Day trip to Kefalonia

Zante Excursions

Jenna E

Went on the day trip to Kefalonia on 29 June. Would not reccomend doing as we spent the majority of the day on a coach going up and down hills. The caves and lake were nice although extra entrance fees were required which we were not told about. We seemed to travel an hour somewhere to spend 15mins there then we would travel another hour to spend 15mins somewhere else. Was a nice place but a bit pointless as you spend most your day on the coach. Longest we spnt off it was 1 hour for our lunch. If you do go on the trip look around at the prices. We paid 42 euro with Olympic then found that it was 30 euros at all the other tour guide places.

Deanna B

We went there on Friday 1st July 2005 very nice day we went via our Thomas cook rep. The caves and underground lake were nice, all extra cost, which we were not told of untill we were on boat, overall nice day out but glad we were staying on Zante

We went with cavo grosso to Kefalonia this is the 4th trip we did with them and never had any complaints.

The trip is well worth while the monastry was a little crowded inside but there was 2 bus loads inside.
The Drogarati cave spectacular and the boat trip on melisani lake short but worth doing .
The ice cream shop in Argostoli was a bit over rated I thought, ice cream man at macro t&w better but thats only my opinion.

Les K

Hi Claire, hope you get to read this.  Dionisos Tours & TEZ do this excursion.  Because of limitation of time, (governed by the Ferry), also, the island is very Mountainous with a lot of hairpin bends which adds to the journey time between locations.  You would probably do better to Book a weeks holiday on this island.  We missed out on going to Fiskardo & Lixouri.  Places we visited were the Monastery, the Caves(very spectacular) & the underground Lake which was a magical experience.  After lunch we viewed Murta Beach from a Mountain(photo stop), then proceded for some Freetime in Argostoli before returning to the Ferry.  What we did was worth the money we paid.  Thanks to Heidi & Mel at Dionisos Tours, Alykanas.

Jim M

I RENTED A MOTORBIKE AND WENT TO KEFALONIA INDEPENDANTLY. THE FERRY LEAVES FROM SKINARI,ZANTE AT 9.00am. COSTS 4EUROS A PERSON AND 5EUROS FOR MOTORBIKE. I WENT ALL OVER KEFALONIA, VISITED DROGARATI CAVE WITH 4EURO ENTRANCE FEE. ALSO WENT AT MELISANI CAVE WITH 5EURO ENTRY FEE. VISITED MANY CRYSTAL CLEAR BEACHES FOR A SWIM, AND THE LARGE FOTRESS WITH FREE ENTRY IN ARGOSTOLI.THEN WENT BACK TO PESADA, KEFALONIA TO CATCH THE FERRY BACK TO ZANTE AT 6.30PM. OR IF YOU WANT YOU CAN JUST RENT A MOTEL AND STAY FOR THE NITE!! I HOPE THIS INFO HELPS.

Does anyone know of a good tour operator in Argassi that has excursions to Kefalonia? If not is it possible to get a ferry independently? If so where from and how much does it cost? We are leaving on the 17th so any information anyone has would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

Sheena R

Great island to visit, very beautiful. We went with Pelargos tours & booked in the Kalamaki office. Dennis was not the best tour guide and read his commentary from prepared notes. Both cave stops were brilliant & we have some lovely photos. We really enjoyed the ferry which was very comfortable. The coach however was sadly lacking when it came to air conditioning- it seemed to be hardly working on a very hot day.It was a whistle stop tour but definately recommended.Myrtos beach is to die for!

Stephen V

Good trip without a doubt, although I would have removed the church visit to spend more time in Argostoli and the Mellisani caves.

Tina K

Went on this trip with Dionossis Tours in Alikanas for around 30 euros. I really ejoyed this trip, the tour guide gave lots of interesting info on the island during the bus journey. The stalagmite cave was breathtaking, well worth the extra 5 or so euros, although none of my photos turned out. The lake was really good to. We stopped off at Aghios Efima which is gorgeous, it put a bit of a dampner on our holiday because we wish we had went there now, a bit of real Greece, they don't care too much about tourism because they're a fairly rich island so don't rely on it like Zankynthos. Luckly when we came home Captain Correlies Mandolin was on BBC1 which is set on Kefalonia. We also stopped in Sami (i think), the guide recommended an icecream shop which make their own ice cream, now it is nice and well worth a look but be warned I payed 7 euros for three scoops which I don't think was worth it.

