanie W  (15 August 2001)

The mermaid was the best resturant in Kalamaki. The waiters were great and dead friendly. We went there so often they new us when we came. They have a great range of food and their greek night was the best. especially the fire table at the end. They had a wonderfull atmosphere, and when i return to zakynthos i will go there again.

Miranda J  (10 August 2001)

I have to say that the only reason Mermaids is popular is because as usual with the English, they have no culture and when they go on holiday like to eat "English-style" food and have a TV to watch!!!! If you came to Zakynthos to eat "English-type" food or Greek food (cooked to please the English) then fine, but if you came to Greece to see the real Greece you should eat "real" Greek food!! There are lots of much more "authentic" Greek "restaurants" than Mermaids - Mikaelos, Parthenon for example. If you like Macdonalds then Mermaids is for you - but if you want to try the food of the country that you are visiting then go somewhere else - it won't kill you, you know - there is more to life than burgers and chips!! All I can say is these people who all think Mermaids is the best restaurant in Kalamaki and indeed the island are obviously quite mad and know nothing about food, restaurants or have any culture!

John S  (06 August 2001)

THE BEST IN TOWN!!

Linda B  (31 July 2001)

The best restaurant in the main street. We tried a few in our two week stay, but for choice, service and cost, this is by far the best.

Derek M  (30 July 2001)

We are about to leave on our third trip to Zante/Kalamaki. Mermaids staff and food is one of the best. OK the food may not be true authentic but overall it is the best place to dine.

Dale D  (18 July 2001)

Tryed it - didn't like it at all - do not try the Lamb stuffed with cheese and rice - this had never seen lamb - and had oxo gravy granules for the sauce - we all love greek food and this was not! Kids meals - very small - atmosphere - totally none greek - english people looking for something like english food - try Michaelo's, 100% Greek, 100% for Atmosphere and service.

Raymond P  (18 July 2001)

Someone made a comment that the competition as far as restaurants are concerned is and I quote"pisspoor". Having been to Kalamki two years on the trot I can honestly say that there are some great eating places in the town, but Mermaids is without doubt the best of the lot. Judge a good restaurant by how busy it is. Mermaids in the evening is always busy, simply beacuse you get the best food, service and entertainment and the breakfasts are great as well. Whatever you do - don't miss the Greek Night.

David L  (12 July 2001)

Only thing Mermaids has in common with McDonald's is popularity. By the way Jonathan, where did you eat? I haven't seen you recommend anywhere.

Jonathan V  (11 July 2001)

If you like loud thumping music from accompanying bars when you eat, being packed in like sardines, an indifferent menu that typified the prevailant substandard quality of food found in many of the tourist food bars, this is the place for you. If Macdonalds means restaurant to you, you'll love this place. Otherwise stay well clear.

Topper B  (10 July 2001)

Lovely little restaurant, off the beaten track. Our first experience was to get a waiter who couldn't speak English, but the head waiter soon put us right.

Micky H  (06 July 2001)

The food, staff, service & prices were all excellent. We have eaten in several restaurants in Kalamaki & Laganas, this is by far the best.

Tony K  (03 July 2001)

great stop off point for more wine or beer if you can beat john macfaddon there

Carl B  (22 June 2001)

What can you say really apart from the both the food and staff are some of the best in the world. See you all in september 02 :o)

Dont come here late at night for something to eat.We had something to eat about 11pm and all the food was just reheated not enjoyable at although breakfast not too bad.

The food, service and price were excellent, we only went there once though as we wanted to sample as many resturants as possible but that one visit impressed us and showed why it is rated the best diner on the island

Paul W  (17 June 2001)

Yes Mermaids was good it had a very extensive menu and staff were friendly and efficient, however if you like to be packed in like sardines and served by brits and aussies then you'll love it , personally I went to Greece to sample Greek food served by Greeks and there were enough traditional tavernas to keep me happy so we only had to visit here a couple of times. However I could recommend their breakfasts!

The staff are so warm & friendly, the foods excellent and you have to expierence Greek Night on a Friday, truely amazing...

Simon A  (05 June 2001)

Take an average UK fast food bistro, stick it outside, add a few token mediterranean dishes and you have Mermaids. Yes its OK, but lets not go overboard in our praises folks, if its good its only because most of the competition is so pisspoor.

Suzanne H  (02 June 2001)

We have just returned from Kalamaki and ate here several times. We were impressed with the service, food, prices and "child-friendliness", in fact, the Mermaid became the standard by which we judged all other restaurants, most of which were found lacking in comparison!!

Simon W  (31 May 2001)

Went July 2000. Spent several enjoyable evenings at Mermaids. Food excellent each time and our dearest night there was the Thursday Greek night. 3 course meal for 2 Adult & 2 Kids plus all drinks came to just under £40. Would recommend to anyone, but book the Greek Night in advance to save disapointment, it is extremely popular and well worth it.

the best place there forget the rest. The food is great, its priced very well(once you look at the others),the service is second to none.We ate in other places first before we found mermaids, then that was it.say hello to adelle for me(she works the till)from her little blue nosed friend.

Mermaids was good but Restaurant Dias, just round the corner on the road to the airport was excellent on both the occasions we went there

Vanessa W  (26 April 2001)

We've been going back for several years now and despite all the other good competition we still prefer to spend most evenings at Mermaids - it's like home from home and Con and Adele, with all their staff make you feel very special and make any occasion you may be celebrating even better. Like most things it the people and personalities which make the main difference. WE LOVE IT

Tracy B  (25 April 2001)

Con, & Adele are the perfect hosts, and the staff are always extremely professional, yet very friendy and fun. The food is consistently excellent, and the kitchen spotless. For the last two years we've celebrated our daughter's birthdays (9th & 10th) in Mermaids. Her cakes were organised by Con, and were huge and delicious. We were even able to organise one by e-mail last year! We can't recommend Mermaids highly enough! Try it! While in Kalamaki, also try the fabulous "Angels" cocktail bar, owned by the same winning team! Steve, Tracy & Tanya (Aberdeen, Scotland)

Geoff Pink and family spent two weeks in Kalamaki. We tried all the restaurants, but found that Mermaids was more to our liking. Nothing was too much trouble for them. They catered very well for children. Entertainment was brilliant, service was fast and every night it was packed. That shows you how good a restaurant it is! We would definately go back. They make fantastic cocktails, serve good breakfasts and evening meals. We could go on and on. Thanks guys for such a wonderful time.

Had to queue in August, but worth the wait. Ask for table outside, not under awning as it is too hot. Food wonderfull, nothing was too much trouble. Waiters very obliging and hardworking. Latest films shown after 10.p.m.

Laura B  (14 April 2001)
