How reliable are the taxi's from Laganas to Kalamaki if we are wanting to go into Laganas for nightlife but come back to a quieter resort for sleeping? Don't fancy getting stranded if taxis go home at midnight!!!!!!
This place served the best food I had all week in Kalamaki!! Proper Greek food, plus the Greeks ate there so that's a good recommendatuon within itself. The starters were lovely, prawns still in their shell! I had the Lamb Keltfiko and it was lovely, I didn't find another place that made it this good. My boyfriend had the seafood pasta and said it was beautiful. The price was reasonable, far better than an expensive meal at Mermaids the previous night!!!!!! Service was excellent, if you are going to Greece to get a taste of greek food then I recommend here 100%!!!!! Fantastic!!
OK, here goes, hope I don't get shot down by all of you out there!! I ate at Mermaids one night in Kalamaki and to be honest I thought it was extremely over rated. If you want to go all the way to Greece to eat in what I consider the equivalent to a Harvester or Hungry Horse than that is your choice however I am here to give my opinion on this restaurant. I know sometimes kids can be fussy but there were so many beautiful and traditional, clean places to eat in Kalamaki that will be more than happy to adapt greek dishes to cater for kiddies more basic tastes I would say that by eating here every night you are missing out dreadfully!! Now the food, I ordered the fillet steak, and asked for it to be cooked medium, it came out well done, so I sent it back, they cooked me a fresh one, but my boyfriend had to sit and eat his food while I waited for mine. The steak came out again, and it was slightly less well done but still overcooked, by this time I didn’t fancy finishing my meal one my own so I just ate it. It came with one small-undercooked jacket potato and a small salad!! The service was awful, the waiters and waitresses seemed more interested in clearing up getting rid of people than to get us another drink to accompany a dry, late meal!! We also tried here for breakfast, that was lukewarm and greasy, again a disappointment; we found a far better breakfast venue somewhere else! To sum up, a very British, expensive (in comparison to the rest of our meals), and nothing special!! For those of you who want to taste a bit of the place you have CHOSEN to visit the I suggest giving this place a miss and trying the vast choice of other restaurants on this resort!!
The food here was good. Nice surroundings and a reasonable price. Had the lamb kelftiko for the second time, and whilst it didn’t live up to my previous experience I still enjoyed it all the same. We had the meatballs and stuffed sausage to start, they were gorgeous. Service was quick and efficient, they were kind enough to call us a taxi when we wanted to go into Laganas after our meal. The fountain makes a rather kitsch but still pleasant atmosphere – no hustle and bustle!! Prices very good – would visit again.
Lovely setting, great service and good food. We arrived quite late in the evening at this restaurant but this wasn’t a problem for the waiters at all. My boyfriend and I tried the mixed meze for our starters and it was absolutely mouth watering, and plentiful!! I then had the mixed grill Souflaki (spelling not great?) and my boyfriend ate a chicken dish (can’t remember the name) with a delicious sauce. We were full but decided on the previous dishes this would be a good place to try baklava for the first time, and we weren’t disappointed, although we didn’t manage to finish it but not through want of trying!!!!!!! Located near the livelier bars this restaurant makes perfect dining for those wanting to go one for a drink into the evening.
I agree with the comment below. Good but not as good as some of the places on the resort. I tried the lamb chops here and whilst they were nice and hot, they served it with chips!! It is a shame that some of the restaurants feel that to please the 'Brits' they must serve chips with perfectly good meals that don't need them, my lamb dish came with rice and vegetables anyway. The Rose and Crown karaoke does spoil the meal a bit (do people still really enjoy that?) but as far as somewhere to eat goes, its ok.
My boyfriend and I returned yesterday from Kalamaki. We stayed in the Whitehouse Apartments. After reading here I wasn’t sure of what to expect. We booked last minute through teletext and were given a 2 bedroom apartment so my review is based on this!! I was very pleased with the accommodation, location wise it was perfect (although girls, bring more flat shoes as the strip is very long and wobbly!!) it was set back behind the main road and was blissfully quiet. There is no pool but the 2 brothers across the road has one within spitting distance that you can use!! We hired a fan and I think you’ll need it. My only real complaint is the showers, not very powerful and no curtain so the floor gets drenched but that’s a small thing. Kitchen is extremely basic, no tea towels or clothes but these can be bought cheaply at a local shop. Cooking utensils are sparce – but who goes on holiday to use the kitchen for anything more than chilling drinks and snacks?? These apartments are a good base, if you are looking for anything more than a roof, bed, bathroom and fridge then, you’ll need to pay a bit more and go for a slightly more upmarket place – you can’t get champagne on beer prices!!!!!!
Have just returned from Kalamaki. My boyfriend and I ar eboth mid 20's and chose this resort as it had what we believe the best of both worlds. There are a vast choice of restaurants and if you know what to have 2 starters, 2 mains and 4-6 drinks will cost approx 35-40 euros. Taxis into Laganas can be caught at the rank and cost between 6-7 euros (always arrange your price before you get in though as they have don’t have meters!!). It is peaceful and relaxing on this resort. Nightlife is limited but Laganas is close by.
As mentioned below there are a lot of ‘best British breakfast places’, and ‘English pubs’ but these can be avoided if not your cup-of-tea as there are plenty of Greek tavernas around. The Cave Bar is a beautiful setting for an evening drink, try to get up there when the sun is setting.