Garry C

just a shortish reply to both Tina & Karen with regards to their question on ferries to kefalonia. There is only one crossing a day usually departing approx 8.00am and returning approx 8.00pm in port of skinari. You can either go on foot or take a car which i have done before but you must get permission from your rental operator to take it off the island ,this is usually no problem.the crossing is about 1 hour 30 mins ,you can buy tickets in the port and i'm guessing now because its 2 years since but its about 30 euros return for car and 2 passengers. You are better off in a car if you want to explore and anyway the ferry docks in a place called pessada which is a good few kilometres away from the main town of argostoli and even further away from the other main attractions of this island. The ferry is called the Ionian Pelagos.Hope this helps you,me and my partner & 3 others are in zante {tsilivi}end of july and i will be considering doing this trip again,it would be even better to stay over for 1 night to give more of a chance to see this beautiful island.

Tina K

Is it possible to go to Kefalonia independently? Can you just buy a ferry ticket and make your own way there?

Karen J

Does anyone know if there is a ferry to Kefalonia which carries cars or is it just for foot passengers?

James P

I just come back from a honny moon with my wife. We went on Feb 5 and came back on Feb 14. We went to Kefelonmai for a day trip and it was baking hot on the coach. We didn't have any drinks with us, so we had to buy drinks of water. it was very expencive. We went to the underground lake wich we enjoyed. It was a lovely day.

James P

I really enjoyed Kefalomia. It was a baking hot day. You need to take plenty of food and water. Don't book through your Rep because it is too expensive. It is cheaper to book through the local trips.

Joanne G

We have just returned from our holiday on Zakynthos. We went on the trip to Kefalonia, from Alykanas. It's a long day with pick up at 7.35am and drop off around 8.00pm. The ferry crossing was OK, the weather excellent. The island is absolutely beautiful with breaktaking views The Drogarati Caves are well worth the trek down 172 steps and the Mellisani underwater lake is just stunning. We stopped for lunch in Aghia Efimia which is a lovely place and really peaceful. As stated by other people the tour is a whistle-stop one, but well worth the money. It certainly gives you a taste of what Kefalonia is like - absolutely gorgeous! We booked through our rep, the tour was with Eurozante. The guide Steve (from the blue half of Manchester) was great. Although we paid 36 Euros to the rep, you can get it cheaper through Dionisos at 26 Euros, but I don't know what route they take. Definitely well worth a visit.

Margaret B

I have just returned from Zakynthos yesterday. I made the day trip to Kefalonia during my two week stay. I booked it with Helena of Pelargos tours from the Kalamaki office. Our guide was Costas. He's the best guide you can get for long day trips and also for the Athens weekend. Costas made each and every one of us feel special. Kefalonia is a very beautiful mountainous island. Unspoilt by tourism. The Mellisani Lake was my favourite and I was moved to tears by it's cool beauty. I took many photographs and will share them with you on this excellent website. I was inspired to return to Kefalonia in the near future because of this well organised day trip.

Buellman

Excellent value for money, as long as you don't book through your rep.
We saved 18 Euro's per person by going with one of the operators you find everywhere. (We used Pelargos). The coaches are the same, the visits are the same, and you even get on the same ferry!!

Yes, it is a long day, and yes, it is a bit of a whistle stop tour, but you'd have to have an even longer day, or not see so much of the sights.
But as a quick view of Kefalonia, you simply can't beat it. If you want to see more of Kef, either stay there, or hire a car and drive yourself. (Check the insurance covers you first, some don't)

Karen F

We went on this excursion 23.09.03. The first stop off to Ithaki took 3 hours, if you sit at the top of the boat look out for the flying fish. Ithaki is a very pretty non-tourist island. The next stop was Kefalonia. This too was a really nice island, alot bigger then Zante. We then had a swim stop. We arrived at a lovely deserted bay were we swam in clear waters. Although it is a long day it is worth it.

Samantha P

Well this was a really long day day but worth it. We were picked up at 7am and got back to apartments at 21.30.
Its an hours ferry ride to Kefalonia and i'm sure if it wasn't pouring with rain on the ferry there would have been beautiful views.
When we arrived in Kefalonia the sun came out ans=d we had a lovely day. You go to some breathtaking caves and an under water lake where if you're lucky a little greek man will serenade you on the boat.
We went to a little fishing village for lunch which was beautiful and to the Capital Argostoli in the afternoon. A lovely place to watch the world go by.
Whilst on the coach you also get indepth history of the island - actually very interesting.
Well worth the money for a nice but long day out!

