Hi June
We stayed at the Golden Sun in 2003 and found it to be very good. The rooms are basic but clean and the breakfast was okay-ish, but that seems to be the way all over. My wife and I are in our thirties and we thought the pool area was excellent as it was very peacefull. It was smart and clean with plenty of sunbeds, tables and umbrella-ay things (this was in early May though so was very quite) It is about a 10 min walk to the main tavernas, makes for a nice stroll back after a nights over indulgence. Yes the planes fly very low over the hotel as mentioned by lots of other people which concerned us prior to going, but rest assured, they are a novelty. At first you think blimey that was low, but by the second day you don't even notice them. They don't fly at night for the turtles so weren't really an issue to us. There is a fantastic beach about 200 yards away. I'm sure you will enjoy your stay here.
Hi Claire Newbury
My wife and I were in Kalamaki in May 2003 and found it to be a really nice resort for a like minded couple like yourself. (we are in our 30's and enjoy child free peacefull places were we can enjoy our own company and not those imposed on you by 'others') We only visited Laganas by the day which was enough for us. Kalamiki is about a 20 min+ walk away. During the day this a pleasant walk along the beach, but by night I don't know the best route. I would say though that Laganas is a big resort and spreads out more so you may find nicer places to frequent on the fringes. Hope this helps you.
I would definitely recommend using this company for car or scooter hire. Julie works at the smaller office on the crystal beach road and she is friendly, informative and you can trust her (Hi Julie, you'll know her as she's the woman with the North East accent) She talked me through all the insurance scenarios regarding the scooters so I was in no doubt of the amount of cover that I had. Unlike other hire companies there is no 'extras'. She is extremely helpfull and has maps and places to visit etc. and is just generally a good person to deal with. (Unlike other hire companies were they quote you a good price but then add on insurance later) Their price was the best, or at the very least as good as, other companies in Kalamaki.
We were staying in Kalamaki but visited Orange on a recommendation. We thought it was excellent, probably the tastiest meal that we had during our stay. I thought that the service was poor though. There were plenty of waiters, but they kept us waiting on completion of each course. It was early season, so not too busy, and I guess that they wanted to make the restaurant look 'busy'. The food was excellent though and the place very smart, modern and clean. If you're staying in Laganas then you have to have a meal here. The Steak Diane was utterly superb.
We stayed at the Cava D'oro this year and were a bit disapointed. The room was fine, much as you'd expect, and clean enough. It depends what you're looking for isn't it. If you like to spend the day by a busy pool with lots of people there then this is for you. We prefer to spend our holiday in more relaxing surroundings so this was not the place for us. Harry's bar by the pool is ok, but if you like nice cocktails at a good price then Achos or Yanis at the front bar will provide. There's a lot of noise at night so don't consider an early night. Unfortunately we had the Geordie couple from hell above us, with the fat b'd shouting at 4 in the morning at one stage to get let in. The people in the Cava D'oro supermarket were very friendly and helpfull so please visit them and say hello. Achos runs a good bar as well so make sure you say hello to him.
I'm sorry but I vsited Mermaid twice this year and was relatively disapointed on each occasion. On the first occasion the food was mediocre and on the second visit even worse. I ordered salmon fillets and got salmon steaks with bones. The service is excellent though and I cannot fault that. I definitely think that Mermaid is over priced, but despite my experiences would still recommend as I've had better meals here in previous visits. There's a lot more restaurants now though in Kalamaki so go here once and then try elsewhere is my advice.
Fantastic. We ate here twice and the food, service and whole experience was great. It has a really nice ambience and the menu is extensive with lots to choose from, so recommend a visit here.