The beach is lovely and clean and peaceful, very geared towards looking after the turtles, hence the cleanliness!! The seabed goes out for miles at a very level gradient. I would recommend buying a snorkel to swim out deeply and see if you can spot anything!! Sun beds can be hired for about 8 euros for 2 and I would suggest getting one and sand mites liked to feast on flesh!! Also getting there any later than 10-11am means you stand less chance of a sundbed, although the guy who runs them will try his best to get you one but space is limited as it is a the turtles beach. The sun is incredibly hot and there is no other shade than an umbrella so be careful!! We only stayed for a week but I will definitely return one day, for longer as I thought this resort was great we just didn’t have long enough to try all that we wanted.
My boyfriend and I visited this bar twice. First time we had a good drink, dance and the music was good, lots of people around our age (22 and 24) got drunk and thought we'd try it again later in the week, BIG mistake!! I think this place all depends on the people you get in there that particular night. Our second visit was spoiled by the dysfunctional family from hell, raving around to house music off their faces on pills - this included the mother (who was getting’ down with her kids…)!!! We did ask for a better variety in the music and got that for about 20mins. We sat it out for about an hour in which time we saw at least 4 other couples look around as dismayed as we were and leave, we followed pretty sharply. I would say if your passing looking for a late drink then go in suss what’s going on that night, and depending on your preferences stay or go!!
It is very quiet but that is part of the attraction, its a chilled out 'trendy' type of place. We sat and a few drinks, it looks great and the service is friendly. You won't be deafened by loud karaoke or pumping house music.
Beautiful place, the free ride ride up there cools you down with the breeze. Its a chilled out relaxing place, nice way to start your evening, plus you get some great photo's for when you get home. I drowned myself in insect repellent at night and didn't get bitten once the entire holiday, not even here!! Worth a visit if just the once!!
Just a mention, we didn't go at night but called here for the breakfast and lunch, not just fry ups but fresh rolls etc Good price and choice the breakfast was the best I had on Kalamaki - beats Mermaids hands down without a shadow of a doubt!!!
We ventured in once on the holiday, placed right next to Taz's take out it had kiddies in the garden at the front, and is what I'd call more of a family bar/club!! The music was either a band or karoke but just not what I choose to go out and party too ( a bit too rocky for me). Drinks were expensive but found this all over in Zante but that's our choice of drink, JD or Budweiser!!
Well, cheesy music was fine, like to have the old skool 80's and 90's to dance too. The only thing that ruined this place for me was the video playing above the bar showing previous nights at Cherry bay that featured young drunk girls sucking and t***ing off the male strippers, I knew places sunk low for the cheaper holiday market but this was disgusting!!I like to party with the best of them, but please girls keep some dignity.. public heavy petting, muff and boob flashing is not clever or pretty - just cheap!!
Good music, if you like your old and new RnB, chart, hip hop etc then this is the place to go!! You can sit on the terrace if you like and have a few drinks or go back into the dance floor part. As far as my experience of Laganas went, this was my favourite bar!!!
Now now children…..... I am entitled to my opinion and expectations when I dine out, I am not making this up it is what I felt when I ate there. I’m not saying don’t go there if you read what I said, I’m just saying I wouldn’t go there again, and certainly not every night. This entire website is the purpose of relaying your experiences back to other people, this isn't the Mermaids fan club.com!!!!!!!!!!! Firstly my waiter was English, and the gentlemen owner was the person who I spoke to about my meal when I had to return it actually. I chose not to eat in Mermaids again for the EXACT reason that I wanted Greek food, cooked the Greek way, which is why I never returned to Mermaids. I don’t go all the way to another country to eat the English way, which is exactly MY point about mermaids. I didn't have any other problems in the other Greek restaurants (which had a smaller selection, but a fresher and better meal in my experience) my food was always near damn perfect, and I had no translation difficulties there. I stand by MY opinion that I am entitled to, and allowed to voice. So for those of you who cannot beeeeelieeeevve it – get over it, some of us don’t like Mermaids as we feel that it is, as mentioned in other comments, nothing more than a Brits Abroad restaurant for people who go to the same place every night, in the same country every year. Most people will go anyway to try it, some will love it, some will hate it – that’s just the way it is.
After hearing all the complaints about the airport I was dreading this part. My boyfriend who had been before tried to assure me that it wasn't that bad! He was right. Ok it's small, and its not Gatwick but we are in Greece. I had to laugh more than anything when I saw the conveyor belt there on it's own!! We arrived and departed late evening so maybe that was better. The Reps handled the queuing very well in my opinion, 4 flights departing within the hour and we all made it!! Plus in 38 degrees I'm happy to wait outside but if you have a day flight the suggestion below would be good for a hat, shades and suncream. I wouldn't want to get delayed there for more than a few hours though. Would agree, take your food and drink with you as it is a tight fit in there on the way back!! Duty Free shopping is limited. At the end of the day you are only there for a few hours at the most (hopefully, delays allowing) and its a small price to pay to visit a beautiful country, and have a great holiday.
We took an evening shopping trip into Zante Town. My biggest suggestion would be some kind of guide before you go in as we wondered around for a while not really knowing where anything was. Took a long walk up and down the harbour admiring the HUGE luxury boat someone had docked there! They have some good shops and bars. We had a meal in one of the squares resturants, warning you will get collared as your stroll through. It is slightly more expensive than the beach resorts (10 euros for 2 budweisers in one bar) go at sunset as it cools down and is very picturesque. Worth the 3 euros it cost to do the trip, and made a change to the evening.
There is a cash point in Kalamki now. It's on the main road near the Off Licence and Gold shop quite near the Cronulla Hotel and Pool.