Brian & Clare

LONG DAY, GOOD FOR KEEPING OUT OF THE SUN FOR THE DAY AS YOUR ON THE BUS MOST OF IT. CAVES AND LAKES WERE GOOD, LIKE MOST OTHER COMMENTS DONT EAT IN THE PLACE THE REPS STOPS RIP OFF!! FOOD CRAP.

Sue A

Kefalonia from what I saw is NOT as beautiful as the island of Zakynthos, I sat on the left side of the coach and saw a rock face for most of the trip. A really long day, up at 6.00 in the morning to get the coach for 7.00 and you return 9.00 at night. You are traveling on the coach & ferry for about 7hrs and only get off for 15 mins to look at the chruch, 30 mins to go into the cave and the boat trip on the lake is about 25 mins, a very very boring day, once your on the coach the tour guide then asks you for more money to entre the caves and the lake, so you are charged you 3 euros to walk down 128 steps in 100 degrees heat to get to the cave, then you have to walk back up the bloody things to get back to the coach. Total waste of money.

Gail H

All the excursion operators do exactly the same trips unless they change their prices, the Cavo Grosso was the cheapest we found. This is located at the top of the lane from the Antonis Apartments next to the Angels bar.

Cost – €25

Went on this trip and really enjoyed it. You will visit 2 caves that are wonderful but will have to pay extra the first cave, Drogarati Cave will cost you €3.50 entry fee and Melisani Lake will cost you €5 entry fee. The tickets for each of these were sold to us on the cost just prior to arriving at the caves. As part of the trip I hoped we would see where Captain Corrillis Mandolin was filmed they had all on to mention it never mind take you anywhere near it. But apparently the place where it was filmed was built specially for the filming and then torn down once they had finished.

Keith P

We paid €25 each for this trip and it was outstanding value. The stops were perhaps a little too short, but on our trip this was caused by a totally selfish British couple who decided to take 25 minutes longer than allocated in the capital of Kefalonia for shopping. They did'nt even apologise when they were found by the courier and got back on the coach and were 'blanked' by the passengers upstairs on the coach apparently. This little event ruined our swimming stop. We booked through Dionisis Tours in Argassi (thanks George) and the driver (Spiros) and the courier (Mellisa) were excellent. The coach was air conditioned and very comfortable. We went the opposite way around the island to avoid the other coaches - and it worked - we never met them at the stops. The underground lake is beautiful and well worth a visit. The island is much quieter than Zante. It is a long day. We were picked up at 7.20am and got back to our apartments at 9.30pm, but it was well worth it. If we had booked through Olympic Holidays, it would have cost us €38 rather than €25 for exactly the same tour.

Sarah M

lovely day, payed 25e each, excluding admission to the caves and lakes-beware of this, that 8e each on top. they dont tell you that. but its worth it. take more film with you then you think you will need. and plenty to drink, also dont bother eating where they drop you, its a rip off, walk a bit further on and you can find some lovely places

Marian A

This was a great tour to give you a good taste of Kefalonia, at a price of €23 per adult (€45 with JMC), consider using the tour operators based in your local shops, they're much cheaper. Great trip for adults but perhaps not so for the kids as it's coach based. The stops were good but a little too short, as we were governed by the return ferry time. Our guide was professional, multilingual and friendly. Also consider taking something to eat with you as our lunch stop was at 3pm. This was a long day too, we started at 7.20am and returned at 9pm but definitely good value for money at this price.

Beverley G

This was the best trip we did on holiday! Kefalonia is beautiful and worth seeing. It is a long day but it's worth it (and you can sleep on the ferry on the way back!) The caves and lake are worth seeing, the lake is beautiful. Remember that they may drop you at a resturant for lunch but you are under no obligation at all to eat there, we took a walk into the village instead and it was much nicer. Also, in Argostoli we didn't go to the cafe we were dropped off at but instead walked over the bridge near to the cafe where we saw turtles which was really amazing and unexpected.

We went Dionysis tours who we could recommend, much better than Airtours with the commission that they add on!

Mark H

Most Reps make commission on the trips they sell so they will push their trips at the welcome party. As the company they work for also will want a cut then the price will be higher booking with them. We use the welcome party to find out about a trip and then go down the road and book the trip for usually a lot less.

