Is it possible to go to Kefalonia independently? Can you just buy a ferry ticket and make your own way there?
We went to Zante on an allocation on arrival holiday so we had no idea what to expect. There is no reception which I found strange, you have to collect you key from the shop they own in front of the apartments which was closed when we arrived but luckly one of the guests told us our key would be in our door. We were quite pleased with the apartments, they have everything you need and are very clean, there's no pool but thats no problem as there are so many other hotels and apartments around that welcome everyone. The beach is two minutes away and it's a very nice beach too and the centre of Alikanas is in the opposite direction less than 5 minutes away. There's also a restaurant next door which I think was owned by the same people that own the apartments. All in all the apartments were perfectly situated.
I am not much of a beach person and I didn't spend much time there but it seemed a perfectly nice beach to me, quite big and sandy and the water is crystal clear. The water only goes up to your knees for the first 15 meters or so. I imagine this would be good for kids and the parents don't need to worry as much.
We went to Zakynthos between 16th and 23rd of May. 1st day was cloudy and windy but the rest of the week was lovely. Sunny every day, it stayed at around 23 - 24 celcius all day which I think is just perfect, not too hot, not too cold.
I quite liked this trip although one of the passangers fell seriously ill and had to be taken to hospital which meant we didn't get the full tour guide through the museum which houses farm instruments etc from the past and shows you how the Greeks used to live. The guide on the 'train' gave quite a bit of interesting info as we drove along. It cost us 10 euros.
I really enjoyed the boat ride on this trip. The scenery was amazing. the Blue Caves were nice but our boat could only fit(barley) into one of them but it was more scary than interesting as the boat kept smacking off the side of the cave. The shipwreck was good but we had to swim to shore. Take shoes you are happy to get wet, that beautiful white sand isn't sand at all it's millions of tiny white stones which hurt alot. The guide told us not to go on the wreck as it truly is a wreck and is quite dangerous, but I ignored him and hurt myself, i've never had bruises as black before. We only stayed for 30 minutes which was long enough for us, the novelty wears off pretty quickly. we also stopped at St Nicholas bay for lunch which was realy beautiful. We payed 25 euros (i think) with Dionossis tours in Alikinas.
Went on this trip with Dionossis Tours in Alikanas for around 30 euros. I really ejoyed this trip, the tour guide gave lots of interesting info on the island during the bus journey. The stalagmite cave was breathtaking, well worth the extra 5 or so euros, although none of my photos turned out. The lake was really good to. We stopped off at Aghios Efima which is gorgeous, it put a bit of a dampner on our holiday because we wish we had went there now, a bit of real Greece, they don't care too much about tourism because they're a fairly rich island so don't rely on it like Zankynthos. Luckly when we came home Captain Correlies Mandolin was on BBC1 which is set on Kefalonia. We also stopped in Sami (i think), the guide recommended an icecream shop which make their own ice cream, now it is nice and well worth a look but be warned I payed 7 euros for three scoops which I don't think was worth it.
Went horse riding through Dionossis tours for 15 euros for one hour with Yannis horse riding. The farm was fantastic, i would love to live there although their puppy bit me. The horse riding itself was fine although I found it rather boring and slow and my partner wouldn't let us go faster. My horse got a fright on the road and for a split second my heart was in my mouth, but everything was ok.
We took the bus from Alikanas which only cost 2.20 euro return although it's not very reliable and doesn't run very often. We had a walk throught the town which was nice and then some lunch, watch out for the begging gypsies. pull on the heart strings stuff. I would have likes to have gone at night but there was no transport from where we were, much better if you've got a car.
Good place for families. There's a good beach and the choice of restaurants and bars is good but not too loud, I didn't notice any clubs. I personally found it a bit tacky, more like Blackpool than Greece, but that's what most tourists want. If your looking for a bit of the real Greece, from what i saw, Kefalonia would be a better choice.
We booked an allocation on arrival with First Choice. We were allocated Alikanas at the Dragonikas apartments. We did not take the transfers, we got a taxi which cost 20 euro, a bit pricey but we were there in 10 minutes when the brochures says it takes 45 minutes by coach. We did not see our rep the whole time but that's because we were never there at the times she was supposed to be. Luckly we did not need her because the owners of the apartments don't seem to speak any English and i'm not sure how we would have got a hold of her without having to call her ourselves. we tried to arrange somewhere to put our bags before we left as we didn't need to be at the airport for a while but the woman at the front did not speak English and was quite rude and seemed uninterested inwhat we required, we could have done with the rep then.
