The hotel was nice and quiet and well laid out. Our room however (a studio) was too small for the three of us with very little wardrobe space. The main areas were kept clean but we suffered from the usual dodgy Greek plumbing, and it was pot luck if you had any hot water. The location was nice surrounded by farms, but it was a twenty minute trek to the edge of the resort and the walk back at night with no pavements and little or no street lights was a bit hairy. Monika and Kostas and the family were very friendly and made us all welcome.
Due to the bad weather (thunderstorms and heavy showers) we only managed to get half way round before turning back. We did make it to the ship wreck and it stayed dry. The beach is horrible and pebbly and the crew won't let you take your shoes because of the oil on the beach (and the closest the boats can get in still leaves you in about four feet of water!). Advise you to take an old pair of flip-flops. The small boats from the north of the island are better for the blue caves as they go right inside and only charge five euros.
We booked through Smile tours in Kalamaki. The ferry crossing was good if a little crowded, and the coach trip wasn't too long. The guide at Olympia, Marios was very passionate and knowledegable about his subject if a little hard to follow at times. Great trip if you are into Greek mythology and the history of the Olympic Games. Watch out for the restaurant they take you to - not the best value. There are plenty of others on the main road, two minutes away. Also beware of the heat - 100 degrees plus!
We only ate there once for lunch (burgers, sandwiches etc.) but the food was excellent, as was the service and like the rest of Kalamaki good value.
We were also persuaded by the young Scottish girl (obviously doing a good job) try this restaurant. Food was excellent with a choice of pastas and sauces and served fresh in a big pan at your table. Price was a little higher than elsewhere but we had no complaints about the size of the portions. One of the best Italian restaurants anywhere. P.S. The complimentary wine is lethal!!!
One of the best resturants in Kalamaki. The Hawaian Chicken was excellent and the choice of food was huge as were the portions. Service was good but not rushed and the location was good away from the main road.
Excellent choice of menu, from Greek to burgers. No complaint about the quality of food or the size of the portions. The service on the night we went was only average but to be fair it was chucking it down and they had to move all the tables in from the edges and the waiters were having problems getting between them. We were'nt impressed by the earthquake either (5.2 on the Richter Scale) but I don't suppose you can blame Mermaids for that!
Lovely traditional Greek restaurant with friendly staff (apart from one who must have been trained by Basil Fawlty). Good choice of food although the Lamb Kleftiko was a little salty. Good value for money.
Nice restaurant with a good choice of menu. Service was slow (we were there for about two hours) but what's the rush when you're on holiday. It was put down to new waiters who couldn't speak English. Recommend you give it a try at least once.
One of our favourites. The Sakanaki was superb, the Chicken Paris gorgeous and the Souvlaki hardly fitted on the plate. Nice ambience (despite the thunderstorm) and the (Greek) waiters were very polite and friendly. One of the cheaper restaurants too.
We had breakfast in the Rose & Crown and weren't too impressed so we were a bit wary about eating at the Parthenon. We needn't have worried. The food was excellent. The sweet and sour chicken was as good as any you would get in Chinatown. The Country Lamb (chef's special) just melted in your mouth and the steak was cooked to perfection. The waiters are completly mad. Very friendly even when just walking past and great with kids (even if one was a ManU supporter). This was the only place we ate more than once. Is that enough recommendation?
This wasn't on our list due to the low rating but after our day in Olympia we wanted somewhere close. All we can say is every one is missing one of the best restaurants in Kalamaki. The Lamb Kleftiko in filo pastry was superb. Service was a little slow considering it was fairly quiet and Louise asked for vanilla and chocolate ice cream with no nuts but was given chocolate parfait. The waitress (manager? Australian/New Zealand girl) was very apologetic however and knocked it off the bill. Watch out for the complimentary Ouzo when you first go in and also the liqueur that comes with the bill - tastes like cough medicine, blows your socks off!!!
Nice location overlooking the beach. Portions were massive. The garlic mushroom starter was big enough for a main course. Main courses were even bigger. We couldn't manage a dessert but when we asked for the bill a huge complimentary plate of water melon appeared. Waiters were very friendly and kept us amused with their antics. P.S. Is the rabbit really that fresh?
Nothing wrong with the food. O.K. for pizzas and burgers but not what you go on holiday abroad for.
Good food, good service and good value. Couldn't fault it.
Had lunch there once. Good service and good food.
Two English breakfasts and a(huge)sausage butty for about seven quid! The best breakfasts in Kalamaki. Couldn't fault it. Good value, friendly welcome. Shame we didn't find it earlier.
Nice location overlooking the beach. Food was ok but Chris's main course was very spicy and there was no warning on the menu, and my mixed souvlaki was burned at one end. The generous ice cream portions certainly put out the fire (once the sparklers had gone out). Good breakfasts. Louise was amused by the ginger cat which appeared by the table awoken, cartoon like, by the smell of cooked bacon.
Hired from "Sunset Car Hire" by the beach near the airport as they were giving the best deal at the time. The car was virtually brand new. The best car to hire on Zante by a long way. Good fun to drive and not too big for venturing up the winding roads into the hills. The only fault was the hood was a bit fiddly to put up when we got caught in a heavy down-pour, but most of the time it was a case of driving with the top down taking in the sun. Definately preferable to the older Samuris and Vitaras or any saloon (even with air-con).