With regards to the Kefalonia trip, what bugged me was the stop for the Saint, the caves and the lake was only a few minutes and we had to then rush back on board so we stayed ahead of the other coaches and then for the restaurants and Agastolli stops we had about 90 minutes in each (I presume the tour guide/company make commision on the restaurant stops and so encourage you to stay longer there).

Personlly, I would rather have sat on the coach at the docks for ten minutes and let the other coaches get ahead and then spend a bit longer at each of the main places of interest.

Emma F

we were quite annoyed that we booked through our rep ( JMC at a cost of 45 euros each) later to discover we could have gone on another trip, same day, same time, same sites yet for only 29 euros if booked with companies advertising on the streets! next time i would book trips with these companies as its the same trip yet much cheaper! the travel companies rip you off & you are under pressure to book there and then at the welcome meeting, therefore you only have about 20mins to decide before you have to part with quite considerable sums of money!
Kefalonia is a beautiful island, but from the sites we saw we couldnt understand why is regarded as being better than zakynthos ( we prefered zakynthosas kefalonia seemed too quiet!!!)
A really long day, about 7 in the morning until 9 at night. But well worth it because it was nice to see another island. Found kefalonia slightly more expensive than zakynthos, only by a few euros but that would make a considerable difference in price in comparison to zakynthos during a longer visit.
All day on the coach did get quite boring but it was air conditioned so that made it better. If you dont like coach journeys or like to have a bit more freedom this trip isnt for you. Otherwise I'd recommend it but dont book through the reps cos 45 euros each is a bit steep. But for 29 euros ifbooked through other companies this trip is well worth the money.
Don't buy food/drink on the ferry thought ( 2 euros for a small carton of drink when in a supermarket is only about 50 cents.) Also take food for the coach because lunch isnt until about 2 & after an early breakfast your really hungry by 2!

Claire

I enjoyed the day trip to Kefalonia which we booked through our rep. However, it was a long day (we had to meet the coach at Cozy Corner at 6:30am when people were still up from the night before!!) and most of it was spent on the coach (at least it had air conditioning!!). The caves were good to see and the lake was beautiful but I wish we had longer on the boats! It was nice to see a different island and as I was there for a two week holiday it made a pleasant change from lazing on the beach or by the pool!!

Brian H

We booked this and other trips through smile tours. The guides were very friendly and helpful, but the day trip to kefalonia was a long day.The dragorati caves were a sight to behold but the constant on and off the buses started getting a bit weary by the end of the day.

Nick L

As we were only there for 1 week, we did not have time to do the tour but did look into doing it yourself with a car.

First of all check with your hire car company as not all of them let you take the car off the island. The cost of the ferry was 20 euros each way for the car and 4 euros per person. If you are travelling in a group of 3 or more than this is certainly the way to go. Tickets can be bought in Zante town in the travel shop along the front.

If you do go by tour then get it through the travel shops in resort roads - much cheaper than your rep.

I believe the ferry leaves at about 0930 and returns 1730 ish !!!!

I will certainly do this next time i go to Zante.

Josey W

We booked this tour through Spring Tours and I would agree that your much better off hiring a car and doing it all yourself. It's around and hour and a half on the ferry which isn't too bad as the ferry 's very large and fairly comfortable, then comes the gruelling tour of the Island, and by tour I mean you stay in a hot, sweaty, uncomfortable coach for pretty much all day.
We drove through nearly all of the places of interest on the Island, stopping for 30 mins at the caves where you had to run in and out again by the time the tour operator had collected our money to "save" time, then about another 30 mins at the lake both of which we had to pay extra for on top of the price of the tour but we weren't told about before we booked. We then went into Kefalonia town where almost everything was closed for siesta which topped off the day.
What we did see was beautiful and I don't think these tours really do the Island the justice it deserves so do make sure you go if you can and give yourself plenty of time to look around the place.

Bryan G

can any body tell me the price of the trips or the best for value as im going to zante this thursday the 01 may 03

thank you
bryan garner

Phoebe P

We enjoyed seeing Kefalonia and sights such as the caves and the lakes.Very informative tour guide. We were fortunate to see some dolphins which was a lovely surprise. The afternoon tea stop in Kefalonia was at an incredibly expensive place though.Enjoyable day.

