The Mavrikos is O.K. it is clean, has friendly staff and a regular and an efficient maid service. The breakfasts have much more choice than the basic continental but not quite full'English'. But...the main pool is only suitable for VERY good swimmers as it gets deep very quickly at BOTH sides of the pool and is thus 'crammed' at the 'shallow' end. The hotel is minutes from the village but is on a extremely steep and testing hill.Drinks cost slightly more than outside but food costs at least twice as much! I recommend you lunch at the Calypso (Baked potatoes, burgers)and have dinner at Forentinos ( Puigi, Cod fried in beer batter, Stuffed mushrooms or tomatoes and more!) Paid 'acts' are rare and the entertainment is often quizes for which entry is free and the prizes are VERY generous. Unfortunately, the quiz is usually 40 questions on pop music which isn't to everyones taste. The hotel is also party to the Tsilvi exchange rate cartel where you are offered the same exchange rate everywhere and this is less than in the U.K. The electricity switches off when you leave your room which nullifies some mosquitoe detterents. The clientelle is mainly families.
We ate there nearly every night. Once you've been you can't stop going back. Yes, you do have to wait a long time during the heavy 8 - 10 peak but a bottle of Solomon Rose helps and you won't regret the wait. Good food like the Pugi or fried cod in beer batter takes time. Try the stuffed mushrooms or tomatoes to start or the squid.
Had lunch many times. The burgers and baked potatoes are good and filling for 2 to 3 Euro. Never went on a night time because it does not have a taverna ambience. However,it was always busy whenever we passed it.
Passed it many times and saw people looking bored. Had one drink when our regular haunt (the First and the Last) was crammed. Was served a watery cocktail and given a watery shot. Yes,Elvis was there but believe me he does get around Tsilvi!
Dioysis tour guide Sue gives much information not all of which is totally relevant. She doesn't tell you that the boat that takes you to the caves is too big to go in them or that the water is much bluer looking down on the shipwreck and this is free. She find it strange that the monastery is nearly always closed yet a sign clearly states it shuts at one. She takes to a farm for fresh produce at Harrods prices! She does take your side when you complain at the meal stop that you are being served half measures. The tour is fair value for the price but on reflection Smile tours had a better day planned. Sue's not so bad either!
The beach and harbour are nice. There is a regular bus service to Zakynthos town and beyond. Unfortunately a main road runs through the village and this can spoil the 'atmospere' at times.
The beach is very nice and there is a charming small island via a wooden bridge 20 minutes walk to the right from the main road.
Crap beach. Made the best of a days visit by using a pool at an apartment block we were made welcolme at which overlooks the 'beach' such as it isn't.
Good music and competitive drink prices. The sexy tiger cocktail is a must!
