Absolutely fantastic. Beautiful setting, the staff are really friendly and nothing is too much trouble. They love children and are happy to deal with very odd request. The portions are really big and therefore excellent value for money. In fact it puts Mermaids to shame. A brilliant taverna.
Five years ago when we went, I would agree that Mermaids was the best in Kalamaki. However, having just returned (24/07/03) things have definitely changed. The food is okay and the staff are okay. The place is far too commercialised. Get there after 9.00 pm and you have to wait for a table. To be honest it is really over-rated. There are much nicer tavernas/restaurants in Kalamaki such as Escape and Taverna Merlis.
Just returned (24/07/03). What a lovely hotel. The staff are extremely friendly. If you have children (we have one aged 3 1/2) then the staff are even more friendly. They run a 'Time Out' session from 6-8 pm on Sundays when the wife of the owner and her children look after your children. Our daughter, Georgia had her face painted, did some colouring, made an octopus, lots and lots of things, she loved it. The pool was lovely, very clean and tidy. Altough you always get some lazy brits who won't clear up after themselves. There is a caretaker that goes round and puts it all tidy for the next day. The food in the pool bar is fantastic. Great kids meals where they get a drink, a meal and an ice-cream for about 3 euros. The rooms were lovely, we overlooked the pool and the bar, so we could hear the greek night and the quiz, although didn't take part. We met some lovely people and had a fantastic time.
If you want to explore then don't listen to the reps, the tour companies just rip you off. We did a round the island tour for 15 euros and our daughter was free, the tour company wanted 34 euros per adult and 17 for our daughter. We went with Pelergos tours and had a really good time. This time in Kalamaki we were able to get off at Smugglers Cove, very nice.
The food in the resort is fantastic. We loved the Tavernas Escape and Merlis. Mermaids is very over-rated and to be honest quite average. When we went 5 years ago it was really good but has outgrown itself if some way. There is also a brilliant Chinese called Hong Kong food just fantastic.
As you can see we had a brilliant time and would have no hesitations in going back.
Karen, Andy and Georgia Penfold.
PS. Met Tony Kearney, he's been there lots and lots. See his comments below.

The breakfasts could be better, surprised that there was no fresh fruit or greek yogurts. Just rolls (the size of your head), cheese, ham, cake, eggs but not at the same time. You had to guess each morning what you were going to have.