Sarah M

After reading some of the comments about Kefalonia, I would like to say that we had a brilliant time in Kefalonia and that our tour guide Melissa was fantastic, she knew a great deal of knowledge about Kefalonia and it was nice and relaxing listenting to her lovely welsh accent(although I thought she was a kiwi). The sites we visited were the caves, lakes and myrtos beach (breath taking). The cost didn't bother us as the guide, driver and the whole day out made it worth every penny. We hope to go again this year so hopefully we might get the same guide again !!!!!!!!!!

Cheryl

can anyone tell me how much it would cost to take a car 2 adults and 2 kid's across to kefallonia for the day and the ferry times. We are going to Zante in August. thank you

Andy N

Didn't book the trip, instead hired a car and took it over on the ferry - worked out cheaper for two people, and then you're in control, you can pick your own lunch stops, arrange things so that you don't arrive at the sights at the same time as the coaches - and you can stop for a drink/photo/ice cream as you want. If you do this, visit the Robola Wine Co-operative, it's all free, and no pressure at all to buy. Why put money into the pockets of greedy tour operators when you can do it better and cheaper yourself. But book the ferry trips the day before, or you may not get on!

Shelley B

Booked this trip with our holiday rep. Very well organised.Very long trip.Take extra travel tablets with you if someone in your party suffers with travel sickness as the tablets will wear off due to length of trip. Paid for the trip in advance only to be told of extra entrance fee costs when were on the coach on the wat there. Locations visited were very good. Drogarati Caves, Underground lake and monastary all well worth seeing. Lunch stop was "pre arranged" and very expensive. Watch out for the "complimentary" bread, they will charge you handsomely for it. Also the ice-cream stop was also part of the "deal". Go into the main square where there is a nice little kiosk with plenty of realistically priced ice-creams. We loved the trip but the hidden extras were a bit crafty. The kids enjoyed it but beware, the trip is a very long day.

Julie O

Did the trip through the Dionosis tours (week 7 July 2002) who were extremely efficient at getting you to places before the crowds of other coaches. Sue was an excellent guide and Kefalonia was a lovely island but I do have to agree with other comments on this site regarding the meal stop/ice-cream stop (very expensive and poor quality). But overall I really enjoyed the day even though it was 14 hours in total (can't say you didn't get your money's worth).

Alvin B

well worth a trip to Kefalonia. The views are breath taking, with plenty of stops. The ferry trip over takes about 1.5 hours. Keep your eyes peeled for the Dolphins and the turtles. Brilliant day out even with two kids.

Michael K

how long is the journey from zante to kef on the ferry and how much is the ferry. Can I stay overnight on Kef.

Philip C

We went with TEZ tours to Kefalonia. The rep Joanne was fantastic, she was very informative about all the locations we went to. We were fortunate to see the remains of the Saint in the monastery and to watch people file past and kiss the saints feet. The droggarati caves and the melisanni lake were worth the extra money, especially if you get the singing boatman at the lake. You do spend a lot of time in the coach, but this is to be expected. It was a shame that most things were shut in Argostoli. Lunch at Murtos bay was expensive and I am sure that an arrangement was made between TEZ and the restaurant. It is definately well worth the trip, yet it may be better to have a car and stay overnight and return the following evening.

Andrew F

This promised to be a really good day and we were really looking forward to it - Kefalonia is obviously lovely BUT my best advice would be to try to hire a car and go over rather than on an organised trip. We went on A First Choice organised job with a tour guide called Vera (it's name and shame time) - God that woman can talk for Greece! She was quite interesting but just sort of went on a bit!!We were rushed round the caves then rushed round the lake, before being whisked very briefly into Sami(Captain Corelli's Mandolin fame) then off to a lovely village overlooking a delightful bay - which we drove straight through and on to a hotel on the outskirts where they obviously had an "arrangement" - "this is where we have lunch" she said - it was ok but it would have been nice to have had the chance to wander and choose for ourselves. Then it was back on the bus where she said she would give us a siesta (presumably meaning she would shutup for half an hour or so) - no such luck 10 minutes later she was off again. We arrived at Agostolli mid siesta so everything was closed - "suggested" we had a coffee and ice cream at another place with an "arrngement" - 2 coffees and 2 ice creams = 17 Euro's! Then it was back to the African Queen for the chug home. A long day and we felt it had been badly organised - my schedule would have been - Off the boat and head to Agostolli (not siesta time) bit of shopping etc, then on to Sami - stop for lunch and a wander, then to the lake and then the caves and then back to the boat - First Choice please note this!! Anyway it was a good day inspite of this - and Kefalonia is well worth a look (but preferably without Vera!!)

Glenys H

We thought the trip was too long for one day. The boat resembled the African Queen the toilets disgusting. Too long on the coach too little time at the sights. Caves and lakes were lovely rep dull and lunch stop ludicrously expensive. There on patron saint day which was a bonus.

Tina

Had a good day...Kefalonia is a big beautiful island.Sites were magical,Drogarati Cave, Mirtos Beach, Melissani lake etc etc. Kids got restless, not very enjoyable for them. Spent heaps oftime in the bus though!!

Jo

we booked our trip through al la carte although it wasn't them who took us over to the island. the rep that took us would bore the pants off of anyone(thats if you weren't already asleep by that time) if you want to take a guide book and map with you its probably a good idea cause as we were being driven round the island she and the driver spent all their time chatting to one another. the first stop was the monestry all of 10 minutes spent here we then went to the caves and lakes "be back asap " our rep said. then off to lunch.... and an hour later we were taken to the town centre for a very expensive cup of tea while our rep met up with her mates for a chat. then it was back to the ferry for 530pm and we got back to our hotel at 845pm. im going to name and shame this rep cause she is crap- helen- short blonde hair and a big nose. yes you ruined my day and everyone elses on that trip. kef probably would have been more enjoyable without you. however dont let this put you off going from what we did see it was quite nice. shame we couldnt have seen a bit more of it.

George

We used the local operators to book the trip, the tour operator wanted 18000dr we paid 8000dr, the only problem with any trip like this is the time spent on the bus. Also at the end of the trip we paid rip off prices for two pieces of cake, may be the guide gets a back hander for taking us there? The trip is worth going on.

Rod

Kefalonia - lovley views Coach ride - long and boring Value for money - Terrible Tour Guide - out to rip you off. i.e will take you to expensive places to eat. Kefalonia town - It will be closed by the time you arrive Boat Trip - Slow and Boring 1.5 Hours Caves/Lake - Okay but again the tou guide will rip you off.

Dave N

Me and my girlfriend booked with Dionssis tours, it cost us 8000 drs each with an extra 2500 each for the caves and underground lake, which were ok but if you have ever been pot holing, its nothing special. The trip itself was ok but it was a very long day starting at 07.00 and finishing at 21.00 what the tour reps dont tell you is that you go all round the other resorts on the island to pick up the other tourists so the first 2 hours were spent picking everyone else up not too bad in the morning but terrible on the way home especially if your last to be dropped off. btw Laganas was the first pick up point with Alykes the last and vice versa on the return. When we got to the ferry port and were given our tickets we found that it only cost 1300 drs each for the ferry crossing eachway, i dont know how much it would cost to take a bike or car across but it cannot be much more so there is def some money to be saved as well as time by arranging the trip yourself, which is what we wished we had done. dont let the above put you off because Kefalomia is a really nice place to visit but if sitting on a coach for most of the trip is not your idea then def sort this one out yourself. BTW, watch out for the restaurants, not saying that they produce 'special, over priced menus', but the thought did cross my mind......especially as I paid 2500 for a very poor breakfast.

Liz

Great value for the money! It was indeed a long day (more time spent on the bus than actually visiting the sites), but it was well worth it. The lake, the caves, the monastery, and photo stop of the spectacular Myrtos Beach were incredible. Bring extra money, though, as they collect entrance fee for cave and lake on the bus. Highly recommended!

Greg P

alot of time was spent on the coach, but that's only to be expected i suppose with an island tour!We booked through Dyonisos tours- much much cheaper than through your Rep. Our guide-Sue was really good too! The under ground lake and caves are worth seeing, you have to pay extra, but it's not much. it was a good day out.

Tracey O

We booked our day trip to Kefalonia via one of the street vendors. They are not pushy, and will give you as much information as you require. We had an excellent day, the trip was well run, our guide was superb. The monastery of St. Gerassimos for us was the highlight of our holiday, we were fortunate enough to be in the monastery whilst a service was being held. The crypt was opened and the congregation were given the opportunity to fle past and kiss the feet of St, Gerassimos, yes the remains of the Saint are in the crypt, which when the front is opened are on full view. We were indeed privilaged to observe this service, it was the day after the USA disaster and all on the trip took the opportunity to light candles for all those affected.

Roy F

Kefalonia is a wonderfully peaceful place to visit. Very picturesque. I would definitley recommend an excursion to this lovely island. The island's capital, Argostoli, is well worth visiting too.

Jessie D

we booked with Dionysis tours, rep Sue made the trip very enjoyable! Great day out though very tyring!! Also, great value for money! We had to pay extra for the lake and caves but it was well worth it!

Marcus S

Sorry Rachel, that should have been TEZ tour company, not ZET!! Also as mentioned below you do have to pay 2500 dracmas more for the cave and lake, but worth it!!

Marcus S

Hi Rachel, my girlfriend and I got back from Kalamaki on Monday. You can book the trip to Kefalonia with the tour operator but we booked with ZET (Zante Tourist Board) via Smile Tours on the high street in Kalamaki. This way it cost us at least half the price (£16 each - 8000 Drachmas) and our coach followed the JMC & Thomson ones anyway! It goes 07:00 to 20:00 daily, and you do all the pick ups then head to the North of Zante for the ferry. Day involves trips to St.Gerasimos Church, Drogarati Cave (staligmites and stuff), Melissani Lake - Cave (small boat trip), Karavomillos, Mirtos (panaramic view of island)and a quick look at the site of Captain Corellis. Best day of the hols for us! If you want more info, or to see a couple of snaps email me at marcusstott@yahoo.com....have a nice time!!

Can you tell me what the name of this excursion is, who I book it through and how much I should expect to pay (I'll be there in September)? What are the names of the caves and the lake? And does the excursion include a trip to Keffalonia or was that comment just in the wrong section of this website? Any help would be appreciated as I really like the sound of these beautiful sights! It was a long day but very enjoyable. We booked through Dionysis Tours in Alykanas. The Tour Guide Sue was very knowledgeable.

This trip was ok and good value for money. Unfortunately when we went about 2 weeks ago it was a horrible rainy day. There was also a strike on the island so nothing was open, no shops, bars or restaurants. We were able to see the caves and monastrey though. I am sure we would have enjoyed it more had it not been for these two factors.

We booked through Cava Grottos (or something like that. It was a superb day and excellent value for money (7500 dracs). Stalactites, stalagmites, caves, dead saints, its all included. Probably not best suited for youngsters as its a long busy day with not much that would seem to appeal to kids. Don't book through your travel rep, it'll be twice the cost.

We booked with Mamfredas Tours in Alykes - very helpful and not too pushy - and the tour was with TEZ. An excellent tour and guide and it was only 8000 drachmas in June which is pretty good for a day trip including ferry. Only extras 2300 dr for cave entrances, but we were told that in advance.

We thought Zante was nice until we went to Kephalonia. Don't book through the reps- Tsilivi Travel did us a good deal with a local tour company. Skip the enforced lunch stop, take a picnic, and head for the nearest beach!

ALTHOUGH WE DIDNT GO ON ORGANISED TRIP WE MADE THE MISTAKE OF GOING OVER TO SEE FRIENDS ONM KEPHALONIA. NICE RIDE OVER ON THE FERRY FROM ST NIKS - 1300 DRX ONE WAY BUT THAT BECAME THE PROBLEM, IT ONLY WENT ONE WAY - DUE TO DETERIORATING WEATHER IT WAS CANCELLED ON THE WAY BACK SO IT THEN COST ME AN XTRA 20000 DRX FOR A ROOM ETC. NOT A PLEASANT FEELING - ALSO HAD TO EXTEND THE CARE HIRE AT EXORBITANT RATES - MORE ON TAX AND INSURANCE THAN TO HIRE THE BLOODY VEHICLE. I WAS MOST PISSED OFF SO THE MORAL IS DONT GO WITHOUT A TOOTHBRUSH ON THE LAST DAY OF YOUR CAR HIRE WITHOUT LOADS OF CASH

One of the best trips we went on. Caves and the Underground Lake are breathtaking, but be warned if you have ashma or a walking problem as the steps down to the caves could cause a problem. Read more at: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/chris.gawley/zante.htm

WELL WORTH THE TRIP TO SEE THIS BEAUTIFUL ISLAND. GREAT SEEING THE CAVES, UNDERGROUND LAKE, SMALL CHURCHES AND FABULOUS MYRTLE BEACH. TAKE PLENTY OF SNACKS AS THE TOUR OPERATORS CHOOSE RESTAURANTS AND THE ARE NOT ALWAYS THE BEST!
